APRIL 2012
Member of: GFWC, GFWC Virginia and Lee District
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Welcome to Spring’s flowers and birds. Plans
and preparations are in full bloom for the
Spring Garden Fest on April 28th. Please let
Patsy and or Dottie know what you are bringing and doing for the sale. I have agreed to be
in charge of plant sales so please let me know
what you want to sell. I have about 20 garden
plants to sell (Hellobores and Hardy Begonias)
and about 25 house plants to sell. I need to
know what you are bringing so I can prepare
growing instructions.
Our President’s Project for this month will be
pots of flowers for the entrance of the Library.
Dianne and I will plant 2 large cobalt blue pots
and take them to the Library by May1st. The
pots were bought last year in Nags Head at
a big discount. I planted them last year and
tended them for the library. I will be in charge of
watering and fertilizer this year.
Our Spring Social will be May 2nd at Tanglewood Ordinary. Thanks to Terry and Anne for
planning this fun get together.
Our April Lunch Bunch will be Monday
April30th at Kanpai Steak House on Broad.
Our May Book Club will be Monday May7th at I
Cater in Lakeside. We meet at 11:30 and Patsy
will lead a discussion on her book, The Last
Girls by Lee Smith.
Patsy took lots of cans to recycle last week.
Please continue to collect any cans, (soda, pet

food, soup, vegetables) and bring them to the
meeting on Monday, April 23rd.
Kit Davison co-president
This co-president will be attending the GFWC
VA convention April 20 – 22 and I will report at
the May meeting. My main delegate duty will
be voting on by-law revisions.
We will have a pot luck dinner this month so
bring a dish to share. We will meet at 7:00
as usual but will eat first and then have our
meeting. The social committee will provide the
drinks and the paper products. It will be a fun
evening!
It is hard to believe that our club year is almost
over – one more meeting and then “summer
break”. The thought for the day is: Your mind is
like a parachute…..it functions only when open.

ART
The Art Committee and it’s helpers are counting down the days until the April 28th Spring
Garden Fest and we hope you are too. We
have been very busy cutting and pasting,
painting, potting, sewing....in short... creating a wide variety of lovely items to sell at the
upcoming event. Many of our members have
be so generous to donate money to help offset
some of our expenses. These donations will
also fatten the piggy bank towards our ultimate project of decorating a child’s bedroom
at the next Goochland Habitat for Humanities
Home. Thanks also to those members who
have volunteered to work the day of the event
with the set up and take down or to work the
booth selling our wares. And, it is never too
late to volunteer to help. We have a very
short window (7 to 8 am) to set up the tent and
tables and to get all of the items displayed. If
we have any early risers who are looking for a
“fun time”, just give Patsy Garber a call, Cell
357-5999. We need muscle, husbands are
definitely included in this invitation...

EDUCATION
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot
do everything, but I can do something. And
I will not let what I cannot do interfere with
what I can do.” ~ Edward Everett Hale ~
The GFWC Education Community Service Program works to improve literacy and education awareness in communities and around
the world. We have the obligation to improve
our own reading habits as well as to work with
those in our community. The GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club began awarding education
scholarships to deserving high school students
in 1979. Over the past 33 years the club has
given $26,550 to 37 deserving young ladies
and gentlemen of Goochland High School.
Students are now completing the application
process for the Mabel L. Behrens
Memorial Scholarship. These applications
will be reviewed in the next three weeks. All
scholarships require a written essay. Scholarship committees do this for a variety of rea-
sons. One of the main ones is to get an idea of
what the person who’s applying for the scholarship is like. Yes, GPA, community service, volunteerism and leadership are important qualities, but by the time you’ve gotten to where
you’re being considered, everyone you’re
competing against will also have strong records
in all these areas. Our application requires the
student to write four short essays; which extracurricular activity meant the most to you and
why; which of your community service activities
meant the most and why; what are your education goals; and why receiving this scholarship
is important to you. The scholarship committee
will read these essays to see what sets the student apart from the crowd, looking for a reason
to select them over all the others. The scholarship will be presented at the senior awards
program the end of May. A special thank you
to each club member as your participation in
the Fashion Show is what raises the funds for
the scholarship.
If you know of a senior that is deserving
of this scholarship and has not applied, remind
them the application is due April 23rd.

The Book Club meets May 7, 2012 at
11:30am at I Cater Café (6935 Lakeside Avenue). We will be discussing the book Last Girl
by Lee Smith. Join us for lunch even if you
have not read the book.
Through education, leadership, kindness and service, we are encouraged to
have a greater influence on the community. We learn from our experiences and use this
knowledge to benefit the welfare of others.

HOME LIFE
GFWC, together with our GFWC Signature
Project: Domestic Violence Awareness and
Prevention Program Partner Prevent Child
Abuse America, seeks to change the way our
nation thinks about prevention. Our very own
Goochland Women’s Club is supporting the
healthy child development and child abuse
prevention by participating in the Pinwheels for
Prevention campaign. Using the pinwheel as a
symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention
nationwide, the campaign focuses on community activities and public policies that prioritize
healthy child development and child abuse
prevention. On Sunday, April 22, at 2:00 women of the club and members children will be
creating a Pinwheel Garden at the Goochland
Family Service building to show our support in
this worthwhile project. The garden will display
a sign showing our interest, and be visible to
the public for approximately 2 weeks. We have
over 70 pinwheels, so our garden will hopefully
generate public awareness. This is not a profitable display. If you have any questions, please
give me a call.

Invest in a Healthier World.
Immunize a Child.
Every 20 seconds a child dies of a disease that
could have been prevented by a vaccine. Vaccines work to level the playing field so that all
children, no matter their circumstances, have a
shot at a healthy life. GFWC is proud to partner with Shot@Life to educate, connect, and
empower Americans to champion vaccines as
the most cost-effective way to save the lives of
children in developing countries. Shot@Life
helps immunize children against four illnesses
that can be prevented by life-saving vaccines:
measles, pneumonia, diarrhea, and polio.
It only costs $20 to protect a child for life. What
have you purchased recently for $20? Maybe
it was a manicure, or a week’s worth of coffee.
Perhaps you paid for lunch with a friend. Take
a picture of something that you recently spent
$20 on and share it with GFWC by sending an
email to [email protected]. We will share these
photos on our Facebook page and with Shot@
Life. Consider making a donation in honor
of Mother’s Day and World Immunization
Week. Together, we can help give children
around the world a Shot@Life and moms a
reason to celebrate Mother’s Day.

MINUTES
General Meeting Minutes
March 26, 2012
Co-President Dianne Kronmeister called the
meeting to order at 7:05 pm.
Sarah West introduced our program by Aleise
M. Matheson, Owner of Heart of Ireland School
of Dance. After demonstrating some different
types of Irish dancing, of which the well known
Riverdance is only one, Aleise demonstrated
some solo steps and the different shoes worn
for different dances. She then tried to progress
to group figure dancing, but only Amy, Dana,
and Patsy were capable of following her instructions. We all enjoyed watching them skip
ball change to the music.
Pat Jeffress gave us a devotion based on the
life of St. Patrick, who ministered to Ireland for
29 years in spite of having been kidnapped
at 16 and held in Ireland for six years until he
could escape back to London. St. Patrick was
the author of several Irish Blessings that are
still used today. Dianne led us in the Pledge of
Allegiance, and welcomed Christian Carter as
a guest for the second time.
Following a 20 minute break for refreshments,
Dianne called the meeting back to order, and
the minutes of February’s meeting were approved as in the Nugget.
Treasurer Jeanne Napier reported a balance
as of 2/29/2012 of $5,669.14, after disbursing $1,525 of philanthropic funds in February,
including two scholarships to Virginia Tech.
Our sweetly emotional Co-Corresponding
Secretary, Mary Ann Valentour, passed around
a letter from Pat Jeffress thanking the club for
our support at her installation as Lee District
President, which was attended by 16 club
members.
First VP Tricia Miller announced the four
awards won by our club at the District meeting:
Third place for Newsletters, The Golden Nugget; Best single project for Membership, our fall
membership social at Tanglewood organized
by Terry Smith-Cole; Best single project for
Home Life, Mabel’s Legacy by Pattie Pryor;
and Best overall website design, by Pat Jeffress.
In her President’s Report, Dianne encouraged
attendance at the State Convention at the
Westin in Short Pump. Dianne will be going
and spending Saturday night there.
In her President’s Report, Kit pointed out that
Pat Jeffress was primarily responsible for two
of the club’s four awards. She told us Book
Group will meet 4/2 at Portico (RSVP to Ellen)
and Lunch Bunch will be 4/30 at the Kanpai
Japanese Steak House at Short Pump (RSVP
to Terry).
Education Chairman Billie Reid encouraged
us to read her inspiring column in The Nugget,
encouraging us to continue to share our time
and talents with others.
Art Chairman Dottie Howell reported that Shirley Grow, Pam Johnson, & Dianne Kronmeister
won blue ribbons at the District Art Show and
will be entered in the State Show. She showed
us the pots painted by our many talented club
members at a workshop at her house. Patsy
Garber, chair of the club’s booth at the Master
Gardener’s Gardenfest 4/28 at J. Sargeant
Reynolds,
encouraged everyone to participate and sent
around sign-up sheets.
Home Life co-chairman Ellen Robinson determined that the best Sunday for the April planting of the PCAV Pinwheel Garden will be 4/22
at 2 pm. Members are encouraged to attend.
Internationa Affairs chairman Pat Jeffress
encouraged us to read The Nugget article describing the origins of Easter customs around
the world.
Public Issues Chairman Sarah West conducted
the 50/50 raffle, with $28 for the USO after
Joan Peterson generously donated her winnings.
Dianne announced that the Social committee
has planned a Spring Social at Tanglewood for
Wednesday, May 2, for $20 per person.
There being no New Business, Dianne thanked
our hostesses, Pat Jeffress, Amy Hartley, Patsy
Garber and herself, and the meeting adjourned
at 8:45.
