Prez Snippet
Remember
2008 when the
entire American
economy almost
came to a
crashing halt.
None of us really
knew how close we were to collapse. It
was good that the Fed Chief Ben Bernanke
had studied the cause and effects of
the Depression of the 30’s. Without his
guidance and the Federal government
injecting funds into the construction
industry as well as other industries like
the auto business, the world would be a
different place. I acquired a chart produced
by the Portland Cement Association, that
(probably not surprisingly) parallels the
drop and climb trends of both construction
and manufacturing. Although the latter is
still struggling to recover to pre-recession
“glory”, it appears that the growth of
our chosen industry will continue for the
foreseeable future.
Chapter (54), as well as other Chapters in
the country, have has also had its highs
and lows. But, in spite (or maybe because?)
of the struggle to bid and book work locally,
our segment of ASPE has been progressing
well these past 10 years. We have
provided the construction community really
outstanding programs and educational
services for its members and visitors. The
food is great, the drinks flow, and the
conversation is lively. Many of us have
been friends for years. Some of our past
Have something to share with the
group? New project, job opportunities,
Officers and Chairs
“icon members”, like Jon Grasle, Brad
Johnson and, Walt Lemon were our friends
and, mentors, sometimes our bidding
adversaries, often entertaining, and always
highly respected by us all. Equal kudos
go to our recent past and ongoing “better
angels” of innovation and resourcefulness,
like Wally Brassfield, Jared Carkin, Chana
Frederick. Mike Flynn, Cur Kolar, Robert
Rivera, and Hester Troutman who have
equally helped make this chapter a role
model for the entire society.
With this thought I need to ask the
members to rally around the Chapter 54. It
seems the Chapter needs to change, which
will bring growth in the years to come. The
biggest change is we need more help in
the administration of the Chapter. A few
hours a month is really all that is required
to execute duties that the organization
needs done. I hope we can count on each
of you to (to use a word we are all familiar
with) estimate what you are willing to do –
how you can contribute – and then “step
up” to discuss, define and be part of our
future in ASPE.
With all that said, and with Walt’s passing
this year (more on this in a separate
message), all of us should pause and think
of how very wonderful our families, friends,
and our work is.

NW Regional Governor’s Message
We have made it through another [fiscal] year with our
day jobs and being a truly valued member of ASPE. I
can only hope that each of you have taken advantage
of your membership in a meaningful way. There are
numerous opportunities!
As we move into the summer break, it is an important
and busy time in ASPE. Chapters have new and
returning board members, there are new members
joining, and present members pondering renewal. For
those thinking about renewal, I can only say…”the table
is set” for you to get value from your membership…you
just need to grab on to it, whether it is something you
want to do for your chapter , or just resolve to attend
the meetings and participate in discussion.
ASPE is the architectural/engineering/construction
industry’s most diverse professional organization, so it
is especially incumbent upon the individual member to
look for and receive value from belonging.
One of those opportunities is attending our annual
meeting in July in Tampa. Every member has received
information on the location and dates. This is a great
opportunity to receive high quality seminars, and
network with like professionals from all over the US.
Of course the BIG thing happening in ASPE is the
revamping of the bylaws. Why are we doing this? ASPE
needs to get in sync with the changing times to better
build a more responsive organization to attract the
Millennials coming into our profession. Like it or not,
we need to eventually replace ourselves, and I would
hope we all want that individual to realize there are
opportunities beyond the day job that offer professional
enrichment. ASPE is responding to this need.
Have a nice summer and spend some time thinking
about increasing your commitment to your chapter.
Cheers,
Tom Cole

Playing with Numbers
This is a term a lot of us can identify with –
depending on the goal of your estimate at the
time. Sometime between your daily take-offs and
biding, “give this baby a spin”:
From the posts: https://www.yahoo.com/news/
lot-people-having-trouble-math-161950574.html
and A lot of people are having trouble with this
math problem that requires some basic algebra
appeared first on HelloGiggles.
Credited to Bethany Biron, Hello Giggles Sat, Jun 25
** Spoiler alert, try to solve it yourself before
reading further!! **
The trick is to remember PEMDAS, the order of
operations formula, which stands for parentheses,
exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.
As Talwalkar explains, this means first tackling 3 ÷ 1/3.
Three divided by 1/3 is nine, and then carrying along
with the equation from left to right you end up with the
correct answer of — drum role, please: 1!
Unfortunately, it’s been a while for many of us (or it
hasn’t but we just didn’t pay that much attention in
algebra) and most people who get it wrong actually
fall down on entering the fraction into a calculator.
Other people who get it wrong forget about PEMDAS,
and simply do the equation from left to right. Common
incorrect answers end up being 3, 7, or 9.
Nothing like a viral mind boggling math problem to
make you feel like you should have paid better attention
in high school algebra.
The equation in question? 9 – 3 ÷ 1/3 + 1 = ? The
deceptively simply math problem recently blew up in
Japan, as people quickly found they were routinely
getting the wrong answer. According to PopSugar, only
60 percent of 20-somethings solve it correctly, a study
showed.
Of course, it’s just a silly math problem — or is it?
According to the video, the 60% rate of correct answers
is down from 90% in the 1980s. What could this
big drop in accuracy suggest? Is it possible that our
dependence on easy internet research and calculators
means we’re committing fewer algebra principles, like
PEMDAS, to memory? It’s a fascinating question, and
we’re going to go look up the quadratic equation real
quick, just in case.
So what is the remaining 40 percent doing right?
YouTube user MindYourDecisions shows you, bringing
in mathematician Presh Talwalkar, the man behind the
problem, to explain how it’s done.
