The Children house
We have had a fun packed, incredible fortnight in the children’s house.
The children and a few parents have loved watching the life cycle of the chickens and helping to look after
them. The excitement in the room when the eggs arrived was incredible and then when we arrived in the centre
to find 3 baby chicks, the children were very excited and couldn’t wait to get a closer look. The children took it
in turns to hold the chicks and we even ended up having names for a few of them. We talked about the life cycle
of a chicken and the children have an incredible knowledge of it, but there is always the question “What came
first, the chicken or the egg?”
Each morning the children are given the opportunity to practise writing their names, we have seen a huge
improvement in the children’s pincer grip. The children are all able to recognise their own name and sometimes
even their peer’s names. We will be continuing this activity throughout the year to improve the children’s
knowledge of their name and the correct pencil grip in preparation for school. The children have also been
practising their number recognition, we have been working with the children very closely to help gain this
important skill. So far, we have seen an incredible improvement.
Lucy and Milana have been our Star of the week for the past fortnight, Lucy brought in a wonderful poster with
a few family photos and photos of her favourite food to eat, which was chocolate. Lucy also brought in some
chocolate treats to share with her friends. Milana brought in a creative poster as well and her two favourite
toys, Minnie and Mickey. The girls did an amazing job presenting their creations to the class and telling us a
little about themselves and their families. This is a great activity which seems to be enjoyed by all the children
and is a great way to get the children practising to talk to a group and to give them a sense of belonging.
We can’t wait to see what the next fortnight brings.

The Garden Room
It was an extraordinary experience witnessing the life cycle of the chicken for all of us. From the
very arrival of the eggs, to that initial hatching, with faint “cheep cheeps” that echoed magically
from within the eggs to the wet little chicks that eventually evolved into miraculous fluffy balls of
awesomeness. Each step was relentlessly observed and the Garden Roomer’s quietly enraptured
faces followed their every move. This experience will leave indelible memories that will last a
lifetime. On Harmony Day the children enjoyed messy play with brightly tinted foam, tiny hands
were painted orange and their handprints will be made to represent peace doves. We explored
playing different musical instruments from the Indian, South American, Aboriginal and European
cultures. The children listened to Russian Music and learnt about the Russian national dress. A
lovely way to experience our world’s beautiful diversity with respect! To commemorate St Patrick’s
Day, the Magic Leprechaun nuggets were used in a Science experiment. The children observed the
rock-solid nuggets dissolve and react to the vinegar. To their amazement, the green nuggets
become “alive” as they bubbled and fizzed into a mesmerising green frothiness. The children had
fun with this fortnight’s fundamental exercises. They enjoyed throwing balls into baskets and
playing marbles. And, with the garden being a veritable treasure trove for lady birds and other
winged
F insects – it came as no surprise when one afternoon a visiting buzzing bee made for a
spontaneous observation activity! The children were in awe with this tiny insect that produced
honey. Excited to usher in the next two weeks!
