25 – 31 20142016 8 –August 14 August www.rsis.edu.sg Country Weekly Report of International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research Iraq On 10 August, a Tribal official reported that the Islamic State (IS) group burned 20 young men detained in Hawaji, a city in Kirkuk province that lies in the northern part of the country for refusing to join the group.1 On 10 August, Commander of Anbar Operations Major General Ismail Mahlawi reported that Iraqi forces had killed six members of the Islamic State (IS) group in a gun fight. The battle took place near the city of Ramadi which lies to the west of Baghdad when the army was making routine checks.2 On 11 August, a security official reported that a suicide bomb killed two policemen in the Muthana province, a region that lies near the Saudi border. The incident killed at least 13 people, including five children and two women. Medical devices, operating theatre, paediatric and intensive care units were also destroyed.5 Yemen On 8 August, Saba, Houthi-run news agency said Saudi-led coalition forces airstrikes hit Odhar village in the Nehm area of Sanaa killing 12 people and wounding 17 others. The area has been the centre of the fighting between supporters of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's government and Iran-allied Houthi forces.6 On 9 August, local residents said Saudi-led coalition forces airstrikes hit Al-Aqel potato chip factory in Nahda district, in Sanaa, killing at least 13 people, most of whom are women. 13 people were also reportedly wounded in the incident.7 On 12 August, local residents said Saudi-led coalition forces conducted airstrikes targeting a presidential compound and military base in Sanaa. Six farmers on a road west of the capital were wounded in the incident.8 On 13 August, an aid group, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), said at least 10 children were killed and 21 were wounded in an airstrike in Haydan, in Saada province, believed to be from the Saudi-led coalition forces.
