Bear Hill Swim Team and Lessons 2016 June 27 – August 19 Head Swim Coach | Steve Quigley Diving Coach | Lois Margeson Assistant Swim Coaches | Gianna Tringale and Madison Guay Sign-ups Swim Team, Swim Lessons, Tennis & Golf Thursday May 19, 2016 6 to 8 PM Hello. My name is Steve Quigley, and I come to you as your new Head Swim Coach and Swim Lesson Director. I have a long history in the sport of swimming, stemming from competitor, to spectator, to referee, to instructor, to coach; many of these years as a member of the NSSL by way of the Corinthian Yacht Club and as an employee of the Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA. As a young teen, I was voted “New England Swimmer of the Year” for two years in a row, and I qualified for, but never participated in, the 1968 regional Olympic swimming trials in upper New York. Upon entering Dartmouth College, I became Captain, and I majored in French and International Relations. I was in the commercial textbook publishing industry for 40-plus years, after having retired at an early age in 2014. I have a passion for working with children, having fathered three of my own. I was just this month voted the 2016 Massachusetts Substitute Teacher of the Year. I work in Stoneham as a substitute among other locations. SWIM TEAM. The primary goal of the Bear Hill Swim Team is to offer a fun and competitive summer swim program to youth aged 4-16. The coaches’ key objectives are to aid swimmers in mastering strokes, setting and achieving goals, practicing good sportsmanship, and developing confidence and mentorship through swimming. All coaches are lifeguard, first aid, and CPR/AED certified. Swim Team and swim lessons will run from June 27 to August 19. I am excited to welcome back our diving coach, Lois Margeson. Our new assistant coaches this year are no strangers to the Bear Hill family. Both have been members and guards for many years. I am happy to announce that Gianna Tringale and Madison Guay have agreed to take on this very important role. Gianna attends St. Anselm College and just completed her freshman year while Madison just finished high school and will be attending Trinity College (CT) in the fall. Swim team practices are offered every weekday morning during the season. See the swim team practice schedule for further information. Diving practice is offered M-T-TH-F from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Bear Hill competes in the North Shore Swim League against three other North Shore clubs. Meets are held on Wednesdays (informal “B” team) and Saturdays (formal “A” team). The 2016 meet schedule will be posted poolside and on the BHGC web site once it is set. We *may* have a few pre-season workouts on the weekends. Watch for updates on the web site. The Wednesday meets are open to all swimmers. These are fun events, and we encourage all swimmers to sign up. Signup sheets will be posted on the pool shed until 12 Noon on the Tuesday before the meet. Swimmers are allowed to sign up for 4 individual events and 1 relay. Saturday meets are scored and therefore competitive. Swimmers and events are chosen by the coaching staff. This process typically includes the two top swimmers (who regularly attend practice onand off-site) with the fastest times in each event. We encourage all swim team members to attend Saturday meets and cheer their teammates on to success. The BIG MEET (which will be run at and organized by Bear Hill this year) is the final championship meet of the season. Swimmers and events are chosen by the coaching staff. Swimmers must have participated in at least 2 Saturday meets in order to be eligible for TBM. The date for this year’s contest is August 13 (diving TBA). Swim team suits will be available at the May 19 Sign-up meeting for fittings. Know that we intend to keep the same color and design as last year. If you are unable to make this meeting, you can visit the Varsity Swim Shop on 157 Main Street in North Reading before the end of May. All team suits ordered by the deadline will be distributed to the team during the first week of practice. Female suits: Male suits: $57.95 $42.95 **Note: Suits can be paid for by check, cash, or credit card. They cannot be charged to your BHGC account. There is a swim/diving team fee of $75 per child payable at the time of sign-up and charged to your BHGC account. SWIM LESSONS. We offer swim lessons for all pool members (at no cost). All classes, except Tiny Tots, meet two times per week for 30 minutes either on a Tuesday/Thursday or a Wednesday/Friday rotation basis. Swim lesson instructors are lifeguard, first aid, and CPR/AED certified. See schedule for further information. New this year is a junior lifeguarding class that will include an accommodation for earning the Boy/Girl Scout Lifeguarding merit badge.
