28. Mrs. Lawrence had $ 87.46 in her savings account. She withdrew $46.30.
Later, she deposited $36.50. What is the new balance in her savings account?
$_$77.66____________________
Write what you did to find the answer.
I started with $87.46 and subtracted the withdrawal of $46.30 which gave me
$41.16. I then added the deposit of $36.50 which gave me a final balance of $77.66.
29. Kendall was working with base-10 blocks. She was using the flat as the
ONE. The longs were tenths. Kendall counted 14 longs –
“one-tenth, two-tenths, three-tenths, four-tenths, five-tenths, six-tenths, seventenths, eight-tenths, nine-tenths, ten-tenths, eleven-tenths, twelve-tenths,
thirteen-tenths, fourteen-tenths”
She wrote 0.14 to show what the blocks were worth. Is Kendall right? Explain.
Kendal is not correct. Ten longs equal a whole and 14 is more than ten so Kendal
has more than one. She wrote that the 14 longs were equal to 14 hundredths when
she should have written that ten longs make a whole, plus the four additional longs
equal one and four tenths or 1.4.
