Around the House Volunteer Newsletter Mark Your Calendars for this Year’s Volunteer Recognition Celebration Friday, September 27, 2013 Plans are being finalized for this year’s Volunteer Recognition Celebration scheduled for the evening of September 27th. This year’s event will be held in the beautiful atrium of the Indianapolis Marion County Central Library. This is a new venue for the RMHI but offers so many amenities that our volunteers appreciate. If you have not visited the Central Library, this room has two floor to ceiling windows so we will be able to enjoy the fall colors. Convenient, and free parking can be found in the underground garage. This year’s, sit-down, plated meal includes a choice of three entrees; tequila grilled chicken with roasted red pepper and honey sauce, cinnamon seared pork loin with maple demi or a vegetarian plate. Everyone will enjoy a garden salad with English cucumber, carrots, grape tomatoes and croutons with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, garlic mashed potatoes, roasted green beans, assorted artisan dinner rolls with whipped butter, coffee and iced tea. To top our meal off, dessert is a trio of miniature sweets including a miniature cheesecake, a white chocolate covered strawberry and a chocolate rum ball. Watch your mailbox for your invitation around the first of September. Gifts of Life Insurance Life insurance can be a convenient way to make a substantial gift to the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana (RMHI) for a relatively modest annual cost. You can use a paid-up policy you no longer need or purchase a new policy to make your gift. You can name the RMHI as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy while retaining ownership of the policy and access to the cash value. However, because you retain ownership and can change the beneficiary, no income tax charitable deduction is allowed for the value of the policy. If you assign a paid up insurance policy to the RMHI as its owner, you can claim a federal income-tax charitable deduction for the policy's fair-market value or the net premiums paid, whichever is less. If the policy is not paid in full, your subsequent premium payments on behalf of the RMHI are also deductible. If you have any questions or need additional information, please call Joe Schulz, Director of Development, at 317-269-2247 or [email protected]. As always, we recommend that you consult with your attorney or tax advisor for the various tax benefits and restrictions that may apply to your specific situation. We are available to you and your advisors to answer questions or help arrange a planned gift to the RMHI. There will be photo opportunities with the world’s largest pop tab, games, music, and an appearance by Ronald McDonald. We continue to collect an astonishing amount of pop tabs in such a few hours at this annual event because of supportive Hoosiers. Help us continue to provide a warm environment and place to stay for families by collecting the tabs off of aluminum can goods. Pull it. Twist it. Pop it. The RMHI is participating in the IUPUI Involvement Fair from 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, August 20th. Mary Friend will be setting up, staffing and tearing down the booth but would love to have company for all or part of the time. Please contact Mary if you would like to join her. Now there is research to back them up! This is an excerpt from a press release from Ronald McDonald House Charities Global. OAK BROOK, IL--(Marketwired - Jul 23, 2013) - A study published today in Families, Systems and Health, a journal of the American Psychological Association, finds that families who stayed together at a Ronald McDonald House®, for even a portion of their seriously-ill child's hospital stay, believed their ability to stay nearby helped their child recover and spend less time in the hospital. This is the first published research to explore the role of family accommodation in enhancing the family experience, psychosocial well-being and perceptions of child recovery for hospitalized, seriously-ill children. The study, funded by the UniHealth Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®), gathered more than 2,000 surveys over a three-year period from family members who stayed at one of five Ronald McDonald Houses in Southern California while their child was hospitalized at a nearby children's hospital. “This study suggests that parents believe there is a clinical benefit to their sick child of onsite or nearby accommodation for them. Beyond the benefits to parents, this reinforces the important role that accommodation services, such as those provided through the Ronald McDonald House program, play in enabling familycentered care for children and families who require extended hospital care and who must travel far distances to receive this care," said Dr. David Herman, president & CEO of Vidant Health and an RMHC, Inc. board of trustee member. Page 2 Loss of a Family Member Tips For Limestone Guest Services Volunteers It is with sadness that we announce that Carl Brown’s father, Arthur “Art” Brown, who resided in Brown County, recently passed away at the age of 90. Carl is a longtime Guest Services Assistant Manager who helps manage the Limestone location on weekends. Please hold Carl and his family in your thoughts and prayers. When someone calls about dropping off an in-kind donation, please ask them to call us before they deliver it if they are not able to bring the items in on their own. This way we can make sure we have help unloading their donation. As part of the check-in process, please remember to complete and file the family’s green “Room and Apartment Inventory” sheet. Having this to refer to when the family checks out is very helpful. Welcome back to all the students returning after their summer break. If you have not already done so, please contact Mary Friend or Daun Hughey to discuss your new on-going schedule. Substitute List Please call these volunteers if you need a substitute.
