CORE STABILITY REHABILITATION WHAT IS CORE STABILITY? Our core consists of all the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that connect our upper extremities to our lower extremities. A strong core that is initiated during exercise and daily living will stabilize our spine by increasing the pressure that surrounds each disc. Having a strong core will maximize performance in all activities that require full body movements while enhancing our balance and coordination which diminishes over time and with inactivity. Core rehabilitation is crucial to restoring full function of the spine while minimizing the risk of re-injury. Core rehabilitation is usually done in 15 minute increments in sets of 3. These exercises can be done with own body weight, bands, and/or weights. COMMON QUESTIONS Is yoga good for my core? This question depends on type of yoga, stage of life, and physical capabilities of each person on an individual basis. There are certain yoga poses that will restore function of your body but others that may aggravate your current condition or symptom. If I do sit-ups is that good enough? Sit-ups are usually done incorrectly and can compress discs and cause muscular imbalances. You can strengthen you core without even doing sit-ups and your core should be active during all physical activity. WHAT OUR PATIENTS HAVE TO SAY: “They treated the injury and educated me on how to correctly strengthen myself to avoid further injury. Every time I left their office I felt better. As I continue to do the daily exercises they taught me, I still feel strong with none of my previous pains reoccurring.” Mary, MVP patient since 2012
