FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents,
I write at the end of a busy and eventful Spring term.
During the term, we have seen academic progress as
many of the pupils have made great strides. The Year
11 pupils completed their mock exams and have
moved to the final assessments and revision. The Prep
pupils brought home their mid-year reports which
reflected excellent progress by many pupils. The
GCSE results of last summer were at last confirmed
by the DfE which gave rise to several league tables
placing the school in a very favourable position and
well above all other independent schools in the South
West.
There has been considerable sporting success with
individual success in Swimming and Cross Country
running. The teams playing Netball, Hockey and
Rugby have had a very good season with the statistics
being:
40 matches played. Won 23, Drawn 9 and lost 8.
There have been some notable victories, especially the
girls’ netball team against Godolphin, and the mixed
hockey against the Godolphin sixth formers where we
secured a draw despite our team being two years
younger.
The Art Department has been exceptionally busy. The
Department has displays in the Medical Centre on
Wilton Road, the Five Rivers Leisure Centre, as well
as organised the “Library of Ideas” art exhibition in
the Young Gallery above the library. Two pupils have
EASTER 2017
been selected to represent the South West Region with
the artwork going through to the National ISA Art
competition later this year.
The Seniors have been involved in the excellent dramatic
evening with the title of an “Evening with Roald Dahl”.
Many of the best performances came from pupils who
are often quite shy and self-conscious and yet, on the
stage, they took on a new persona. The Prep pupils
excelled in the Year 3 and 4 concert which reflected their
growing musical skills.
Recently, thanks to the work of Hannah Norton in Year
5, the school had the privilege of seeing a film called
“The Secret Spitfire”, a factual account of how over
2,000 Spitfires were built during the second world war in
the back streets of Salisbury. The lead engineer of this
project was available to answer questions from the pupils
despite being over 90.
The Prep pupils have also enjoyed a Science day,
celebrated World Book Day (thanks to many parents
who helped the pupils dress for the day) and have had
trips away: Year 5 to Magdalen Farm and Year 6 to Mill
on the Brue. Senior pupils have also been heavily
involved in various trips including Swanage, Corfe
Castle, Imperial War Museum and London (Science
Museum).
The Governors have been busy too and the school was
inspected by six inspectors from ISI (the Independent
Schools Inspectorate) from 13th to the 16th March
inclusive. Thank you to all the parents and pupils who
contributed to the online surveys. The inspection report
will be published as soon as I am able to release the
information and I, along with the Governors, are
looking forward to sharing the outcomes with you. Please
see the latest annual Governors report from the new
Chairman of Governors, Mr Richard Thorp.
At this time of year, the Senior Head Pupils step
down from their duties to concentrate on their
revision for GCSE exams and a new batch of Head
Pupils and Prefects replace them.
My thanks go to Arthur Cooper and Millie
Wolverson and all the Year 11 prefects for their help
this year.
I welcome Sebastian Southon as Head Boy and
Annabel Spain as Head Girl. Congratulations go to
them and the following who have been made prefects:
Henry Carter, Scarlett Cooper, Zoë Glendinning,
Lukas Kinnear, Charles Knight, Michael Lee, Archie
Mould, Saahir Nazar, Sam Proudfoot (Games
Captain), Tom Softley, and Library prefects,
Georgiana Bell and Elizabeth Kinerk. I look forward
to seeing each play their part in helping the school
develop in the next year.
As the Easter sunshine streams into the school and
the term draws to a close, I wish you a very happy and
joyous Easter.
Head Pupils
School day
Parents are reminded that pupils should not be left at
Leehurst Swan before 8.00 am. Supervision of pupils
starts at 8.00 am and the school cannot be responsible
for pupils before this time. We encourage pupils to arrive
from 8.15 am onwards but make provision for those who
arrive at 8.00 am. Thank you for your co-operation to
ensure the safety of pupils.
PREP DEPARTMENT
Prep Chess Club
Twenty pupils have taken part in the school round of the
Delancey Chess Competition this term.
Prep Chess continues to be popular. A number of Prep
pupils have chosen Chess as one of their weekly activity
periods.
In addition, the after school club this term has proved
equally popular with Key Stage 2 pupils
Mill on the Brue
Y6 pupils with Miss Tyrrell, Mrs Wilson, and Mr Thomas
have enjoyed a week at the Mill on the Brue Activity centre
in Bruton, Somerset.
BIKEABILITY
Twenty two pupils from Years 5 and 6 took part in Bikeability
this term and gained Levels 1 and 2. Well done!
They took part in a variety of activities such as canoeing,
archery, tunnelling, assault course, spider’s web,
problem solving, wall climbing, tree climbing and grass
tobogganing.
Magdalen Farm
Y5 pupils with Mrs Bayliss, Mr Thomas and Mrs Kay
enjoyed two days including an overnight stay at
Magdalen Farm in Somerset.
SENIOR SCHOOL
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
An Evening with Roald Dahl
Leehurst Swan Senior School staged a sparkling rendition of
‘Matilda the Musical’ together with extracts from ‘Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory’, ‘The BFG’ and ‘The Witches’ on
Thursday the 23rd March for the Senior School production.
Parents and friends were greeted by the Oompa Loompas
and given a golden ticket and some Wonka treats before
being shown to their seats. It proved to be a most enjoyable
evening filled with the deliciously dark Dahl characters who
were superbly portrayed by our talented pupils. Well done to
all involved.
There were team building activities and a chance to learn
more about farming and the countryside.
Thanks. Everyone was impressed by the team's poise and
confidence. Well done to all.
2017 ISA Essay Writing Competition
All students from Year 5-11 have been encouraged to enter
the 2017 ISA Essay Writing Competition and some wonderful
stories have been written.
World Book Day
Well done to Zoe Thomas (Year 6) Benjamin Burgess (Year
6) Adam Cowlam (Year 8) Hattie Bunce (Year 7), Elizabeth
Kinnerk Cowlam (Year 8) Hattie Bunce (Year 7), Elizabeth
Kinnerk (Year 10) and Michael Lee (Year 10) whose stories
were short listed to be sent off. We will be holding an
internal selection from each year group and winners will be
announced next term. Thank you to everyone who wrote a
story.
LOVE READING students will be bringing home some reading
lists with recommendations for excellent reads. Happy
reading and Happy Easter from the English Department.
HUMANITIES
The English Department has had a busy term and we
recently celebrated World Book Day in style in the Senior
Department. During the day, at the beginning of the
day, every teacher read a section of The Destructors, a
short story by Graham Greene. This meant by the end of
the day the whole story had been read to everyone in the
senior school. The story is thought provoking and held
the attention of the students. Students made some
interesting observations about the story later in English
lessons.
On January 26th, our junior team competed in the Rotary
Club Youth Speak Competition. Penny Bunyan spoke
eloquently about homelessness and was ably supported
by Joshua Banton as Chair and Ruaraidh Collar as Vote of
HISTORY DEPARTMENT
Imperial War Museum
On Wednesday, 1st March Year 9 visited the Imperial War
Museum in London. We travelled to Waterloo from Salisbury
by train and then walked to the Museum, which is only a few
minutes away. The focus of the visit was a Study Session on
the Holocaust followed by a tour of the Holocaust Exhibition.
We found the exhibition very moving, particularly the very
personal exhibits on show. We also spent time in the First
World War Galleries, which were very interesting as this is
what we are currently studying back at school.
GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT
Swanage Bay and Corfe Castle
On 6th March, Year 8 enjoyed a blustery day walking
from Studland village to Swanage Bay, learning about
coastal landform and warming up by eating fish and
chips! They will be presenting their findings as a leaflet
to guide other school groups.
Year 8 finished their day on the south coast by visiting
Corfe Castle. Year 8 are currently studying the lead up to
the English Civil War in which Corfe Castle played a major
role. Our guide, Elizabeth, was excellent and enjoyed
telling us interesting stories about the wicked King John.
It was said Corfe was his favourite castle. The building
was destroyed in the Civil War by the Parliamentarians so
we had to use our imaginations to consider what it would
have been like when it was first constructed.
Nevertheless, a great time was had by all.
Lampedusa, he was moved to gather the driftwood from the
wrecked boats and turn them into crosses, which he offered
to survivors as a small but powerful symbol of hope.
MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES
DEPARTMENT
After a few weeks' great work on shops, Year 5 had a lovely
time playing shop-keeper in French. We had Euros, shop
fronts, some handmade shopping bags and the all-important
shopping lists to guide us through our very own
French shopping experience. Magnifique!
ART, DESIGN and PHOTOGRAPHY
DEPARTMENT
Since the start of January, the Art and Photography
Department have had an exceptionally busy but rewarding
time. It began with our three month exhibition at Five Rivers
Health and Well-being Centre which showcased the work of
our pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 over the last couple of
years.
Year 10 Geographers have been using playdough to
model coastal landforms, whilst Year 9 have been
modelling waterfalls.
Year 7 have produced some super reports analysing the
refugee crisis and deciding whether or not they would risk
taking the journey across the Mediterranean. If you are
visiting the British Museum in the Easter holidays it might
be worth looking at the Lampedusa Cross and taking
some time to reflect. Increasingly we are witnessing
families and communities being pulled apart, with many
risking – and losing – their lives in a bid to reach safety in
Europe. Yet even seemingly small acts can make a
massive difference. One example of this is Francesco
Tuccio, a carpenter from the small Italian island of
Lampedusa. When hundreds of refugees who were
fleeing Eritrea and Somalia drowned off the coast of
In February we exhibited again within Salisbury Library for
four weeks as part of the Salisbury Schools Art exhibition, this year entitled ‘A Library of Ideas’. This featured the work
of Year 10 photographers, Year 9 pupils and Years 5 and 6
pupils. It was a collaboration with nine other schools from in
and around Salisbury and the event was opened by
Councillor Hoque and drew in a large number of parents,
pupils and governors to the Private view. We received some
excellent reviews in the local press and comments book. Two
of our pupils gained prizes (Francesca Holtby, Year 6 and
Hari Chowdhury, Year 5) and certificates from the
competition which MP John Glen presented to them on the
closing night of the exhibition.
At the South West regional ISA competition in March we
managed to win two categories, Best Key Stage 2 individual
3D piece and Best Key stage 4 individual 3D piece
(Francesca Holtby and Jo Lucas-Pickup), and we gained
a second place in the Key Stage 4 Photography category
(Annabel Spain, Year 10). The winners will go forward to
the National ISA final in November.
they were a very well-travelled bunch. Three ended up in
London, at London Underground, The British Library and the
BBC and one went to Kent County Education Offices. Two
undertook medical placements at the Orchard Surgery and
NHS Salisbury Foundation Trust.
Leehurst Swan
accommodated the six who were unable to go to parents’
workplaces; three girls had a very enjoyable day at the Pre
Prep departments and Mrs Saxon, Miss Tyrrell, Mr Liversage
and Mrs Searle were able to provide meaningful days for the
remaining three pupils. They all enjoyed themselves, no-one
complained he or she had nothing to do or was bored and
that is a partly a tribute to the pupils themselves who were
trusted to help with quite challenging activities. These
included editing websites, shredding confidential papers and,
in Freddie’s case, helping to show a school group around
Salisbury Museum! I would like to thank all those employers
who took our pupils and the pupils themselves who clearly
behaved admirably.

PSHCE
A variety of external speakers, as well as courses led by our
own staff, have enriched this term’s PSHCE lessons.
This term many pupils in Year 6 have brought their pet
dog into school to model in their lessons. This has proved
a great hit and they have produced some very good
drawings.
Preparations are now underway for Artshop (a chance for
schools to exhibit in a shop window in Salisbury for two
weeks) which is due to start after May half term.
We are also very excited about a new initiative starting
next term. Ruth Williams who is a designer/maker will be
our Artist in Residence making her own hand thrown
ceramics and giving help and advice to our pupils in the
Art Department next term.
We wish all Year 11 artists and photographers well taking
their final exams at the end of April.
CAREERS DEPARTMENT
Take Our Children to Work Day : Friday 3rd March
2017
rd
School was unusually quiet on Friday 3 March as Year 8
was out on ‘Take Our Children to Work Day’. This year
Years 9 and 10 have had Sex Education talks delivered by a
school nurse and Y11 explored marriage with the help of
some visiting couples. Personal safety was the subject of an
excellent session delivered to Years 10 and 11 by Alan
Aldersley-Byre, Wiltshire Constabulary Schools’ Liason
Officer. The aim was to help them recognise risky
situations and to prevent them becoming victims of violence
or crime. Alan also spoke to Year 8 about knife crime and
cyber safety. Local magistrate Denis Twomey came into
school and told Y10 about his work in the courts, asking
pupils what they would do with certain cases. As well as
external speakers, Mrs Piner has led excellent sessions on
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. We have
had a very busy term!
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Well done and congratulations to everyone who has taken
and passed an external Music Examination this term; some
excellent results were achieved. Well done, also, to pupils
who have played in assemblies this term.
At the Open Morning earlier this month the visitors were
entertained by pupils from Year 5 who sang songs from ‘The
Sound Of Music’, and the senior wind ensemble who
played a French dance and the theme from ‘The Great
Escape’.
Recently the parents of pupils in Years 3 and 4 were
entertained in a concert of songs, instrumental items,
solos, ocarina pieces and a violin/viola ensemble. It was
encouraging to see pupils singing, playing instruments
and dancing enthusiastically. Thank you to Miss
Trenchard for organising and rehearsing the Year 3 string
ensemble.
Choir, and the Prep and Senior orchestras accompanied the
congregational hymns.
Finally, it is pleasing to see the diversity of musical
instruments that pupils in both the Prep and the Senior
Schools are learning. Please contact Mr Thomas or Mrs
Boddy if your child is keen to take advantage of individual
instrumental lessons at school. We do have a stock of
instruments which may be borrowed, free of charge, by
pupils learning instruments at school.
CHARITY NEWS
This has been an extremely busy term for fundraising and,
as always, pupils and staff from Leehurst Swan have been
generous with time, effort and money.

SPORTS DEPARTMENT NEWS
This has been a fantastic term of Sporting success.
Last week the Walker Hall hosted an evening with Roald
Dahl; an evening of drama and music performed by a
number of pupils from the Senior Department. Well done
to all of the terrific performers, and thank you to all of the
members of staff involved, in particular Mrs North, Mrs
Willan and Miss Tyrrell.
At the Easter service the themes of crucifixion and
resurrection were explored. Anthems were sung by the

Swimming
Please would you make sure your child brings in a swimming
hat and goggles for swimming lessons. The swimming
coaches do not carry spares.
Please would parents write a note to their child's Form
Teacher to withdraw him/her from swimming or other
sporting activity on a school day if he/she is unable to take
part due to illness or injury. However, we hope that a pupil
will take part if possible as exercise will help recovery. We
will always adapt the session so the pupil can do something.
Always ensure pupils bring their games kit just in case.
Cygnets’ Swimming Lessons
With effect from April 2016, the cost of swimming lessons in
the Pre-School on Tuesday afternoons will increase from
£17.00 per term to £20.00 per term.

On the afternoon of Friday 24th September all pupils from
Year 3 to Year 11 attended an amazing film on the Spitfires
which were made secretly in Salisbury during World War II,
following the bombing of the Southampton factory.
To prevent another German attack, the workshops were
hidden behind the Wiltshire and Dorset bus garage, Wessex
Motors and Anna Valley Motors. About 2,500 Spitfires were
made in Salisbury, which makes it the most productive of all
the secret locations (which included Reading and
Trowbridge).
Care, under these circumstances, until the time scheduled
for collection of the team members. The usual charges will
apply for After School Care for team members left after that
time.
HOMEWORK CLUB
Prep pupils in Years 3 to 6 who are not collected at the end
of the school day should attend Homework Club until 4.30
p.m. free of charge.
Many of the workers were women and it was through
Hannah’s, one of our Year 5 girls research into women in
World War 2 that the film was shown at Leehurst Swan.
After the film the pupils were able to question 91 year old
Norman Parker, a local historian and engineer, who
helped supervise the operation. Not surprisingly, he had
a lot of questions to answer from an enthusiastic
audience.
It was a fascinating, educational and, for some of
quite emotional documentary. We hope that it
awakened an interest in the history of our wonderful
and an understanding of how important the work of
Spitfire makers was in the outcome of the war.

winners. You’ll be pleased to know the LHS teachers won –
our children’s education is in safe hands!
The course is run by a team of experienced staff who
have become legendary for their energy, enthusiasm and

FOLS NEWS
Summer Hoe Down: On Saturday 1st July FoLS will be
holding an American Hoe Down. Thank you to Beth
Collier who will be organising this with some of our other
American families. I’m sure it will be a great evening.
Details soon!
Easter Fair: We had a very successful Fair again this
year, which raised over £450. Thanks to everyone who
helped out with running the stalls, and to all the parents
that supplied some lovely cakes.
As you may be aware Campbell Road is too narrow for
coaches so we arrange for day trips to depart from and
arrive at the junction of Netheravon Road and St Mark’s
Avenue. However, parents are sometimes delayed and this
means a long and cold wait both for the children and the
member of staff who has arranged the trip. For these
reasons we have decided that in future:
Staff and children will wait at Netheravon Road/St Mark’s
Road until the time of collection, given on the initial letter,
has been reached.
Then the children will be walked back to school where
parents can collect them. If this is before 5pm Senior pupils
will attend Homework Club and Prep pupils will attend
Homework Club to 4.30, then go to After School Care.
This means that if you are delayed collecting your child, you
will know to go straight to school.
Occasionally trips arrive back more than quarter an hour late
or early. In this case we will contact you from the coach and
also alert Reception at school.
NEW UNIFORM NOTICE
As from the end of this academic year (July 2017) John
Lewis will no longer supply the school uniform for Leehurst
Swan.

fantastic evening with great food. Congratulations to the
We are very pleased to announce that DJ Uniforms – a wellestablished on-line supplier of school uniforms to many
independent schools – has been appointed as Leehurst Swan

Hot lunch Provision Summer Term
Please note that the hot lunches will commence on the first
day of the Summer Term, Tuesday 25th April.
If you currently book hot lunches from Leaden Hall
Enterprises it will be assumed that you wish your child to
continue to have them on the same days as for the Spring
Term 2017 but if you wish to change the lunch days for the
Spring Term (or have any other information which requires
updating) please complete and return the form which has
been emailed to you to [email protected] Friday
15th April.
If you would like your child to start hot lunches in the
Spring term, please complete the registration section of the
Hot Lunch form which has been emailed to parents and
return it to: [email protected] by Friday 15th
April.
The new website has been designed to provide the
ultimate user-friendly experience with improved
navigation and functionality throughout, allowing parents
to access detailed information on trips, sports fixtures and
school events.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
If your child is unexpectedly absent, please telephone
Reception to report him/her absent by 9:00 am. If you
wish to e-mail the school to confirm your child’s absence
please send the email to Reception by 9:00 am. The email address must be a unique parental address already
notified to the school. If your child has a medical
appointment during school hours, please advise his/her
form teacher beforehand or telephone Reception.
If you would like to cancel hot lunches for the Summer Term
please email [email protected] by Friday 15th
April.
The hot lunch provision has proved to be popular this term
with a record number of pupils participating. However some
parents forget to cancel the cooked meal if their child is
away on a trip. Cancellation needs to be made directly to
[email protected] (who supply and cook the
lunches) and they require at least a week’s notice in
advance.
If pupils need to eat their cooked lunch earlier than usual,
because they are departing for a sports match or similar,
then Leehurst Swan School will make the arrangements
direct with the catering department.
PARENTAL ABSENCE FROM HOME
YEAR 11 PUPILS – HOT LUNCHES
Parents are also reminded to inform the school in writing,
if they are going away for a few days, of the change in
care and contact information for their child/ren.
Their official last day of term is Thursday 11th May as they
are then on study leave, however some pupils still come to
school to study. Please inform [email protected]
whether you child requires a hot lunch after 11 May. SCS
(Leaden Hall Enterprises) will assume that they do unless
informed otherwise.

CONTACT WITH STAFF
Prep staff form teachers are always happy to see parents
informally at 8.30am or at 3.35 pm. If you need more than a
few minutes to discuss matters please feel free to make
an
appointment
by
ringing
or
e-mailing:
[email protected]. Your request will be
passed on to the teacher concerned.
Senior staff are also very happy to see parents, but need
a little warning. It is necessary to make an appointment
at Reception or, if urgent, call into Reception and ask to
speak to the teacher concerned. Although the school is
open to parents it is not possible for parents to wander
the corridors or wait outside the staff room to catch
teachers since many have tight schedules and teaching
lessons should start on time.
GIVING MESSAGES TO PUPILS
If you wish a message to be relayed to your child, (for
example for Homework Club, After School Care, change
of going home arrangements etc.), we would request that
parents telephone Reception and speak to a member of
staff before 12.45 p.m. This is so that the information can
be given to your child during the registration after lunch
break.
It is realised that there will be some
circumstances when this may not be possible.
UNIFORM REGULATIONS
Parents are reminded that details of the school uniform
are available on the web site. Pupils are expected to
adhere to the rules. Skirts that are too short and shirts
that are untucked continue to be a problem with some
pupils. I ask that parents support the school in ensuring
our pupils are smartly dressed. Pupils must also wear
their blazers from Y5 in school.
We are very grateful to the many parents who support
the school uniform and I am always pleased when pupils
gain positive comments about their appearance.
clothing, mostly sports kit, in school. Please ensure all
clothing is labelled correctly especially second hand uniform,
where former owners’ names may still be present.
Please check your child’s kit when it comes home carefully.
Many lost items are the result of them being put in the
wrong bag. If your child has the wrong kit, please return it
to school as quickly as possible. We try to encourage
children to be tidy in the changing rooms and take
responsibility for their kit.
MOBILE PHONES AND LAPTOPS
Parents are reminded that if pupils bring mobile phones and
laptops into school they should ensure that parental controls
have been enabled. These devices must not be allowed
unrestricted access to the Internet whilst in school.
FIRST AID
Parents are reminded that Leehurst Swan has a trained first
aid member of staff on duty at all times. If a child is unwell
or injured he/she must seek assistance at Reception in the
first instance; we would then contact parents by telephone.
Parents are asked to support this approach so that all
illnesses and injuries can be investigated and recorded. If it
is necessary for parents to collect a child from school,
parents will be informed.
First aiders are of course willing to help any child who has
been injured or needs treatment at school but should not be

SUMMER UNIFORM
ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINE IN SCHOOL
Summer uniform for all boys and girls may be worn when
we return after Easter. It is compulsory from half term

Please would parents ensure that if their child requires an
asthma inhaler or EpiPen, that one is brought into school

your child’s name on it) in case it is needed.
Prep pupils must not wear open toed sandals for safety
reasons.
Please would parents ensure that all uniform is named.

parents and staff. Pupils continue to lose items of
Please also ensure medication is taken home at the end
of every term and checked to see if the medication is still
in date. Medication supplied to be stored at school should
not expire during the course of the term.
Please would parents complete the appropriate form if they
wish staff to administer medication to their child which has
been prescribed by a doctor. A copy of the form is available
to download from the School website.
Holiday Club and Wrap-Around Care
Holiday Club Parental Survey
If you haven’t yet responded to the Holiday Club survey
please complete it at the link below. If you have any
additional comments or requests, please do write to the
school directly. I am meeting with the provider over the
Easter holidays, this meeting will confirm whether a
scheme run at the school is viable. Please also feel free
to share the link with parents outside the school who may
be looking for a holiday care provision.
