MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear St. Agnes School Parents,
Last evening, our eighth grade boys’ basketball team members were honored since
it is their last year to represent St. Agnes School in sports. I commend our eighth grade
boys on their team spirit and sportsmanship. I commend them, also, on their Student
Council leadership this year. They are a very fine eighth grade group! We are enjoying
the year with them.
Also, last evening, our students, their parents and the parent chaperones who are
representing St. Agnes in the March for Life trip to Washington DC met with Kyle Holtgrave,
the Diocesan Youth Director who organizes and leads this trip. Mr. Holtgrave gave students
and parents a descriptive schedule of the activities that are part of the trip. We are very
excited that fourteen students and three chaperones will join four buses of Diocesan youths
for this trip. Students and chaperones received identifying sweatshirts, scarves and hats to
wear for the March and activities in Washington. Please keep them in prayer as they
continue to prepare.
Our first semester ends tomorrow, Friday, January 13th. Report cards will be emailed for students in grades K-8 next Friday, January 20th. Report cards for Preschoolers
will be given out at their conferences, Thursday, January 19th or Friday, January 20th. I
am very proud of the grades of our Junior High students. I want to commend them for
their effort and achievement. This would be a very good time to reflect with your child on
his/her progress. Please do not hesitate to contact teachers with any questions or
concerns you might have.
In this winter weather, children are asked to dress warmly with hats and gloves.
Some days we are able to get outside. Thanks to our patrols who brave the winter
weather. It is very important that our patrols have coats zipped and hats and gloves on.
We are grateful that our Jr. High students help with this important service.
I ask parents to follow the procedures for arrival and dismissal of students. Only
preschool have permission to park near the school unless you are inside the school on
business at dismissal time. Parents/grandparents who consistently park near the school
are asked to follow the policies that others are asked to follow unless you have contacted
me regarding a serious reason for needing a different arrangement for parking. One
parent has paid through the Gala for a special parking space throughout the year. Please
do not use the rectory parking area for arrival and dismissal of students or parking on
Amos as it is very dangerous for students to cross the moving traffic at dismissal time.
The teachers and I are calling your students to follow these procedures. Please help us
keep your children safe.
SCRIP will no longer be available from a parked car on Fridays. It can be obtained
from the office and after the Masses on Sunday or online if you wish. The office has the
SCRIP case Monday through Friday at dismissal. To assure your order, please use the
early order form, especially when the quantities of cards you need are larger. Thank you
for all of your support for this program. The Parents’ Club is looking for someone to assist
with SCRIP, especially to help promote the SCRIP program through notices in the
Thursday letter, bulletin, etc. If you would be willing to consider this, please contact
Amanda Field
Catholic Schools Week is one of our favorite times of the year. This year’s theme is
“Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service celebrates the fact that
Catholic Schools are communities who work together to teach our Catholic faith, academic
excellence and living an active faith through service. Because of our traditionally high
academic standards, supported by strong moral values, Catholic Schools and their
graduates make a significant contribution to our local community and world.
2
Hopefully, you received the copy of your family project to be displayed for Catholic
Schools Week. Please send in your family project by Monday, January 23rd, so that we
can begin working with this display. The projects are to depict some act of kindness that
your family was involved in through a picture or an explanation of that project. The
hearts will hang on a “Tree of Kindness” in the school hall through the month of February
and our Open House for the public on Tuesday, February 21st.
Sixth graders will gather with sixth grade students from the other Catholic schools
to celebrate “National School Choice week” at Christ the King School on Tuesday,
January 24th. Students are asked to bring with them items for “Harvard Park Bag of
Blessings.” Harvard Park is addressing the food shortages that many of their school
families are facing. St. Agnes sixth graders are asked to bring instant oatmeal packets,
peanut butter and soup. The students will participate in a prayer service and a fun
creative movement dance!
Our third graders will be joining with the other Springfield Area Catholic schools on
Friday, January 27th for a day of special activities at Little Flower School. We have named
this day: “TGIF – Third Graders in Faith.” The students have an opportunity to gather in
small groups with other Catholic school elementary third graders. It is always a fun day.
Next week, we will be working with families who are willing to participate in the
Mass that begins Catholic Schools Week. We start our week by celebrating our faith
together. All students and their families are encouraged to attend the 9:30 a.m. Mass on
Sunday, January 29th. Students are asked to wear their school uniforms to witness to our
Parish your choice of Catholic education. We will be presenting the Alumni of the Year
award to parishioner Ellen Kuntzi at this Mass. There will be an Open House in the school
and donuts and juice provided by the Parents’ Club after the 8:00 a.m. Mass and the
9:30 a.m. Masses only. Teachers will be in their classrooms after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. You
are welcome to bring other family members or family friends who might be interested in
becoming a part of our school family.
Wednesday of Catholic Schools Week is the parent lunch day. This year families will
have an opportunity to eat together. The division of lunches can be found in the attached
form for the parent lunch day. All children from the same family will eat together. Parents
will be asked to take a seat at the tables in the cafeteria or gym and wait for your children
to arrive, then move into the cafeteria line. If you have preschoolers, you are asked to
pick them up in their classroom first, then go to the cafeteria.
More details of the week’s activities will be in next week’s Newsletter.
Special thanks to so many who continue to help us with the Box Tops for Education.
Recently, we received a check for $1,485.40 for this program – thanks to your collections!
Each of these box tops earns money for the school . Thank you! Thank you!
If you have not had a chance to review the new video that is now on our web site
to tell the story of our school, please take a few minutes and watch it! We are very
grateful to HIP Advertising agency for organizing the day of videoing so that we might
have this short video to give others instant information about St. Agnes. As we near the
month of registration for a new school year, which is at the end of February, I ask parents
to assist us in inviting others that you know to consider our school program. You are the
best storytellers! Share this video through FACEBOOK! That is a way to get our message
out!
Attention Eighth Grade Parents…Eighth grade graduates will be
photographed on Friday, February 10th instead of in January as the original
calendar stated. This was a change made by Lifetouch. This will be a dress-up day
for eighth graders. Please make sure boys’ hair is trimmed up and off their collars and
that all students wear appropriate attire. Boys are asked to wear a tie, one color dress
3
shirt (no loud colors), a jacket, if possible, for this day. Students often share their
jackets. Girls’ dresses must be modest. Spaghetti straps are not permitted unless worn
with a jacket. No tight, low-cut, tanks or midriff tops and only acceptable length skirts
and dresses should be worn by the girls. Graduation retakes are scheduled for March
10th.
Reflection: “Choose an Attitude of Gratitude” taken from a gift given to me
this Christmas…A Daybook of Gratitude: How to Live Each Day with a Thankful
Heart
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the
attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way
your mind looks at what happens. Circumstances and situations do color life,
but you have been given the mind to choose what the color will be.”
-John Homer Miller
With gratitude,
Sr. Joan
Scott & Shannon Ilsley
and
ISI Printing (James Palazzolo)
for their generous support through their participation in our
M.A.G.I.C. MATCH Business Education Partnership Program.
Parents please support our sponsors who give to our school.
ABSENTEES
Each parent/guardian is required to notify the school office by 8:30 a.m. if a child
will be absent that day. Homework requests may be made at this time. Parents can
always leave a message on the school answering machine if the secretary cannot be
reached. The answering machine is checked regularly.
A call should be made each day the student is absent, unless it is known that the
child will miss several consecutive days. If such is the case, the school can be informed
with the first phone call of the consecutive absence and the reason.
GRADE K
Can you believe the first semester will end tomorrow and your children are half way
through kindergarten? They are really blossoming! The report cards will be on line next
Friday. This week we are on letter K. We are learning about Martin Luther King, JR. He
was a real peace builder! Don't forget to get started on your 100 collection. Keep
warm. Students of the week: KA - Charlee Rupnik, KB - Harper Wieneke. Parent
Readers: KA - Mrs. Wells, KB - Mrs. Norris.

More Than 100 Attend The Four Signs
of a Dynamic Catholic Book Program
WOW!
Approximately 110 parishioners, along
with a sprinkling of others from nearby parishes,
took part in the successful launch of the The
Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic group
discussion program last Sunday (Jan. 8) in the
St. Agnes Parish Hall. The program explored the
first chapter of The Four Signs of a Dynamic
Catholic and its introduction to prayer, study,
generosity and evangelization as guides for
becoming “the very best version of yourself”
and, in the process, a more Dynamic Catholic.
The next group discussion session will be held
Sunday afternoon, January 29, from 3:30-4:30
p.m. in the St. Agnes Parish Hall. The program
will dive into the book’s second chapter and its
focus on prayer as the means to achieve and
maintain excellent spiritual health. If you
missed the first session last Sunday, don’t
worry. You’re more than welcome to attend
the program on January 29.
All discussion programs are free.
Complimentary cookies (fresh and homebaked!) with coffee, iced tea and water will be
provided. Also … a very limited supply of books
remains available for those who haven’t obtained a copy. Contact Ed McDowall, volunteer program
coordinator, if you need a copy for yourself or perhaps another with whom you would like to share the
message it provides. Ed can be reached by voice or text at (217) 341-1780 or by email at
[email protected].
