Article Photos The scholarship is named for the late wife of Rotary District 5000 Assistant District Gov. Ron Capanash, who is a member of the Kihei Sunrise club. She promoted quality educational experiences for students on Maui prior to her passing in 2007. The scholarships are for $500 and given to support education after graduation from Kihei Public Charter High School. The school’s commencement was Saturday. Carter will attend Portland State University in Oregon, where she will pursue a teaching career. In high school, she was involved in the Key Club, Prom Committee and student government. She volunteers at Kalama Heights retirement community during the school year and for Rainbow Aquatics during the summer. Scholarship recipients Alliena Carter and Travis Roberts are flanked by Ron Capanash (left), assistant governor of Rotary District 5000, which covers Hawaii, and by Larry Laird, president of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise. The club awarded its second annual Doris Ann Capanash Memorial scholarships, which are named for the late wife of Ron Capanash. Roberts plans to stay in Hawaii for higher education. He will start at Maui Community College, then transfer to a four-year institution to study architecture. He has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was a member of the Outdoor Adventure and Hawaiiana clubs in high school. The recipients and their families were invited to a club meeting to be recognized and to receive certificates of achievement and their scholarship checks from President Larry Laird and Capanash. The scholarship program is one of the informational and educational activities of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise, which is a part of Rotary International’s network of more than 32,000 clubs in 207 countries.
