KIHEI — Alliena Carter and Travis Roberts of Kihei
Public Charter High School received the second
annual Doris Ann Capanash Memorial Scholarship of
the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise.

The scholarship is named for the late wife of Rotary
District 5000 Assistant District Gov. Ron Capanash,
who is a member of the Kihei Sunrise club. She
promoted quality educational experiences for
students on Maui prior to her passing in 2007.
The scholarships are for $500 and given to support
education after graduation from Kihei Public Charter
High School. The school’s commencement was
Saturday.
Carter will attend Portland State University in
Oregon, where she will pursue a teaching career. In
high school, she was involved in the Key Club, Prom
Committee and student government. She volunteers
at Kalama Heights retirement community during the
school year and for Rainbow Aquatics during the
summer.
Scholarship recipients Alliena Carter and
Travis Roberts are flanked by Ron
Capanash (left), assistant governor of
Rotary District 5000, which covers
Hawaii, and by Larry Laird, president of
the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise. The club
awarded its second annual Doris Ann
Capanash Memorial scholarships, which
are named for the late wife of Ron
Capanash.
Roberts plans to stay in Hawaii for higher education.
He will start at Maui Community College, then
transfer to a four-year institution to study architecture. He has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and
was a member of the Outdoor Adventure and Hawaiiana clubs in high school.
The recipients and their families were invited to a club meeting to be recognized and to receive
certificates of achievement and their scholarship checks from President Larry Laird and Capanash.
The scholarship program is one of the informational and educational activities of the Rotary Club of Kihei
Sunrise, which is a part of Rotary International’s network of more than 32,000 clubs in 207 countries.
