Man-Scented Candles?
Candles?
Man-Scented
By Jens Odegaard on November 1st, 2012; Brass Magazine Winter 2012
A local teen in central Ohio had a genius idea that took
off. Hart Main had the idea of creating candles that appeal
to men when his younger sister was selling candles for a
fundraiser at school. He wondered why all candles had
“girly” scents. His imagination wandered as he began to
come up with scents most manly men would like.
Hart started the ManCan business with just $100 from his
saving account that he earned from his paper route. He
then borrowed $200 from his parents. He luckily knew
family friends who were in the candle making business.
They helped him get started by picking out some of the
manliest scents he could find.
“There was a lot of trial and error making the candles, a lot of looking things up online and trying different
formulas, which we are still doing today. None of us are expert candle makers... we were making them on our
stove in a pot,” said Hart.
After selling his first ManCan in Fresh Cut Grass scent to his father’s co-worker, the business took off. Hart
continued to create other scents; Bacon, Coffee, Cigar, Gun Powder, Sawdust, Fresh Cut Grass, Cigar Box, Dirt,
Campfire, Santa’s Beard, Memphis Style BBQ, NY Style Pizza, New Mitt, and Grandpa’s Pipe.
When selling a product it is all about the packaging! Hart wanted to create packaging for his ManCans that
would have a manly look to them. Once he saw a soup can sitting on his counter, he instantly though that
would be a great look for his candles!
Business started taking off even more when Hart began to sell his candles in small, local stores. Hart began
to run out of soup cans very quickly and could not keep up with the demand. By purchasing large flats of
soup he was able to have enough cans for his booming business. In return, Hart donated the soup to his
local church and soup kitchens to help feed the hungry. His Church would return the cans once the soup was
eaten.
Hart’s new slogan became “One Candle, One Meal”. Now, not only was Hart helping to feed the hungry;
especially during our current recession, but he was also able to expand his business and hire employees to
help keep up with the demand.
Last year, ManCans sold 25,000 cans, according to Hart. Hart shows that at any age you can take a great
idea and run with it. He started out with only $100 of his own money and expanded into selling something
appealing to customers while helping those in need.

The
Application
Process
The Application
Process
Applying for a job? Here are some tips when filling out an application:
Each business will have its own application for you to complete, but the applications probably are similar.
Hint: Take the job application home and complete it. Once it’s completed, make a photocopy of it. Use that
copy as a source of information each time you need to complete another application. This will save you
from having to think about all the dates and addresses. Of course, some companies might ask for additional
information, but much of the basic information will remain the same.
Safety tip: Don’t include your Social Security Number on your sample, in case you lose the sample document.
Instead, just memorize your Social Security Number.
References: Most employers will ask for references…both business and personal. This is so they can talk to
people about you, your work habits, and some of your personal traits (such as honesty). Yes, it’s legal and it’s
fair. After all, if you were going to hire someone, wouldn’t you want to know if they:

Can be trusted?
Will show up on time?
Will work hard?
Won’t steal?
You get the picture. Remember; keep a copy of your references for future use.
You can visit mfcu.net under the Youth Accounts tab then Student Club to view a sample application that
may help you in the process. There are other great tips that will help you land a job!
