(the table and text shown below are not in actual size) The movie elicits much sympathy for the two royal figures. Upon the death of King George V (played by Michael Gambon), the eloquent Edward VIII (or David, played by Guy Pearce), his eldest son, unwillingly succeeded his father as king. He abdicated ten months later to pursue his freedom and romantic relationship with Mrs Wallis Simpson – a twice-divorced woman. His sudden abdication brought shock and dismay to Prince Albert (or Bertie, played by Colin Firth), who because of his severe speech impediment, never expected to accede to the throne, With great reluctance, Prince Albert became King George VI, the new monarch. Firth’s performance as the verbally awkward prince/king is no doubt impressive and has been rubberstamped in various award ceremonies, it is not just the mechanics’, however, that have won him admiration. On top of his shyness and the gurgles in his throat, Firth touches our hearts with his delivery of King George Vl’s plight and the friendship he built up with his therapist. Therefore, the brilliant acting of Geoffrey Rush, who plays the self-taught speech therapist, should not be ignored, Rush shines as an ‘uncommon commoner’ by challenging the tormented prince to become a man of his own during his quest for his voice as king. This perfect pairing convincingly portrays the profound relationship between Logue and King George Vl. The King’s Speech 7.
