REPORT

COMMUNITY
2016
O R DWAY R E P O R T TO T H E C O M M U N I T Y 2 0 1 6 1
A
mong the things that drew
me to the Ordway are the
quality of its musical theater
productions like Pirates of
Penzance, The Sound of Music
and A Chorus Line—featuring
incredible Minnesota talent both on-stage and behindthe-scenes. And the new Concert Hall has opened
up opportunities for many firsts, like kicking-off our
Dance to Learn program with 600 children; opening
the annual Sally Awards to the general public; hosting
Governor Dayton’s Council on the Martin Luther King,
Jr. Holiday annual celebration; and greater access to
the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival—one of
the largest and best festivals of its kind in the nation.
On my first day on the job we joined Mayor Coleman
in welcoming members of the state legislature. A Night
with Janis Joplin was set to open at the end of the
month, followed by more musical theater, spectacular
world music and dance performances by Hanggai and
TAIKOPROJECT, a special appearance by Pilobolus,
and a Kander & Ebb Broadway Songbook. What an
incredible range of events.
We were also proud to welcome over 47,000
schoolchildren into our theaters, to serve as a nonperformance meeting and gathering place for
businesses and civic organizations, and to be a desired
venue for many performing arts groups who rented
our halls.
It is an honor to be working with passionate board
members and an amazing professional staff and over
300 volunteers to advance the mission of the Ordway.
With your support, we are able to deliver the memories
and inspirational experiences that only the arts can
provide. Thank you for your generous and ongoing
involvement.
T
he Ordway’s season from
July 2015 through June 2016
truly was an exciting one. The first
full season of the new Concert
Hall confirmed that its beautiful
aesthetics and extraordinary
acoustics offer unmatched opportunities for the
Ordway and its Resident Arts Partners, including the
SPCO, the Minnesota Opera, and of course the
Shubert Club.
This past season also witnessed the transition of
leadership from our beloved CEO and President
Patricia Mitchell in December with a series of festive
events celebrating her nine years of devoted service.
I confess I felt more than a little trepidation about how
we could ever fill Patricia’s shoes. Fortunately, our
search committee, co-chaired by Laura McCarten and
David Lilly, performed brilliantly.
In March, we welcomed new President Jamie Grant to
lead the Ordway in our next exciting chapter. Jamie
comes to us from the Long Center in Austin, Texas,
which was transformed under his leadership, and has
30 years of experience in managing a diverse array
of arts organizations and facilities. The optimism and
anticipation we all felt as Jamie began his new role was
more than matched by Jamie’s boundless energy and
enthusiasm. Jamie wasted no time in helping us focus
on achieving the exceptional potential that lies ahead
in collaborative partnerships, offering more days and
nights on our stages with an even more diverse array of
programming, and ensuring that we have the resources
to make it all possible.
It was my great privilege to have chaired the board
during such a dynamic time. I want to thank my fellow
members on the Ordway Board of Directors for their
valued leadership and friendship, and especially the
Ordway staff and volunteers for their tireless devotion,
without whom none of this would be possible. Most
of all, let me extend very special gratitude to you, our
supporters, for your generosity and commitment to
this great institution.
Thank you,
Jamie Grant

THE SOUND
OF MUSIC
The Sound of Music, produced
by the Ordway, charmed over
40,000 patrons during the holiday
season. Along with the other
Ordway-created musical theater
productions—The Pirates of
Penzance, A Chorus Line and two
Broadway Songbooks®—the Musical
Theater Series engaged 65 local
actors and craftspeople.
“
I feel like we’ve spent the whole
year raving about the Ordway’s
productions—and we have—
and [The Sound of Music] is yet
another home run in their string
of homegrown musicals.

PILOBOLUS
By popular demand, Pilobolus
made their triumphant return to the
Ordway in the spring of 2016. Their
choreography incorporated gravitydefying movement and intensity, as
well as humor and whimsy. During their
two nights of performances, Pilobolus
thrilled 1,794 patrons.

ARTS
EDUCATION
During the 2015-2016
schoolyear 47,047 students
throughout Minnesota and
Western Wisconsin attended
a school matinee featuring
a music, dance, or musical
theater performance. Beyond
experiencing a show at the
Ordway, 3,027 schoolchildren
participated in one of our
in-school residencies, artist
talkbacks, workshops or
master classes.
“
I can’t believe that we
could bring our students
to this fantastic venue for a
global performance for
so little money. This was a
great opportunity for our kids!

The Spring Fête tipped its hat
to our annual Children’s Festival
with the theme “Why Should Kids
Have All The Fun?” Ted and Nancy
Weyerhaeuser were honored for
their steadfast support of the
arts. And proceeds of $330,000
supported the Ordway’s arts
education activities.

CHILDREN’S
FESTIVAL
8 O R DWAY R E P O R T TO T H E C O M M U N I T Y 2 0 1 6
The 16th annual Flint Hills International
Children’s Festival featured clowns and
oversized balloons, musical junkyard creations
writ large, and everything in between.
71,433 children and their families experienced
performances by 611 artists and companies
with roots in over 25 nations.
“
It felt amazing to see Asian and
Asian Pacific Islander performers
that my children and I could relate
to. We all loved every moment of
it. It was empowering to see and a
great conversation and opportunity
to educate my kids about potential,
hard work and possibilities for them.
—AUDIENCE MEMBER, Notes from Asia
COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT
Notes from Asia: the Vocabulary of Movement and Sound presented artistic work from the Asian
and Asian-Pacific Islander American community (AAPIA), and over the course of the year engaged
with 14,468 people through 36 events. Notes from Asia connected four international artists/groups—
Hanggai, TAIKOPROJECT, Dengue Fever, and SEOP Dance Company—with the Twin Cities and
great Minnesota community, and provided opportunities and space for local artists to deepen the
impact of the project. Public performances, school matinees, community discussions, master classes,
workshops, and film screenings were held throughout the season to bring the rich stories of AAPIA
cultures to a wider audience.

PRESENTATION OF PILOBOLUS was made possible in
part by the generosity of those individuals and organizations
who contributed to the Patricia A. Mitchell Fund for Dance.
The fund, established in 2015 in honor of Patricia’s eight-year
tenure as President and CEO of the Ordway, supports
the presentation and commission of Ordway contemporary
dance presentations over the next two years.
In Remembrance
DE BRA A N N SIT 1960-2015
Debbie was an ardent supporter of the arts and of the Ordway, and will
always be remembered as a pillar of the artistic community. She served
with distinction on the Ordway board of directors for eight years, both
in the Office of Secretary and as Chair of the Endowment Investment
Committee. Debbie was a passionate champion of the arts, and the Ordway
benefited incredibly both from her leadership and her enthusiastic
support of the World Music & Dance Series.
