FROM THE EA’s
Despite the sun now getting up at 6am, have you found it harder to get out of bed and organise
children for school? End of term can be a trying time for parents, children and teachers as energy
levels are depleted and emotions become more active and pressing. What to do?
Parentingideas.com.au covers a range of issues from behaviour to getting more conversations at
home. Michael Grose not only recommends getting prep and primary aged children in bed by 8pm
but also provides strategies for achieving this goal. National debate has seen the term ―sleep debt‖
and discussed the negative effect that lack of sleep has on children, adolescents and adults.
Regular, rhythmical routines help. Speak to any prep teacher and they will identify the importance
of these three ―rs‖. In our modern world it seems harder to achieve these rhythms. It requires
consciousness and effort especially from parents but hopefully such effort supports the child to
grow into a well-balanced, self-directed individual.
Another pressure of the modern world that parents deal with is that of choice and allowing children
choice. In ―The Education of the Child in the Light of Anthroposophy‖ Steiner is quite blunt:
―Nothing more harmful can be done to a child than to awaken too early his/her independent
judgement.‖ Therefore in good parenting children‘s boundaries will be clearly defined by stating
―this is what‘s happening‖ and not offering choice.
Preparations are now underway for the Spring Festival
and here is a photo of Class 4 encountering a maypole.
The Spring Festival Programme will be in next week‘s
newsletter. Until then, sleep well.

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
There have been some quiet weeks in the High School. This week Class 10 is back from their work
experience in secondary industry. Class 11 are back from their Botany Field trip on Fraser Island
and Class 9 are still away on their Farming Camp on a Bio-Dynamic farm at Theodore. The word
from Tim is that the camp is going really well and they will be back next week.
The Botany Field trip went exceptionally well and next week there will be a more comprehensive
article written about the camp including showcasing some of the students‘ written work as well as
their painting. The students walked across the Island from East to West and then from West to East,
over 6 days – walking, writing, identifying and painting as they went. It was a real pleasure to be
with them and to experience the work they are capable of.
Photo 1: Shows the strengths class 11 is capable of. Photo 2: Identification in the Sand dunes
Class 8 are working hard in the Physics Main Lesson with Jenny and Class 11 and 12 are combined
in a Projective Geometry Main Lesson with Mark. I went up at the beginning of break on
Wednesday to speak to one of the students, to find them still hard at work 10 minutes into the Main
Lesson.
Class 10 are working hard on their Shakespearean production of Macbeth with Lindsey Gallon.
They will be performing their play on Wednesday and Thursday nights 7pm, during the last week of
term. There will also be a matinee performance on the Wednesday and possibly Thursday.
Mercedes has been working hard to do all the paper work for our CRICOS registration so that we
will be able to begin our Exchange program with overseas Steiner/Waldorf schools next year.
I am pleased to announce that Nicole Tribolet will be teaching German lessons in Classes 8-11 next
term.
More next week …

ADMINISTRATION NEWS
Bus Service for last week of term
This term our school finishes on Friday 23 September which is one week later than the state schools
and therefore the usual school bus service is not provided by Brisbane Bus Lines. To manage this
we have chartered a bus for the week to minimise the disruption to students who usually travel by
bus to and from school. For the last week of term (19-23 Sept) the chartered bus will travel as
follows:
Morning run - depart Ferny Grove station at 7.55am and travel to school, via Camp
Mountain Road.
Afternoon run - depart school at 2.50pm; stop at Samford State School, and then travel
direct to Ferny Grove station.
As Friday 23 September is a half day, the bus will depart the school at 12.45pm.
Students will still need to pay their usual fare, which will be collected by the staff member on bus
duty in the afternoon. Correct money must be provided, please.

Continued enrolment in 2012
Our Pre-Prep enrolments for 2012 have now been finalised. We will be conducting interviews for
2012 in Term 4 for the remainder of the school.
Please be reminded that if your child/children is/are not returning in 2012 we need to be informed
in writing before the start of Term 4. A confirmation will be sent so please follow up if you do not
receive a confirmation within 7 days. As per the current fee schedule – ‗One term‟s notice in
writing is required advising the withdrawal of a student from the school, otherwise one term‟s fees
(including tuition fees and compulsory levies) will be charged in lieu of such notice.‟
Thank you

CLASS 7 NEWS
"Why have you put a horse in the middle of the painting, while Saint Paul lies on his back on the
ground?" asked an exasperated official of the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome.
"Because!" replied Caravaggio.
"Is the horse God?" asked the furious official.
"No, but he stands in God's light."
Caravaggio was a radical artist. He shook the established conventions of Mannerist painting in
Rome, he was controversial; he was challenging. He was a street brawler [we discussed the
similarities to the Capulet-Montagues street brawls in 'Romeo and Juliet', "Do you bite your thumb
at me, sir?"] Above and beyond all, Caravaggio was a brilliant Renaissance artist. We are exploring
his biography in our current Main Lesson. Each student has also drawn the name of a famous
Renaissance artist from a straw hat and will complete a project on the biography and art work of
their particular artist.
There are a lot of white footprints on the brick path at the end of the Class 6 & 7 building near the
sculpture garden. These prints are the result of Class 7 applying a significant amount of lime plaster
to the wall in preparation for a fresco painting that follows the principles of fresco painting from the
Renaissance [the way Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel - directly into wet plaster]. We
realise that we will not be able to achieve the heights of that great man but at least we will be able
to engage in a similar experience to him. This work with calcium carbonate also relates to and
follows up our experiments with the burning of limestone with Mark and Peter in the High School
during our 'Combustion' Main Lesson, last term.
This term we have also been working extensively with Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' as literature, as
the basis for our Drama lessons and for speech development each morning. We intend to perform
this play in the last week of fourth term and the preparation this term allows us to live into the play
with greater depth. 'The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance.' says Prospero As this is the
central theme of the play, we have been discussing the implications of 'revenge' versus 'forgiveness.'
Class 7 can typically be an argumentative lot now that they are starting to think for themselves,
so to channel this into a constructive vein we have been conducting a weekly formal debate with
two groups of three each week taking either the affirmative or negative stance for such topics as:
'Pocket money should be earned', 'Sport is overrated', 'Stronger discipline is needed in schools',
'Television is better than books', 'That today's children are spoilt', 'That everyone should play a
musical instrument'. Everyone in the class has participated in at least one debate and we have seen a
range of contributions from sheepish, poorly prepared pieces to some budding barristers who could
almost be called to the bar now, they have been so convincing. It has been a great exercise which
the class has engaged in enthusiastically overall.
In the next couple of weeks we will be working with Chris Jack on our dance for the Spring
Festival; basketball practice so as to give the teachers a run for their money in the annual game and
our continued engagement with the fresco painting project.

A Passionate Schooling
Now available from the Bookshop or the website on www.passionateschooling.com – previous items
may be found on the school website in earlier newsletters.
We continue our exploration of Goodness Beauty and Truth.
Steiner stressed that ‘in as much as we devote ourselves inwardly to truth, our true self gains in
strength and will enable us to cast off self interest ...truth strengthens us.‘ Further he observed
that when we experience the truth, we also experience a ‘spiritual sense of being‗, our ‗true‘ or
‗real self‘. He described how we sense this self through our consciousness of our physical body.
It seems paradoxical that we should sense our spirit, our most intangible aspect of self, through
our physical body, that part of ourselves which is most tangible and also carries our genetic
inheritance. Yet in our physical bodies we are most unique and most obviously separate from
others. The young child first identifies a sense of separate self through their growing
consciousness that their physical body is separate from all others. At the same time as this
realisation occurs often the established use of the word ‗I‘ also occurs (often at around two and a
half years). As we have seen earlier, this sense of self gradually becomes more subtly connected
with other aspects of ourselves. Steiner also suggested that through the truth we also sense the
connection between the physical body and pre-earthly existence.
He emphasized:
‗The essential thing, however, is that [man] shall be able to realize his existence inwardly,
apart from all externalities...We must be aware of our connection with the spiritual
world....Nothing establishes man‘s true and original sense of existence so firmly as a
feeling for truth and truthfulness....To be aware of the spirit within the physical body—with
this indeed, the sense of being is connected. There is, in effect, an intimate kinship between
the physical body and this ideal of Truth.‘
He provided profound insight into the connection between truth and self and what happens when
this connection is weakened. He pointed out that untruth severs our connection with both our
sense of the ‗real self‘ and pre-earthly life. This severance works right down into our physical
body, and especially into the constitution of the nervous system. Further, he said that if this
severance occurs ‗man must create a substitute for his healthy sense of being—and he does so,
unconsciously. He is then led, unconsciously, to ascribe to himself a sense of being [exceptional
or] ―out of the common‖ . In other words, if we lose touch with our ‗real self‘, we must create a
sense of self by other means. For example we may need to find personal recognition in outer
labels of an occupation or title............to be continued
