Information Sheet: Application for a Non-resident Temporary Borrowing
Licence for Non-restricted Firearms

Before you start…
Use this form to apply for a Non-resident Temporary
Borrowing Licence for Non-restricted Firearms. This licence
allows you to borrow non-restricted firearms while in Canada
for a period of 60 days. You must be 18 years of age or over.
To be eligible for a licence, you must have a sponsor. Your
sponsor must be one of the following:
an outfitter or other person authorized under the laws of a
province or territory to provide services involving organized
hunting in Canada;
a Canadian resident licensed to possess a firearm and to
hunt;
a person or organization sponsoring a shooting
competition;
an officer of an approved shooting club or shooting range;
a person or organization sponsoring a parade, pageant,
historical re-enactment or display;
a person or organization that has an interest in a business
or scientific activity in a remote area in which firearms
might reasonably be needed for the control of predators;
a person or organization responsible for the use of firearms
in movies, television, videos, theatre or publishing in which
participants might reasonably need to borrow firearms.
You may apply for a licence yourself or your sponsor may
apply on your behalf. In either case, your sponsor is required
to sign the declaration in Section F - Sponsor Declaration of
this form.

form and will help you answer some of the questions. You
should read the instructions as you fill in your form. If you

A - Personal information

You are required to provide information on two types of official
identification. These must be official pieces of identification
issued by a federal, provincial, state, regional or city
government.
Examples of types of identification you may use to prove your
identity:
Passport
Driver's licence
Birth certificate
Citizenship certificate
Landed-immigrant document
Print the type of identification used to prove your identity, the
number of that piece of identification and the name of the
province, state, region or city that issued the identification.
B - Location and Purpose Information
Box 9 b)
Print the date you want your 60-day licence period to begin.

You must be planning to use the firearm exclusively for a
purpose listed in box 9 e).

For each purpose you select, provide the following
details:
9 e) (i)
Provide the name of the outfitter with whom you will
be hunting. The outfitter must be authorized under
the laws of a province or territory to provide services
involving organized hunting in Canada.
9 e) (ii) The Canadian resident must have a valid firearms
licence and a valid hunting licence. Print the
resident's hunting licence number and firearms
licence number in Box 10.
9 e) (iii) Print the name and address of the shooting range at
which you will be competing.
9 e) (iv) Print the name and address of the range / location at
which you will be target practising.
9 e) (v) Print the name and location of the parade, pageant or
historical re-enactment or display. It must be one for
which firearms might reasonably be needed.
9 e) (vi) Print the name of the area in which you will be
conducting the business or scientific activity. It must
be one in which firearms might reasonably be needed
for the control of predators.
9 e) (vii) Provide information about the activity. The movie,
theatre or publishing activity must be one for which
firearms might reasonably be needed.
Firearm Definitions
A non-restricted firearm is:
an ordinary rifle, shotgun or combination gun that is not
described below as being restricted or prohibited.
A restricted firearm is:
a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm;
a semi-automatic, centre-fire rifle or shotgun with a barrel
length less than 470 mm (18.5 inches) that is not prohibited;
a rifle or shotgun that can fire when its overall length is
reduced by folding, telescoping or some other means to less
than 660 mm (26 inches);
any firearm prescribed as restricted (including some long
guns).
A prohibited firearm is:
a handgun with a barrel length of 105 mm (4.1 inches) or
less;
a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 25 or 32 calibre
ammunition;
a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make it less than
660 mm (26 inches) in overall length;
a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make the barrel
length less than 457 mm (18 inches) where the overall
firearm length is 660 mm (26 inches) or more;
an automatic firearm and a converted automatic firearm;
any firearm prescribed as prohibited.
D - Fees
There is a fee of $30 for the Non-resident Temporary
Borrowing Licence for Non-restricted Firearms.
Checklist
The fee is non-refundable.
Indicate the method of payment. Do not send cash. If you are
paying by cheque or money order, please make your fee
payable to the Receiver General for Canada. Your fee must be
payable in Canadian dollars and cheques must be drawn on a
Canadian banking establishment.
