Brillion Elementary School Neither Snow Nor Cold Can Keep “Donuts From Dads!” On Wednesday, January 27th Brillion Elementary hosted its second "Donuts With Dad" literacy event after a cancellation the morning prior due to a “late start”. No fear! Donuts had the power to pack the commons with dads, grandpas, uncles and special guys! The event was organized to bring "dads" into the school and offer them a few words on how they can support their readers at home. Afterwards "dads" got the opportunity to listen to and read to their child(ren). Donut holes, juice and coffee were shared. A big thank you goes out to our contributors: Brillion PTO, McDonald’s and Econo Foods! Helpful hints were offered to enforce the message of how "dads" can play a critical role in their child's reading development. Five skills children need as readers were shared: spoken words, written words, word power, reading smoothly and 2 easily, and knowing what it all means. Particular attention had been drawn to “what it all means” or comprehension. Dads can help by asking questions. Why did the character do that? What do you think will happen next? What would you do in that situation? Don’t just ask questions about books – do it about everything you see and do with your child-from what’s for dinner to what the coach should do on the next play. "Donuts With Dad" brings home the message that "dads" are needed to reinforce good reading habits and that knowledge, and literacy is valuable, achievable, and powerful! Brillion Elementary School Chrome Books Track Student Progress in Music Here in Brillion Elementary General Music, we have been working very hard at learning the pitches on the staff. This skill helps us to be able to read music- if we can read it, then we can play it on an instrument or sing it! This year, we have introduced the use of Chrome books in music to help track student progress. The students have a variety of activities to choose to participate in to increase their fluency, and then use their Chrome books to assess themselves. After each assessment, they record their score on their own data form. They also record their high score on a chart in the hallway. So far, the students are making huge gains and staying very motivated to reach the grade level target. "I love using our chrome books to see how we are improving on note names! I have improved a lot since we began. I went from a 210 to a 340! We have learned really fun activities to memorize note names, like spelling words out of notes. With getting scores we also track them on a chart in the hallway. You can see all the different scores and compare your scores to others. In fifth grade, we also like to help each other, being math or literacy, and music is no exception. Ms.Rice gave us the chance to work with partners to help each other with naming notes, which was super fun. Over all, I love the whole experience in Music!" -Madylin Gulley Team 5We hope to be able to continue our use of technology in the classroom. When students use technology as a tool for self-tracking, practice, and learning, it can be a very powerful tool in the 21st century classroom. Rebecca Rice, Elementary Music Teacher Madylin Gulley Polar Bear Plunge On Jan 22, 2016, Brillion Elementary School students from Ms. Thomasen, Mrs. Eichmeier, Mrs. Saubert, Ms. VanderHeiden, and Mrs. Milledge’s classrooms all worked together and sold popcorn to raise funds for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge participants from Brillion High School Club Unify. The popcorn project supports the functional math and real life problem solving skills for students. Together we raised $316.40 for BHS Club Unify Polar Bear Plunge team and Special Olympics!! Club Unify’s brave team will be jumping into the icy waters on February 20th, at Menominee Park in Oshkosh. If you would like to contribute to the Polar Bear Plunge Team or Special Olympics, Please contact, Mr. O'Fallon, Club Unify Brillion High School Advisor, 920-524-9182 3 Brillion Middle School E! K A U Q EARTH Learners in sixth grade are finding out that earthquakes don’t actually harm people, it’s the structures around them that do the harm. While doing research on the causes and effects of earthquakes, students are applying their newly attained knowledge to design a scale model of an earthquake proof structure. Their group research leads them to ideas they can incorporate in their building. To accomplish their goal, students are guided through the engineering design process, the process that is used in STEM classes throughout their school career. They first start by researching what has been done to create existing earthquake proof structures. After doing this, they imagine possible design solutions by applying their research. When they have finished the “imagination phase”, they then create a blueprint of what their structure will eventually become. This drawing helps them determine what materials they should use and how much of those materials to 4 purchase. They will eventually create a scale model (with the use of materials such as paper, tape, spaghetti noodles, straws, and mini-marshmallows). These models will be put through testing so the students can see if their research and effort has paid off. To purchase the materials, students must earn money by complete tasks relating to other core subjects. Examples of these tasks are to find the central idea in a non-fiction text or find surface area of their buildings. This money will then be used to purchase building materials. Money is also earned by being productive groups, showing respect and responsibility, or by being on task and on time. This project not only teaches the necessary content to our learners, but it also engages students by applying concepts to create a design solution. Students have been doing a wonderful job working in groups helping their peers to become thinkers and problem solvers. Brillion Middle School STEM Project Science • Technology • Engineering • Math The seventh grade students are “hacking away” on their mini golf course projects. On March 15th, in the middle school gym, the finished products will be ready, and open for play. Please come and join the fun! 5 Brillion MIDDLE School Middle School Students Perform “Rapaunzel” Thirty Brillion Middle School students were involved in the play this year. They presented a slightly fractured version of the traditional fairy tale, "Rapunzel". Students memorized about 50 minutes worth of dialogue and action for this production and the performances were very well received by the audiences. Featured lead roles included Cailin Schwalbach as Rapunzel, 6 Boden Brooks and Chloe VandeHey as King and Queen Furaday, Tomas Sommerhalder and Angelina Enneper as Walt and Rene Schwatzbuckle (Rapunzel's parents), and Madeline Cooney as Witch Izwitch. The play was directed by Kevin Hussey. Brillion MIDDLE School Making a Connection Mr. Schwantes’s seventh grade science students “make connections”, as they share their circuit projects with Brillion Elementary first graders. 15 Brillion Thanks for your participation! 9 Brillion HIGH School Brillion Senior Travels to Haiti For the second year Brillion senior, Kiana Gasch has traveled to Haiti. “I travel with a group from Pens for Hens and our goal is to provide Haitians with a chicken pen, feed, three laying hens and some education on chicken care” says Kiana. “I traveled during finals week. It was a lot of work to have all my finals completed a week early but the teachers were very understanding.” Pens for Hens is a non-profit started by Kiana and her father Gordie Gasch, a former Ag teacher at Brillion High School. Kiana spent eight days in Haiti. One day was spent visiting with families who got pens last year. Then for four days the group conducted four to five hour seminars where Haitians learned about raising hens in a pen and built their pens. At the end of the day the Haitians took their pens, feed and hens home. some walked and some loaded everything on the back of a motorbike. “It was just great to see the happiness and hope on their faces. These people are so poor it makes you wonder how they do it. 10 But they are happy and good natured. It feels good to be doing something that will make their lives healthier. I especially love the Haitian children. We would have all the kids in the neighborhood helping us put the pens together.” commented Kiana. Kiana also wrote about her Haitian experience for the World Food Prize. This past fall she attended a conference in Des Moines, Iowa as the first Borlaug Scholar from Wisconsin. This has been a real ‘Brillion’ project. Most of the money raised for the project came from donations and rummage sales at local churches. Both Peace United Church of Christ of Brillion and Zion United Methodist in Forest Junction participated in raising money. Next year Kiana is headed to UW Milwaukee to study Nursing. She says “this Haiti experience has really opened my eyes to the world needs for proper nutrition and health care. I plan to keep doing these trips.” Brillion HIGH School BHS Drama Club Announces the Backstage Farce, Moon Over Buffalo Moon Over Buffalo is the story of an acting couple on tour in Buffalo in 1953 with a repertory consisting of Cyrano de Bergerac (revised one-nostril version) and Noël Coward’s Private Lives. This backstage farce, by the author of Lend Me a Tenor, brought Carol Burnett back to Broadway and also starred Philip Bosco as her megalomaniac, often drunk husband and leading man. Fate has given these thespians one more shot at starring roles in The Scarlet Pimpernel epic and director Frank Capra himself is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance. If comedies and farces are your favorite choice of theatre, then Moon Over Buffalo, is sure to please. Foundations of Science Freshmen in Foundations of Science working on a STEM project. The project brought together the study of the solar system with designing and fabricating an electrical system that would light up and teach about 2 constellations in our night sky. If you're an actor or a wanna-be actor, then you'll love it even more. It's one of those plays that shows the scenes behind the onstage scenes. In Moon Over Buffalo, there are really three plays intertwined with each other. And, being a farce, you have all the craziness that includes five doors opening and closing, people hiding in closets, half-dressed actors, near misses in running into people who are hiding, mistaken identities and mass confusion. Timing is everything...and as the show goes on the timing gets better and better… Shows are slated to run on March 10, 11, 12 at 7pm and March 13 at 2pm. Tickets can be reserved starting on February 7th. Go to www. brillion.k12.wi -click on the Endries Performing Arts Center icon and order your tickets online. To order by phone, call: 1-866-967-8167. Harbor House is a domestic abuse center that provides housing and offers assistance to survivors of domestic violence. The Sting Cancer group donated a few of the fleece blankets they had tied. Courtney Schwalbach, Morganne Sendek, and Jacob Dahl plan to deliver these to Harbor House and also tour the facility. We held the fundraiser for one week after Christmas break. We are so thankful to the people who brought things for the fundraiser. Many adults--teachers, aides, and janitorial staff--got involved, as well as several of the students. The NHS is also planning a fundraiser to raise money, hopefully getting more of the students involved. The money could be used for gift cards such as gas cards and grocery cards that Harbor House can use to help the people who come to them. 12 Brillion Public Schools 315 South Main Street Brillion, WI 54110 ImPortant DateS Mark on Your Calendar February PHONE NUMBERS Elementary School Office . . . . 756-3624 Middle School Office . . . . . . . . 756-2166 High School Office . . . . . . . . . . 756-9238 District Office . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 756-2368 The school’s website contains information such as: Bus routes • School Calendar of Events Sport Schedules • Free & Reduced Lunch Forms Lunch Menus • Employment Information Open Enrollment Information & Forms Staff & contact information Board of Education Information Board of Education Policies This only names a few of the items on the website! www.brillion.k12.wi.us 19 No School 22No School/PK-12 Parent/ Teacher Conferences 12:30-8:00pm March May June 4 18 25 28 29 End of Elementary Trimester End of Third Quarter No School –Spring Break No School –Spring Break No School—Spring Break 18 11:30 Dismissal 27Graduation 30 No School/Memorial Day 2 6-24 Last day of School Summer School
