We were founded in an unlikely partnership of divergent groups with shared interests, and that spirit of combining efforts remains a principle of ours today. In 1982, a joint effort of MLGW and MIFA brought about the Plus-1 program, which has provided utility assistance for thousands of families in its first 30 years. You can read more about this vital program on the following pages, and find out more about the Grizzlies game on February 29 that will benefit Plus-1. In 2009, MIFA began serving as the central intake location for the Memphis and Shelby County Emergency Housing Partnership, which has proven successful in helping individuals and families avoid homelessness and find suitable housing. In its first two years, the program has assisted 3,934 families. A recently released report available on our website details the program’s successes. Our COOL program, which was highlighted last month in The Commercial Appeal, relies on collaborations with everyone from the Memphis Grizzlies to ServiceMaster to the students’ individual high schools and prospective colleges. This year, the finalists in our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Teen Oratorical Contest will present their speeches at the National Civil Rights Museum to a panel of judges from across the community. These collaborations and many others are the reason MIFA and its programs continue to thrive. We are proud to work with so many organizations and individuals who share MIFA’s commitment to our community. Sincerely, Executive Director Sally Jones Heinz Hope in Action staff Ellen Whitten, Editor [email protected] (901) 529-4507 Jessica Jones, Designer James Seacat, Communications Director 2 • Spring 2012 • HOPE IN ACTION Sally Jones Heinz Executive Director The FY2011 MIFA annual report is now available online at mifa.org/financials. Our mission: MIFA engages the community to sustain the independence of seniors, transform the lives of families in crisis, and equip teens for success. Our vision: MIFA works to unite our diverse community to address the challenges of poverty. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 The power of one Plus-1 helps keep the lights on for many in need “The face of our average client has changed,” says Phyllis Phillips, director of MIFA’s Emergency Services program. “Our clients used to be mostly single mothers, but now we see everybody—seniors, single fathers, people without children, two-parent households, grandparents with guardianship—the changes in our economy have touched everybody.” This population may be changing, but the challenges that bring them to MIFA are the same: for whatever reason, and due to whatever misfortune, they can’t quite make ends meet. As the damage to our economy continued and jobless rates in Memphis hovered around 10% for many months, more and more people became unemployed or underemployed. Some have been laid off and haven’t found new jobs yet. Others are temporary employees but without benefits like health insurance and medical leave. Others still are the sole breadwinners for their families, including children, parents, and other relatives. But bills don’t stop coming just because someone is out of work—these people must continue paying their rent and utility bills, or they’ll end up in even more dire straits. Take, for example, a woman who recently came to MIFA for assistance with her utility bill. During her second battle with breast cancer, she exhausted her medical leave and benefits and was left with no money to cover her costs of living. In addition to preventing her utility cutoff with Plus-1 funds, MIFA staff referred to her the American Cancer Society, which agreed to pay one month of her mortgage. Phyllis Phillips, director of MIFA’s Emergency Services program, says the face of the average client has changed. Single mothers used to be the norm, but now everyone needs assistance. mifa.org •• (901) (901) 527-0208 527-0208 mifa.org HOPE IN ACTION • Spring 2012 • 3 When people come to MIFA for utility assistance, they don’t always know the name of the Plus-1 program or exactly how it works, but they know we’re here to help. Established in 1982, Plus-1 is a partnership between MIFA and Memphis Light, Gas & Water that provides utility assistance to eligible individuals and families in financial crisis. MIFA screens clients for eligibility and priority and authorizes payments from the Plus-1 fund to their accounts. Clients are eligible for assistance once every two years. Plus-1 funds come from one-time and monthly contributions from MLGW customers. The average eligible household receives $200 in assistance, plus negotiation with MLGW to establish a payment plan for the balance. In fiscal year 2012, requests for utility assistance increased 19% over the previous year, and the 9,000 MLGW customers who currently give to Plus-1 helped keep up with that demand. Those 9,000 customers—or roughly 2% of the total population MLGW serves—contributed enough last year to help about 1,700 families. If every MLGW customer gave just $1 a month, we could serve more than 20,000 families per year. And individuals aren’t the only ones who contribute—businesses and congregations are regular givers as well. Balmoral Presbyterian Church started collecting for Plus-1 during the holidays last year. In place of their usual poinsettia decorations in the church, they decorated their Christmas tree with lights to track the amount they had collected. They gave more than $1,150. Plus-1 helps parents like Joy (pictured with her children, Heaven and Albert) when they are forced to seek assistance in times of financial crisis. 4 • Spring 2012 • HOPE IN ACTION mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 LAST YEAR WHAT IF If you already give to Plus-1, on behalf of all those your donations serve, thank you. I’ve been very pleased with what goes on at MIFA—it seems like what we need to do for people who need help.” Having no children and an interest in the fate of their finances, Elizabeth and her husband John set up a charitable trust to benefit MIFA and a handful of other selected charities. “We wanted to be deliberate about first supporting our family and then supporting our community,” Elizabeth recalls. “We wanted to designate where our money was to go and how we were to spend it while we were living.” When John died in 1995, Elizabeth found comfort in the fact that those decisions had been made years earlier. The Caldwells’ 26 years of sustaining support allow MIFA to continue providing critical assistance in this community. Investment decisions like theirs—whether through charitable trusts or another estate planning method—secure donors’ finances as well as the future of our organization. “A lot of people don’t realize all that you all do,” Elizabeth says. “MIFA is important to the city and to people, and I have always been pleased to be a part of it.” Elizabeth Caldwell and her husband John included MIFA in their estate plans. “We wanted to be deliberate about first supporting our family and then supporting our community,” Elizabeth recalls. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Spring 2012 • 7 Inter-faith Handyman project a success The Inter-faith Handyman program was created to advance MIFA’s interfaith initiative by bringing youth and adults of different faiths together on a series of projects that serve the community. The program’s inaugural event on November 19, 2011, attracted more than 90 volunteers, exceeding all expectations. Volunteers included inter-faith students from Rhodes College who are participating in President Obama’s White House Community Service Campus Challenge, led by Chaplain Walt Tennyson. They were joined by youth and adults from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, youth from St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, families from the Memphis Islamic Center, and members of Christ City Church, among others. The goal of the project was to transform a neighborhood with several vacant houses by decoratively boarding up those structures. This activity discourages vandalism, squatting, and crime, and preserves the vacant houses until they become homes again. The group also cleaned up yards and offered to rake leaves for neighbors, some of whom offered bottled water, watched the progress, and joined in the work. And several weeks after the project was completed, a neighbor reported that none of the properties had since been vandalized. The next inter-faith Handyman project will be held on Saturday, March 24. If your congregation is interested in participating, contact Linda Marks at (901) 527-0208 x218 or [email protected]. Students from Rhodes College, along with youth and adult volunteers from congregations across the city, participated in MIFA’s recent interfaith Handyman project. 8 • Spring 2012 • HOPE IN ACTION mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 Days of Hope The following individuals have given a Day of Hope at MIFA with an annual gift of $5000 or more in FY12.
