Grammar Review:
A sentence is a word or word group that
contains a subject and a verb and that
expresses a complete thought.
A sentence run-on is when two
complete sentences are smushed
together into one sentence. Two
sentences can be combined only
when there is a conjunction (and, but,
or, because...) OR a semicolon (;).
Context Clues - Hints in the text that help us understand what a word means.
Character Traits - Adjectives we can use to describe characters.
Foreshadowing - Specific clues about what will happen later; they usually cause
suspense.
Flashback- A brief look into the past.
Motive - Why someone does something
Theme - The main message/lesson.
Textual Evidence - quotations or paraphrases that come directly from the text.
Procedure:
1. Complete the left-hand column in order to review sentence fragments.
2. Complete the right-hand column to answer questions about our novel, The Giver.
3. Complete the activity on the back.
Write whether the sentence is a run-on (RO)
or a complete sentence (CS).
1. _____The best thing about weekends is that they are so
relaxing.
2. _____First of all, I can sleep in sometimes I sleep until
noon.
3. _____Second, I can see friends that I usually do not see
all week, and we have a lot of fun together.
4. _____Third, I get to spend time with family, that is the
best part.
5. _____Overall, I love the weekend.
Fix the above paragraph by rewriting the
run-on sentences into one or two complete
sentences.

find difficult or did you not like? What ideas did you consider while you were reading? What questions do
