TOPICS OF THE MONTH A Primer for Positive Playing and Practice What is the difference between “in-season” and “out-of-season”? In Season During the Academic Year • Time between the team’s first officially recognized practice session and the last practice session of competition • 20 Hours a week; 4 hours per day; 1 day off per week Out of Season During the Academic Year • The remaining days during the academic year not included in the in-season period. • Eight Hours per week; no more than 2 hours of skill instruction; 2 days off per week Permissible Activities During the Out-ofSeason Period Non-permissible Activities During the Outof-Season Period Required weight training and conditioning activities supervised by an athletics department staff member Conditioning drills may not simulate offensive or defensive alignments. In sports other than football… Prior to September 15 AND after April 15 No equipment related to the sport may be used during conditioning activities. **** No more than FOUR (4) student-athletes may participate in skill instruction with the coaching staff at one time. **** Exception**** In swimming, a student-athlete may be involved in in-pool conditioning with swim-specific equipment (e.g., starting blocks, kickboards, pull buoys). In baseball, for institution’s starting prior to January 15, and if out of season after April 15, skill instruction is limited to four student-athletes at any one time in any facility. No participation in any other countable athletically related activity that may have been permissible during the inseason period. Any voluntary athletically related activity in which the student-athlete chooses to participate All athletically related activities are prohibited one week prior to the beginning of the institution’s final exam period through the conclusion of each student-athlete’s final exams. In football, participation in up to two hours per week of watching and reviewing films. No required participation during any institutional vacation period. What is a “voluntary” activity? To be considered a “voluntary” activity, all the following conditions must be met: • The student-athlete must not be required to report back to a coach or other staff member • Non-coaching athletics staff members may not report back to the student-athlete’s coach • Coaches may never observe voluntary activities • The activity must be initiated and requested solely by the student-athlete • The student-athlete’s attendance and participation may not be recorded for the purposes of reporting • The student-athlete may not be subjected to penalty for not participating in the activity • No athletics department staff member may provide incentives/awards for participation What is the safety exception? In Gymnastics, Rowing, Swimming and Diving, Track and Field: (Field events, jumping hurdles, jumping element of the steeplechase and Wrestling, a coach may be present during voluntary individual workouts to provide safety or skill instruction but may not conduct the individual’s workouts. “A pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood.” - George Patton NCAA RECRUITING CALENDAR FOOTBALL: September 1-30 Evaluation MEN’S BASKETBALL: September 1-8 Quiet September 9-30 Contact BASEBALL: September 1-8 Quiet September 9-30 Contact WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: September 1-15 Quiet September 16-30Contact ALL OTHER SPORTS September 1-30 Contact The NLI signing period for 2010-2011 officially ended Aug 1, 2011. COMPLIANCE BRIEFS Definitions Recruiting Periods (Bylaw 13.02.5) Contact Period. • A contact period is a period of time when it is permis- sible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations Evaluation Period. • An evaluation period is a period of time when it is per- missible for authorized athletics department staff mem- bers to be involved in off-campus activities designed to assess the academic qualifications and playing ability or prospective student-athletes • No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall be made with the prospective student-athlete during an evalua- tion period Quiet Period. • A quiet period is a period of time when it is permisible to make in-person recruiting contacts ONLY on the in- stitution’s campus • No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period Dead Period. • A dead period is a period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the institution’s campus or to permit official or unoffi- cial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus • During the dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker, attend a meeting or banquet at which prospective student-athletes are in attendance and may not visit a prospective student-athlete’s institution • It remains permissible however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone a prospective student-athlete FROM THE F.A.R. SIDE- LIZ BROUGHTON ACADEMIC UPDATE Now that academic meetings and study table are underway, we ask that you encourage your student-athletes to attend all of their meetings on time with work to do. Also, we ask that you occasionally visit evening study table to check on your team. If study table issues are reported to you, we appreciate your swift action. The library is kind enough to share their space and we must respect their rules.
