PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
This is the study of our country’s transition from colonial dependence to internal self
government.
I have tried to relate the major milestones along freedom’s road to my personal experiences in various movements. The personalities involved are, therefore, real; the dialogues, authentic; and the documentation valid. In short, it’s a true story.
When World War 11 ended, The Bahamas Government faced many problems. Black
men were no longer contented with second class citizenship. They wanted good jobs and better
education for their children.
These aspirations of The Bahamian masses led to the formation of various civic, political and fraternal organizations which took up the fight for a higher economic standard of living
and greater social justice. Our history books have paid little or no attention to what these organizations accomplished and to the men and women who led them. Hopefully, this effort will
reverse the trend.
I am grateful, beyond measure, to the Nassau Guardian (1844) Ltd., for printing my
manuscript; to the Tribune for the loan of a photograph or two; and to students and teachers
who encouraged me even with their letters to finish this task. My family, of course must receive the lion’s share of my gratitude for granting me the time to write this book. They realized,
only too well, that once I had found my people, I could have no peace of mind until I had become a part of their struggle and transmitted their heritage to future generations.
About 399 B.C., Socrates in his search for moral truth founded his school of philosophy.
When a Court of Athens condemned him to death by poison because of his opinions, he said, “I
would rather die having spoken after my manner than to speak in your manner and live. The
difficulty, my friends is not to avoid death, but to be sincere.”
MORAL OF THE WORK
