January 2017
Jack’s Helping Hand was created to carry on the memory of one small boy, Jack Ready, who won the hearts of our
community during his three-year struggle with a rare form of brain cancer. His parents, Paul and Bridget Ready,
recognized the need in our community for an organization to help children with disabilities and their families obtain the
special services and satisfy special needs that were not being met by other agencies.
Jack’s Helping Hand also fulfills requests for assistance with equipment, special items, transportation and lodging for out
of town appointments with pediatric specialists, and help with medical bills when there are no other sources to cover these
needs. No outright monetary donations to individuals are made; items are purchased and then donated or transportation is
arranged for the applicant.
Approximately 30 acres of land in Nipomo was generously donated to the County of San Luis Obispo by the Nick
Tompkins family in order to establish a park in memory of Jack. The Jack Ready Imagination Park will be a place that
will allow children with disabilities to play independently with their peers while also providing a fun and relaxing
experience for the entire family. Current plans for the park include an accessible playground, a therapeutic riding facility,
basketball courts, playing fields, accessible hiking trails, bridal paths, as well as picnic areas. The Jack Ready
Imagination Park will be the only universally accessible park between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Our Ground
Breaking took place April 4, 2014. Since then, a groundwater well has been installed, the park has been graded and we
just completed the concrete pathways and paved parking lots. We expect to keep the momentum going with park
improvements that the entire community will soon enjoy.
Our Little Swimmers program is still going strong after more than 5 years! The children are having a great time in the
warm water therapy pool while strengthening muscles, learning new movement patterns and becoming more independent.
With your support, our newest programs include:
 Little Riders is an adaptive horseback-riding program that is specifically designed for children with physical and
cognitive disabilities to help improve balance, strength, coordination, and increase overall function.
 A new program, called Water Warriors, is helping our older children and young adults ages 10 to 21 going
through chemotherapy, radiation and chronic pain to receive pain relief through this specialized type of therapy.
 In collaboration with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, we’ve established Jack’s Toy Box. This
program allows specialists to provide toys to children at high risk of developmental delays, hearing loss and other
disabilities that stay in the home to help the child progress developmentally.
 Last but certainly not least, Jack’s Helping Hand is also proud to sponsor “Camp Reach for the Stars”. This is a
weekend-long camp for children with cancer and their families in San Luis Obispo. Camp Reach enables children
to play and enjoy a camp experience while the parents appreciate the support it offers in the form of talking with
other parents in a similar circumstance.
We are writing this letter in support of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT). They are
hosting a week long philanthropy event called GET ON THE BALL. All proceeds from this event will benefit
