Selina, my darling. The King is very angry. You must leave the palace, but don’t
worry! I have a plan. I am going to hide you in a big candlestick. My servant is
going to take you to market and sell you there. We must be quick. Servant!
(crying) Thank you, mother.
The servant runs in.
Quick! Go with Selina and put her in the candlestick, then take her to the market.
Yes, your majesty.
And make sure you sell the candlestick to a prince.

bit of it. Mmmm!
Selina eats all the food bit by bit.
Selina
Oh no! There isn’t any more food. What’s the Prince going to say?
I must hide again quickly.
Selina hides in the candlestick again. A little later the Prince comes in.

The candlestick is on a table. Prince Flavin’s servant walks in with a plate of
food and puts it on the table, then walks out.
Tonight we’re going to find out what happens to my dinner. I’m not going out
this evening. I’m going to hide here and wait.
The Prince hides in the dining room. After a short time Selina comes out.
The Prince jumps at her from behind.
Aha! Now I’ve got you!
Help!
Oh! You’re a woman ... but what are you doing in the candlestick?
Prince Flavin, I’m sorry, but please don’t be angry with me. My name’s Princess
Selina. My mother put me in this candlestick and her servant took me to market
because my father wanted to kill me ...
Your father? The King? But why did he want to kill you? No, don’t tell me now.
Tell me later and we can make a plan. Now I have something very important to
say to you.
Yes, Prince Flavin.
I ... I am in love with you. Please will you marry me?
Oh, yes!

She can only take off her veil when we finish eating, your majesty.
Please have some food.
Thank you ... urgh! But this food is disgusting. There isn’t any salt in this food.
Food is horrible without salt! I must have some salt!
What did you say your majesty? Do you want some salt?
Yes ... oh dear ... now I understand. My poor, poor daughter. Of course she loved
me! She said I was as dear as salt. (He starts crying.) Oh dear, oh dear. I am so
sorry!
Father. Don’t cry! Here I am ... and you are still as dear as salt to me!
Selina! Please forgive me!
Selina
Yes, father, I do.

Now you know who my Princess is, let us all eat and drink together and celebrate this family wedding.

Unit 8 The solar system
Student A
The Earth is one of eight planets which circle around a central star, the Sun. The Sun and its
planets are called a solar system. The eight planets in order from the nearest to the Sun are:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
There are also three dwarf planets called Pluto, Ceres and Eris.
Some scientists think there is another planet in our solar system. They call it Planet X.
Our Sun is about 4,600,000,000 years old. It is huge and very, very hot. If you imagine
the Earth as a pea, then the Sun is a big beach ball.
Student B
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. During the day it is really hot on Mercury – it’s
350ºC, 7 times hotter than the highest temperature on Earth. And at night it’s really cold,
-170ºC. It isn’t surprising that no living things live there!
Mercury gets its name from the messenger of the Roman gods. Mercury ran very fast,
and the planet Mercury moves faster around the Sun than any of the other planets!
Venus is the brightest planet. In some months it shines in the west at sunset and is called the
Evening Star. In other months it shines in the east at sunrise and is called the Morning Star.
It’s hotter than Mercury with temperatures of 500ºC! This makes it the hottest planet.
Mars is the next planet after Earth. It is called the Red Planet because of its colour. Mars is
like Earth in some ways. It has frozen poles, snowy mountains, and volcanoes. Scientists have
looked and looked for living things on Mars, but they haven’t found anything – yet!
Student C
Jupiter is the largest of all the planets, but it spins really fast! It spins much faster than Earth.
A day on Jupiter is just 9 Earth hours and 50 minutes!
Saturn is the second biggest planet. It is ninety-five times heavier than Earth. Many people
think it is the most beautiful planet because of the dust and rocks around it that look like
rings. It has 17 moons.
People discovered the planets from Mercury to Saturn thousands of years ago. Uranus was
discovered in1781 and Neptune in1846. They are a similar size but look very different. Uranus
is blue-green and Neptune is a pretty dark blue with white clouds. One year on Uranus is
84 Earth years, yet it takes only 17 hours and 14 minutes to spin around. This means that
there are 42,000 Uranian days in a Uranian year!
