“And after you gave your
confidence to him you were,
so to speak, stamped with the
promised Holy Spirit as a
guarantee of purchase” –JB
Phillips,Ephesians 1:13.
What does it look like to be
stamped with the Holy Spirit
or marked as Christ’s own?
Each week will lift up a mark
of God’s love on us.
24 HOUR PRAYER VIGIL
MARCH 27
Living the Good News
I read a story in Sue Monk Kidd’s book, Firstlight, about a young man coming in to
visit the elderly preacher of his church. The young man had lost his job and life’s problems
were compounding. He paced back and forth in the preacher’s study, clenching his fists,
ranting, asking why God wouldn’t answer his prayers. The elderly preacher calmly and
quietly replied. The young man couldn’t hear him, so the preacher replied again in the
same manner. The young man had to stop pacing and move closer and closer to finally be
able to hear what the preacher was saying. Finally he got so close his head was next to the
preachers, and he heard him say, “God sometimes speaks in whispers, so we will move
closer to hear.” (p.166)
That story struck me as the perfect motivation to observe Lent. Lent is an
opportunity to move closer, to lean in to God, to shut out all of the other voices, and to
listen for God. Throughout scripture, God’s way is seldom of the loud, in-your-face
variety. God is more often encountered in the retreat up the mountain, the closets of
prayer, the still, small voice beckoning to us. Yet our culture is full of to-do lists, sights
and sounds, gadgets and non-stop information. Even our own minds can ramble on in
such a way that it can be difficult to be still and focus on Christ.
There are many disciplines available to utilize during the 40 days of Lent, not
counting Sundays, which is always a celebration of the resurrection. Some include coming
to church on Sunday for study and worship, taking part in the Lenten study on
Wednesdays, reading the devotional material and the Bible daily, concentrated times of
prayer with a set amount of time to simply be quiet in the presence of God. Giving up
something, to focus on what Jesus gave up for us, or following through on a tangible way
to show Christ’s love even when it requires a sacrifice on our part, are other ways to share
in the act of sacrificial giving. A choir director I used to work with gave up smoking one
year and used the money he saved to buy something the church needed as a spiritual
disciple. Also plan now to attend the Maundy Thursday worship on April 13. This service
is moving and meaningful, allowing the message of Holy Week to be felt while still
reminding us that Easter is coming.
Indeed, we are an Easter people! Let’s empty ourselves of anything that keeps us
from knowing and living that truth fully. See you on Wednesday and Sunday!
Grace and peace, Rachel

General Assembly of the Christian Church (DOC)
Be a witness for ONEness!
One of the last things Jesus did with his disciples was to bless them with the priestly
prayers that appear in John 17. He prayed that, “I’m praying not only for them, but
also for those who will believe in me because of them and their witness about me.
The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind.”
(The Message)
On July 8-12 we will gather as ONE for the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis.
Thousands of Disciples gather from across the United States and Canada to
demonstrate our unity in service to the Christ. We will hear inspiring messages, elect
a new General Minister and President, hear about the results from Mission First! and
learn together.
Bible studies on the theme text (John 17:20-21a) from scholars at Disciple-related
seminaries are available online so you can go deeper into scripture.
