THE NEWSLETTER OF CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH
AN AMERICAN BAPTIST
CHURCH OF QUINCY,
IL
What is the importance of believing that Christ is
divine? To answer that question correctly is to address
the very essence of Christianity. How do we know that
Christ is divine?
First, Jesus acknowledged it.
Secondly, His disciples confirmed it.
Still there is other evidence that points to His deity.
The apostle Paul, in Titus 2:13, calls Jesus “great God
and Savior,” and points out that prior to His incarnation
Jesus existed in the “form of God” (Philippians 2:58).
In Revelation 1:12-18, John recorded, “When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as if I were dead. But
He laid His right hand on me and Said, ‘Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. I am the
living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the
grave.’” Still other evidence is found in I Corinthians 10:9, I Peter 2:6-8, Psalm 18:2, and
Hebrews 13:20, just to name a few verses.
Furthermore, actions that can be accomplished only by God are credited to Jesus. Jesus
raised the dead (John 5:21 and 11:38-44) and forgave sins (Acts 5:31, 13:38), but He also
created and sustains the universe (John 1:2, Colossians 1:16-17).
Christ possesses attributes that only deity can possess: eternality (John 8:58); omnipresenceall present at all times (Matthew 18:20, 28:20); omniscience-all knowing (Matthew 16:21); and
omnipotence-all powerful (John 11:38-44).
If Christ is not divine, we are wasting our time, but if He is divine, and I certainly believe He is,
He has the right to have certain expectations of each of us.

CONGREGATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT
I come to you this morning asking
you to help your Moderator, our Ministry
Council, the leadership of our church, and
ourselves. We need to focus on love for
each other. God commands us to love one
another. This is a loving church, but the
devil is working to tear down what He has
built here and His plans for the future
through the work of our church body. We
have been richly blessed, but especially
during this time with no shepherd, we must
rally together to keep us focused on His
plan. We are here to “Win Quincy to Christ
by Bringing People In, Lifting People Up,
and Sending People Out in Jesus’ Name”.
We cannot get to the prize while
spreading rumors and innuendo about
fellow Christians. I’ve been approached by
multiple members regarding this activity.
The Bible outlines the process in Matthew
18 regarding the settling of conflict with a
Christian brother or sister. Verse 15 “If your
brother or sister sins, go and point out their
fault, just between the two of you”. Proverbs
15 deals with the use of our tongue. Verse
1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a
harsh word stirs up anger”. Verse 2 “The
mouth of the fool gushes folly”. We all must
watch our use of words, thinking before we
speak so as not to cause a brother or sister
to stumble. Verse 4 “A perverse tongue
crushes the spirit”. The body of believers at
Central must lift one another up and not
even inadvertently tear another down.
We have avenues of support in the
church;
1)
the
Pastoral
Relations
Committee which is an advocate for
members as well as the Pastor. 2) The
Moderator or a Council Member. As leaders
we must put down the negative, hurtful, and
damaging rumors and gossip before they
take a life of their own and spread. We
must be vigilant and council a brother or
sister to seek out the individual they have a
concern about.
I share a comment from Area
Minister Pastor John Grisham… we must
address any divisive behavior prior to
calling a new Senior Pastor. It is not fair to
our new shepherd to start with a clouded
slate.
Please pray for Central’s healing, our
leadership, and our Pulpit Search
Committee. We have a lot of work ahead of
us and Christians; we must do it together in
a positive, loving way being obedient to our
Lord and Savior.
Blessings,
Jim Fox, Moderator
FAMILY CAMP - Register for the 23nd

Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30, 2016.
CENTRAL hosts its
annual

Family Camp over
the Memorial Day
Weekend at Camp
Emmanuel
in
Astoria, Illinois. This great camping
experience is filled with fun games, skits,
paddle-boating, fishing, board games, camp

members of your church family. Family
Camp is sponsored by the Ministry of
Family Life.
Lodging consists of spaces (with
hook-ups) for campers or tents, rustic
bunkhouses & cabins (you will need to
bring your own bedding). You may like the
sound of the food, fun, and fellowship, but
not the bunkhouses and communal shower
house — well, that's OK. Join us on Sunday
~5~
(after worshiping in Quincy). Take a
pleasant drive to Astoria for the afternoon.
Fish, hike, play horseshoes, or just visit —
then join us for supper (cost: Adults$5.00/Children-$3.00) and vespers around
the campfire outdoors, (or inside the lodge
in front of the fireplace if it should rain).
can sleep up to about 8 on that side if we
bring some cots or inflatables. If we get
more than 8 then we’ll have to rent the
other side. Some folks last year could only
come for part of the time. Let me know if
that’s the case again this year.
Thanks, Franc
