completed the requirements during the second year of ACI’s Charter for
Sustainable Cleaning, a voluntary initiative
of the cleaning products industry to promote
and demonstrate continual improvement in
the industry’s sustainability profile.
“ACI’s sustainability mission is to enable
our membership to drive improvements in
sustainability across our industry and throughout our supply chain,” said Ernie Rosenberg,
ACI President & CEO. “The ACI Charter
for Sustainable Cleaning provides a framework for continual assessment, review, and
improvement in sustainability performance at
major stages of the product lifecycle.”
Companies who sign-up for the Charter
must formally commit to the ACI Principles
for Sustainability, must participate in ACI’s
Sustainability Metrics Program, and work
toward implementing a set of Essential
Sustainability Procedures and Activities
(SPAs). “These Essential Sustainability
Procedures and Activities focus on best
practices in areas such as raw material selection, resource management, product safety
and manufacturing, packaging design, occupational health and safety, and sustainability
reporting,” Rosenberg said.
The ACI Charter is based in part on the
A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning,
a voluntary initiative of the European
soaps, detergents and maintenance products industry developed by ACI’s sister
trade association, A.I.S.E.

relationship with customers who continue
to push ways to advance sustainability, performance, and overall cost reduction.
“We saw a bumpy year in 2015, and 2016
won’t be an easy year” but there is opportunity available by offering customers more
choices, says Hans Reiners, president/care
chemicals at BASF. This could mean supporting sustainability, providing a better cost
position, or enabling differentiation in the
marketplace, he adds.
Ralf Brinkmann, business president/
consumer care at Dow Chemical, says he is
cautiously optimistic that this year will more
or less track in line with 2015. “Obviously we
see a couple of headwinds from Asia, which
are concerning in terms of overall consumer
demand and spending for better products.”
Europe is impacted by concerns over Russia
and low oil. However, Dow is confident it can
weather 2016 well because it is aligned with
consumer trends. Some of the basic homecare applications may grow just 1-2% in 2016,
