EDITORIAL
It is with a certain amount of pride that we present No. 2,
M.H.J. Our first edition was put forward tentatively. We
groped hopefully to find an interested audience. The attempt
proved successful. The encouragement and friendly criticism
given us by professional historians and readers in Melbourne
and interstate were largely responsible for an improvement
in content which, we felt, deserved a printed format. Last
year it was said that our aims were `visionary but noble'. This
edition may make the vision more real.
We dedicate the present issue to Professor R. M. Crawford,
offering him the three lectures commemorating his 25th year
as Professor of History. These lectures were sponsored by the
University Historical Society and were given in May this
year. In addition we are privileged to publish articles by
Sir Keith Hancock from Canberra and Doctor L. A. Clarkson
from England, while the policy of encouraging undergraduate
contributors has been maintained.
To those members of staff who helped in selecting copy,
to this year's Historical Society for their enthusiasm, to our
printers, Brown, Prior, Anderson Pty. Ltd., and to our
readers, we give our sincerest thanks.
