Thanks to our patrolling members and under the guidance of our club and patrol captains Merewether have achieved another very successful season in not only keeping our beach safe but in also meeting our Branch and council requirements for manning and equipment whilst on patrols. The interruptions and restrictions caused by the pavilion upgrade were managed extremely well by our crews resulting in minimal impact to our patrolling performance; and credit is to be given for some of the inventive ways these issues were overcome. There were some notable rescues performed in and out of hours that earned our club commendation and a rescue of the month award and we were also tasked with a number of 1300 surf call outs keeping our teams busy. The tireless work of our Education team has resulted in Merewether being one of the front running clubs for member award achievement and the team continues to provide us with not only highly trained, keen new members but also the continual upgrading of skills of our existing members. As part of the ongoing upgrade and standardisation of equipment this season the team rolled out their new oxy and trauma/first aid packs plus we purchased 6 new rescues boards to assist in the training requirement, the benefit of all this is to achieve ease of use through commonality of emergency response equipment for all club members. Thanks to a huge effort by our “Ducks for Dollars” team and all their helpers we received over $13k in ticket sales which was a terrific result and enabled us to apply for and gain a dollar for dollar BRP grant to purchase a desperately needed replacement ATV, this machine is to be called the “duckmobile” in recognition of the public assistance and where the purchase money came from. Also through our sponsors committee we are actively chasing sponsorship for future large purchases and up and coming building works. During the season the pavilion and “Bathers Way” walkway upgrade works were completed netting us not only a totally new outlook but also a much improved area for us to operate from with the cafe patrons and public now having a designated space, this has also resulted in a less crowded and easier to manage area at the gear shed end of the club. Also with thanks to Newcastle City Council, Branch, the fantastic people of the City Serve group and club members we undertook a refurbishment of the club house which saw the premises painted inside and out over a long weekend, it was an intense time but the results were certainly worth it. All this work has given the club a much needed freshen up. Our competitors represented us well with great results from our juniors at Branch and State titles and our masters also giving a good showing at Branch, State and Nationals. Our IRB racing team is coming up to speed and are representing us in the winter months. Page | 7 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 Our function room is also being continually improved with upgrades happening to the tables and chairs during this out of season to help make us more attractive to cliental. The Sunday night “coldies” are going well and seeing improved support and patronage with the bar crew really up to speed to service our customers, along with our “Beaches” raffles crews these events are supplying us with the much needed income to keep our club afloat and thanks must go to all who contribute their time and effort to make it happen. Page | 8 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 CURRENT SPONSORSHIP Merewether Surf Life Saving Club wishes to thank their sponsors who have donated their time and services so that the club can operate in a lifesaving and education capacity for the community. This year we: Overcame the difficulties associated with setting up patrols as the Merewether precinct improvements took out a large area in front of the club Took on responsibility for patrols on Saturday’s and Public Holidays Won a State Surf Life Saving rescue of the month award for a great rescue by a number of our members Had a number of new Patrol Captains take on the role - bringing new ideas and approaches to the way we roster and carry out each patrol Continued to welcome new patrolling members - with a number of new Radio and 1st Aid award members patrolling along with new Bronzies and SRC’s At the end of the season we met with Patrol Captains – to identify improvements as well as to ascertain the level of capability on each patrol. Some of the key improvements identified were to: ensure patrols use the lifeguard hut (and lock it up when the patrol is finished) check all radios prior to patrols do an induction for new patrol members increase the number of IRB crew and drivers across patrols roster patrols in advance (AM and PM) encourage all patrol members to actively patrol at the water’s edge run through signals on all patrols Patrol Captains also assessed each patrol member’s capability to: Set up the beach i.e. get gear onto the beach, drive the ATV/trailer, set up the flags etc Use the radio to sign on/off, call in a rescue, talk to the IRB Do a board rescue in average conditions Actively patrol i.e. be on time, patrol at the water’s edge, sit at the flags Surf swim beyond the break (with a tube) by 20-30 metres Administer 1st aid i.e. handle a 1st aid incident, fill out forms etc So next year there will be a big focus on improving what we do and how we do it. Finally a big thank you goes to the Education Team for their great work in training new members, running proficiencies and organising skills upgrade courses such as ARTC, Spinal, Radio, IRB crew and IRB driver. We look forward to another great patrolling season and always welcome suggestions on what we can do to improve. Page | 10 ANNUAL REPORT Page | 11 MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 IRB REPORT By Nathan Wright, IRB Captain 2013/2014 Season was another great year of building our on crew and driver’s numbers with new drivers stepping up and fresh crew successfully completing the courses, with the introduction of bringing in any suitable new bronze course participants to include the IRB crew course our numbers and the depth and skills are coming along nicely and will continue, so as to meet our patrol requirements. With thanks to Mark Owen for his assistance in training the new drivers and crew and to Ralph Foster for assistance with repairs, maintenance and set up on numerous occasions throughout the season. We have had a very active season using and training in IRB skills that’s really showing results with the number of past and new operators showing more confidence and care for the equipment. With some increased numbers and under the guidance of our Team manager Kevin Buckley we successfully completed 3 of the 4 rounds of the IRB NSW Premiership this season. In which we had fun and built our knowledge so we are now looking forward to building on the team and committing to more training to make another go of it in the coming season and welcome anyone to come along and have a go or assist. Skills Training will be again a major focus this year adding more crew and drivers to ensure suitable coverage for patrols and water safety for events and nippers, with a number of courses being run throughout the season and I encourage anyone keen, contact me to get on the next available course. We now have a new registered trailer making training at more suitable locations when the surf is up easier. I’d like to thank Audi Newcastle Car Centre (contributions for new boat hull) and Action Plant Support (supply of fuel and oils). We have many other sponsorship opportunity’s big and small every bit helps to run, repair and replace the equipment if you or someone you know can help let us know. P a g e |1 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 EDUCATION AND TRAINING REPORT By Charlie Bugbird, Chief Instructor This season was again very successful for the Club from an Education point of view with a focus on our Club Sustainability Awards Chart being rewarded with more members upgrading their skill levels beyond the Bronze Medallion. This successful focus allowed our club to be only one of two clubs in the Hunter Branch to be compliant across all categories of the Chart. It was encouraging to see the number of members completing the Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management award that will enable them to proceed to the position of Patrol Captain, it is essential that we have more members capable of handling Patrol Captain duties on each Patrol if we are to continue with our current patrolling methodology. The grueling Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue Course was completed by eight of our members (many on the Call Out Team), also two Call Out Team members completed the challenging IRB Night Operations course held on an inhospitable night at Tea Gardens, this shows the enthusiasm our members have to tackle courses that will help the club maintain its reputation of high member competence. This Season saw a continuation of Education Team members attending patrols and delivering the latest methods of resuscitation and first aid directly to the patrol members, this attendance in each case was initiated by the Patrol Captains and in the coming season it would be encouraging for more Patrols to instigate ‘on patrol’ updates and skills maintenance. IRB crew training had been targeted for this season and one of the strategies was to include the IRB Crew training and Certificate as part of Bronze Medallion Candidate training, this proved highly successful and IRB crew training will now be an integral part of the Bronze Medallion Training for the coming season. The high number of awards gained this season reflects not only on the number of recruits to the Club but also the commitment of our patrolling members to upgrade their qualifications, these awards could not have been obtained without the dedication of Merewether SLSC’s Education Team, these members not only do their normal patrol duties but are present at week nights during courses and during the day to not only give of their time but also of their skills. This season saw five of our Education Team receive their Training Officer Bronze Medallion Award with another two with paperwork being completed, it is hoped that the next season will see more of our education crew completing this award. Thanks also need to be extended to all the Junior Age Managers who guided their charges through the various Junior awards and to the Education team members who delivered the CPR and First Aid components of the courses. It is proposed to further enhance these linkages between the Junior ranks and the Senior Club by incorporating Cadet members into the Education Team in the next Season, this will enable the Junior members to relate more easily to members closer to their own age and give the Cadets a meaningful role to play during the difficult transition period from SRC to Bronze. A thank you to the Committee of Merewether Surf lifesaving Club for their support of the Education Team and thank you also goes to the Office Staff at Hunter Branch for all the help that they have given to me throughout the season. P a g e |2 ANNUAL REPORT P a g e |3 MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 SURF SPORTS By Toni Woodcock This year’s competition season dished up some fantastic conditions across the board. With representatives from the Under 13 picked for the Interbranch Squad and Trish Stallard making the long hall to Perth Western Australia for the Aussie Championships. BEACH, SKI, SWIM & BOARD Open Competitors Sarah Bugbird and Teagan Cotterill hold the Merewether Flag high competing for the Opens on the beach. Luckily found it a week later in his jacket pocket. I received a message letting me know that the sand was that cold her feet where frozen. Extremely pleased with her result in the 2km run and only herself there I was happy to let out a squeal of joy for her in my work place…. Medals Bronze in the 2km SURF BOATS Open Competitors We saw two women Emma Gale and Toni Woodcock train a team of Open Women Surf Boat Rowers, with Emma gaining the right as the first female sweep in the Hunter Branch. They gained their coaching accreditation with persistent mentoring by the Late Mick “Whipper” Jennings (Nobbys), Ken “Screenie” Screen (Nobbys), Lindsay Milne (retired sweep from Nobbys/Newcastle), Brian “Fozzie” Foster (Newcastle), Michael Norman (MacMasters Beach) and Michael King (Newport) to name a few with many others willing to share their experience from the Streets Boat Series and Australian Surf Rowing League. Open Women Crew – Jess Coote, Cassie Screen, Hannah Archer-Lawton, Ellie Ryan, Toni Woodcock (as fill in) and Emma Gale as Sweep. Competed at selected carnivals at the Streets Boat Series, ASRL Navy Open Stockton and the State Championships. The Women made the newspaper and radio three days in a row while competing in the ASRL Navy Open at Stockton as the first Hunter Branch all women’s surf boat crew. Although the media attention was stressful, at times it really bought home the lack of training and mentoring within the Hunter for this area of surf competition. Competing in the Street Series the girls grew in confidence after each event. Giving branch a miss at Caves Beach due to heavy surf, the crew made the trip to Umina for the State Championships. Once the nerves had settled and a quick in and out before the racing began, each race their confidence grew. The Crew Ellie, Toni (OM I have not raced for so long), Hannah and Jess made it through the first three rounds just missing out by a point to go on. The goal for the P a g e |6 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 day was to beat a crew home and just by beating a crew to the cans (unfortunately squeezed out) made their day. IRB RACING Winter or the off season usually means the IRB Competition has started. Not that I would call May and the June that winterish. The Crews had great conditions to compete. Members included Nathan Wright, Mark Owen, Peta Owen, Emma Gale, Bruce Rummins, Kevin Buckley, Bridget Buckley, Darren Moses, Kieran Stevens, Alex Lautensclager, and Sarah Bugbird. Making a couple of finals, looks like next year they will be all over it and be the ones out there to beat. OFFICIALS AND WATER SAFETY The Competition Season is not only a long a gruelling affair for our competitors, it is just as demanding on our Officials and Water Safety Crews who are often on the beach and in the water before and still there after our competitors have finished. Without them, we wouldn’t have Carnivals. Thanks must go to our own team of Officials Graham Lott (now seen at the surf boat competition more and more), Kaye Lott, Toni Woodcock, Emma Gale, Peta Owen, Liza Ross, Emma Flint, Rachel Soars, David Soars and Kevin Buckley and the many members in the water - we say thank you for making it all possible. Please consider taking on a rewarding roll as an Official or Water Safety Crew to help out during Junior Life Saving, Club Carnivals, Competition Carnivals and Championships. Thanks you to everyone who helped support our competitors to get to and from training and carnivals. You too need a pat on the back for being there. NEXT SEASON Next seasons training has already started for a few in this now wintery time. Keep in touch with your Coaches and keep an eye out in the newsletters and web for any circulars that may impact your competition season. Always take a friend with you or let someone know what you are doing or expect to be back. Please never swim alone. All the best to you all. P a g e |7 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 MEMBER SERVICES (REGISTRAR) By Kevin Buckley, Registrar Thank you for the opportunity to present our final membership figures for the 2013/2014 season. Congratulations to the current committee for trying to maintain club numbers. All the construction work whilst being onerous for Patrols and Nippers has also had an effect on our numbers. This coming season as the club and surrounds are now looking better than ever should mean that numbers will increase again. It was another big year for the Club, with a huge thank-you to Kris Wall for looking after the Nippers Registrations. This year we had 634 members in the club. This was a decrease of 70 members from 704 members the previous year and 738 in year 2012, overall a retention rate from last year of 90 %. The loss in membership is most notable in the Nippers and associated parents. There is also a continued decrease in the post Nippers age group from 14 through to 18. The maintenance of members is due to the great work of Mark and the Nippers organisers being able to still conduct Nippers on a Sunday morning with the adversity of the construction. Thanks also to Charlie, Richard and their training team for the amount of new senior members trained this season, the Active senior patrolling members has actually seen a slight increase in numbers this year. We have 378 Male members and 256 female members. See the breakdown this year by membership category. As you can see the Nippers and associated parents now make up approximately 60 % of the Club. Last year we again tried to get all members to use the electronic registration and payment system via the Internet through the Surf Lifesaving –Online / Payment Gateway. We have also recommended the use of Lifesaving Online to allow you to set up and monitor your membership details and make membership applications and payment. For this season we also ask that you assist us by again using your Lifesaving online account for registration renewal and payment. If you can’t remember your account details as long as you remember the email address you used to set up your account you will be able to reconnect and use it again. We will be limiting the Face to face registration days this year and may only have one. You will need to take your Application number and proof of your identity to a NSW Motor Registry or NSW Government Access Centre. Once your application has been processed and you are cleared, you will receive your Working with Children Check number (WWC). This number must accompany your club registration. And may take up to 4 weeks to be processed. Get in early - and get it done now if you can. Around rego time it will get very busy! Follow the link: http://www.kids.nsw.gov.au/Working-with-children/New-Working-With-Children-Check/NewWorking-with-Children-Check Due to popularity we may have to close registrations for some of our Nippers age groups this season to ensure we have adequate coverage for safety. So get in early to avoid disappointment. P a g e |9 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT / NIPPERS By Mark Owen – Chairperson The Merewether SLSC Nippers program continues to evolve thanks to the support of all the age managers and assistants, volunteers, committee members, water safety, BBQ helpers, coaches & trainers, who ensure that we continue to offer the one of the best surf education and junior surf sports programs in the region. I would also like to thank and encourage all our Nippers (Junior Surf Life Savers) and parents. This year we continued the implementation of a new water safety program that involved conducting a risk assessment in conjunction with the Patrol Captain on Sunday mornings; also our water safety coordinator would continually monitor the conditions and water safety ratios to ensure the safety of all nippers during water activities. Additionally, we ensured that an IRB was in operation whenever the nippers were in the water. Water Safety improvements are a work in progress and will keep improving next season with a separate board and swim area, combined with a timetable for each age group. Thank you to all those who helped with water safety. We are always after additional water safety, so any parents of our nippers that are interested should enquire about doing their Bronze Medallion; we need a ratio of 1:5 bronze medallion holders in the water with the kids at all times. During the season we purchased an additional 2 Kracka competition boards. This was due to the increased number of competitors that have been attending carnivals throughout the season. On the competition side of nippers, this season saw an increased number of competitors compared to previous seasons. Congratulations to all the competitors who attended. This season in the Newcastle Permanent series Milly Ross was awarded Hunter Branch the Under 13 Female Water Champion and Nicola Owen 2nd in the series. Milly and Nicola also being selected for the Hunter Inter-branch team - congratulations Milly and Nicola. Thank you to all those who official and do water safety and get everything organised at carnivals for the competitors. The Christmas party was a great success, with Santa arriving in the IRB with bags of lollies for all the nippers (and parents). Our annual camp was once again a success with over 150 parents and children attending. The camp has been going for over 20 years and is a great time to meet new people and for the kids to have some fun. Thanks to Suzy Wall and all those who helped get the weekend organised. I hope this remains on the junior calendar for a very long time. I hope all the kids have enjoyed themselves and met new friends this year. Lastly I would like to thank the committee for a job well done. A very special thank you to the outgoing committee member Al Woodhams for his awesome effort. I would like welcome all the new Junior Activities Committee members and look forward to working with you all next season. Functions all runs smoothly, the bar is well set up and people are more than happy with the selection of beverages we offer. The versatility of the room along with the fantastic view and that fact that we are NOT locked into any ‘one’ caterer are all factors that contribute to the attraction of Merewether Surf Life Saving Club. Some notable room hires this year include Surfest, ongoing (and growing) yoga groups, Monash University students (who used it whilst attending the recent university games) and the retirement party of a number of club members. Members should be aware that the yoga groups often offer a discount to surf club members and the classes are fantastic. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during school holidays, Rod Fordham offers karate lessons for both juniors and seniors. Rod is not only a club member of our surf club but also is a long term hirer of our function room. Many members participate in karate and enjoy his tuition. Rod also offers a discount to surf club members. Our last regular event on the weekly calendar is of course ‘Coldies’. Coldies is a very good opportunity for cheap, social gatherings for members and their friends on Sundays from about 3pm (a little later in winter). Footy is on the screen and heaters keep you warm in winter whilst in summer the veranda offers a cool breeze with a view. New tables have been ordered which will enhance the look inside the room as our old tables are well and truly showing their age. We are also looking at options through the Sponsorship Committee, for getting new flooring to cover the vinyl tiles, some new chairs and a new kitchen! It is also worth mentioning the repaint that occurred and how that has improved the look – thanks to all who helped out. I have been trialling keeping the amenities open for members when a function is due in that night, so far, most patrols have been aware of the situation and helped in this ongoing dilemma. Unfortunately this is not always the case, so there may be times during the season where the toilets are locked to ensure our clients get a clean bathroom for their function. My thanks to Norm, Mark and Ralph who do a great job in keeping the bar ready to go. Thanks also to those who work the bar, particularly the volunteers at Coldies. P a g e | 26 ANNUAL REPORT MEREWETHER SLSC 2013/2014 We did have a minor break-in attempt to the bar a few months ago which required repair to some timber surrounds. Fortunately the perpetrators were not successful in gaining entry but it is worth mentioning that security is every club members’ responsibility. Overall the Surf club has been a very busy place over the past twelve months and I look forward to another year of taking bookings for the club. Don’t forget a discount applies to members when booking the room.
