Y Ready, Set, READ!
Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
The toy has two disks connected to an axle; a length of string loops around the
axle. Napoleon’s soldiers played with richly decorated versions of it, as Europeans
had been doing for two centuries. It was popular in the Philippines for several
centuries. And there is indisputable evidence—a picture on a bowl showing a boy
playing with one—that the ancient Greeks enjoyed it 2,500 years ago. But it might
have gotten its start even earlier than that, in China.
Although there is no easy answer to where and when the yo-yo was invented,
we do know that two people were responsible for popularizing the modern version
of it here in America. Those two were Pedro Flores and Donald Duncan.
Flores came here from the Philippines. In the 1920s, he improved the toy by
having it come to rest at the end of the string and then return upward. He began
manufacturing yo-yos and inventing tricks to do with them. Duncan witnessed Flores’s
expert play and was impressed. He bought Flores’s company. He spent a fortune to do
so, but the yo-yo booms in the 1960s and 1990s made him wealthy. It made a lot of
kids happy, too. You can learn more by visiting the Yo-Yo Museum’s website.
1.Who was Pedro Flores, and what part did he play in the history of the yo-yo?
