think about some
of our ideas!
Alexandra Palace is an old building
that sits on the hill in North London.
It was where TV was first shown to
people almost 100 years ago.
We have some ideas for new
ACTIVITIES we could do at
Alexandra Palace but we need to
know WHAT YOU THINK!
EXAMPLE:
We want to know what you think so tell us

Activity Survey Responses
Have you visited previously?
•
•
•
•
39% for 1-3 times
28% for 8+times
15% for 4-7 times
18% never
What does this mean: 43% of respondents are very active Alexandra Palace visitors, using the
building or Park between 4 to 8+ times a year. However, an almost equal amount are more
infrequent users, likely to be engaged for specific events which mean programming choice, time
and awareness are more important decision making factors.
Almost 20% however have not attended Alexandra Palace in the last year and identified a
number of key reasons below.
If never, why not?
•
31% respondents said Communication was the main reason they hadn’t attended in the last
year, e.g. hadn’t heard about it, didn’t know it was happening.
•
25% respondents said Physical barriers were the main reason they hadn’t attended in the
last year, e.g. location and distance to travel.
•
23% respondents said Relevance was the main reason they hadn’t attended in the last
year, e.g. nothing appealed to them.
What does this mean: Awareness and relevance of programming were perceived as the main
barriers along with location and distance. This has been incorporated into the activity planning in
terms of increased marketing, across a variety of channel – both traditional and digital – and in the
activity programming which is reflective of the needs and wants of underrepresented audiences.
People who have not visited in the last 12 months (18% of respondents) left the following
comments on the project:
•
Installation art
•
Good luck
•
Permanent craft space for a wide range of crafts
•
Tv studio experience should not just be conducted tour. Needs longer access to archive tv
recordings maybe mini cinema or original style tvs very exciting good luck
•
A space port
•
More craft shows
•
Not really sure - maybe local pictures of the early building phases and the changes, as well
as previously stated - the fire and rebuilding of the palace, and the people involved performers both `famous` and local celebrities.
•
Most live performances of any genre would be interesting.
•
Appreciate the effort of this enquiry to find out the opinion of the public
•
Music venue
•
Facilities for Music Recording Studios for unsigned bands. An area where unsigned bands
could perform.
•
There is endless scope for carrying environmental issues, ie; how climate change might
affect London, how the growth of London has affected the UK landscape and so on.
•
Food festivals
•
Fashion exhibits
•
Bouncy castle
•
Live music concert
•
Antiques Roadshow/Flog It etc
•
Art exhibitions
•
Difficult to answer quite a lot of these because I live in Manchester
•
Would love to see a high quality Youth Club
•
The suggestions given seem very adequate.
•
History of Alexandra Palace, somewhat interactive maybe.
•
A place for people to meet to chill out and enjoy coffee/teas in attractive surroundings with
temp exhibitors to add interest
•
More music events, I'm going to the Libertines in September here and plan to come early to
go around the site! Wish there were more bands playing in a venue such as Alexandra
Palace!
•
Art exhibitions of upcoming talent, fashion shows,
•
Halloween events
•
I don't think there is much more as Alexandra Palace covers all different things and for all
age groups and hopefully one day. I will be able to visit with my daughter.
•
Live music, fairs, events
•
Alexandra Palace is just an absolute nightmare to get to, end of. That is the only reason I
have only been once and I have never been since. Its beautiful, but if anything is going to
take me over an hour to get to on 3 or 4 different modes of transport including a massive
hike up a hill, then you can forget it. It'll cost me an absolute fortune before I even get there.
•
Perhaps have certain unpaid attractions or a regular event that people can engage with to
create regualr customers that will come back each week and bring new people
•
Weddings?
•
A quality area to re-energise with suitable refreshments and seating. Possibly with some
one off small exhibitions (art, photography, paintings)
•
Needs a forward looking perspective, as well as backwards
•
Classic cars
•
Forward thinking events that are innovative appealing to make ally pally part of the history
of everyone.
•
Make it a family space a tradition a regular part of lives. Respect the history but bring it inot
a medern life.
•
Not being local, I don't have a good feel for this. I hope that AP will have good facilities and
interactive events, workshops etc for children and young people
•
Good Cinema and theatre
•
Smaller, more intimate music concerts. The main concert area is too big for most artists I
would be interested in seeing.
•
Interesting film and theatre events
•
More concerts and theatre pieces, specially for young people.
•
Weekend festival- art, music, theatre, comedy.
•
Museum of Local History focusing on the development of Wood Green
•
Indoor circus, science festivals, more engaging activities
•
More opportunities for younger generations and activities which would help them find their
talents and interests
•
Sorry, I am interested in the darts.. Many Thanks. Dave
•
More historic spaces live music concerts

Most Popular Themes for project
What does this mean: Alexandra Palace test four key interpretive themes as part of the
consultation to understand the kinds of stories that visitors and non-visitors alike wanted to
learn more about. However, it is still crucial to consider how different groups view these
themes. The following charts investigate the theme choices by age group and still highlight the
issue that young people and people over 60 will need specialist audience development
activities to get them engaged at Alexandra Palace.
Most Popular Workshop or Learning Opportunity
What does this mean: Across the range of activities tested with different audiences, the most
popular related to developing technical skills and applying heritage learning in the context of
another activity. The top three most popular workshops were Digital Editing where elements
of Alexandra Palace’s heritage would be used as the subject matter for the workshop, followed
