Pentagon Memorial Competition - Stage One Entry Display
October 30 - November 9, 2002
This display comprises 84 original entries to the Pentagon Memorial Competition. These entries were
among 1,100 submitted for the first phase of a two-stage competition organized by the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers to identify a concept for a memorial to those who died as a result of the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
These first-stage entries came from all over the U.S. and across the world. They are the creations
of both skilled designers and the general public, and represent an enormous range of ideas and
powerfully felt responses to this tragedy.
At the end of the first stage, a panel of eleven distinguished judges and one alternate, including
artists, architects and landscape architects, two former secretaries of defense, and relatives of the
victims, selected six finalists, who have now been invited to develop their ideas further in
preparation for a second round of judging. The original submissions of the six finalists are included
in this display, and are highlighted.
In the Stage Two, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will ask the finalists to further develop their
concepts and submit the more detailed proposals for review by the jury. The final judging for the
Stage Two has not been scheduled. The National Building Museum, working with the Corps'
Pentagon Memorial project team, is planning to exhibit all of the finalists' work early in 2003. Dates
for this display also have not yet been determined.
The Museum's criteria for selecting the panels displayed were as follows:
• During the initial review, the panel of judges selected forty-five projects for further consideration
and discussion - in effect, the semi-finalists. All of these projects, including the six that were
ultimately selected as finalists, are part of this display and are identified on their labels.
• In addition, the Museum selected a number of other design concepts that feature various
common motifs employed in the submittals. For example, many entries featured flags, eagles or
other specific imagery.
• Finally, a variety of other projects were selected to illustrate the very broad range of design
approaches, as well as the diversity of entrants. Professionals, design students, artists, sculptors,
architects, landscape artists, and the general public, including school children and concerned and
interested non-professionals, all entered the competition.
Please plan to return to the Museum in February of 2003 for the next stage of this extraordinary
competition.
