A sampling of newer resources to support the eighth and ninth grade history social science standard:
8.3 Each of the more than 100 elements of matter has distinct properties and a
distinct atomic structure. All forms of matter are composed of one or more of the
elements.
9.1 The periodic table displays the elements in increasing atomic number and shows
how periodicity of the physical and chemical properties of the elements relates to
atomic structure.

Students explore the historic experiments by scientists Thomson and Rutherford, which led
to the discovery of subatomic particles and the development of nuclear theory. Students
learn that the shape of the periodic table is a direct result of the microscopic structure of
atoms that make up all the elements. Basic high school chemistry concepts are reinforced,
along with clear explanations of the evolution of atomic models through quantum
