Project Paraguay Heart Aflame … … Mind Renewed In the Service of Christ the King March 6, 2016 Dear Friend of Project Paraguay, It is a time for choosing for both our nation and the Church of Christ. A brilliant political writer of the Revolution, Thomas Paine, wrote, “THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” Paine’s poignant pamphlet did much to encourage American patriots. As believers, however, we are likewise motivated by the certainty of Christ’s promise that the gates of hell shall be conquered (Matthew 16:18) and that the Lord shall make His triumph so glorious that “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:14). How wonderful it is to know that we can be part of his magnificent plan and that there is no other work that compares with laboring for the expansion of His Kingdom, so that His Will may be done here as it is in Heaven (Matthew 6:10). Abraham Kuyper, Prime Minister of the Netherlands at the turn of the last century stated, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” Nations rise and fall but the Kingdom of our Lord endures everlastingly. Patriotism is good—especially to ensure that God’s Word is honored and goes forth freely—but as American or Paraguayan Christians, we are patriots of a greater Kingdom with the primary focus of glorifying and obeying the King of Kings through word and deed. In that spirit, Project Paraguay supports the growth of a Church fully committed to proclaiming the primacy of God’s Word in all areas of life—whether it is evangelism, mercy ministries, education, culture, business, church government, or secular government. Our immediate focus is the completion of the physical work at Barrio Parque and starting a work at Mariano. The El Renuevo Session approved the purchase of land and the start of construction in that location. The challenge for us is to raise the funds to pay down the mortgage and begin construction so that our Paraguayan brothers can move forward in spreading the Gospel in that area. Consequently, our mission trip this Summer will focus on Barrio Parque and Mariano. We have 20 slots on our team but have commitments from only around 10 persons, so we have considerable room to grow. Please let me know if you are P.O. This year’s trip participants will include elders of the Potomac Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America, who will participate in the ceremonies inaugurating a new Paraguayan Presbytery composed of three churches. This year will also mark the 15th anniversary of the work initiated by Pastor Joel Acevedo in Paraguay. Both Pastors Acevedo and Amsler, who are the founders of Project Paraguay, will attend the ceremonies. On August 7, the rest of the team, after a week of work, outreach, and fun will have the opportunity to be part of the historic celebration.
