Dehydration: A Hidden Risk to the Elderly
Dehydration: The Causes, The Health Risks
Dehydration in seniors is often due partly to inadequate water
intake, but can happen for many other reasons as well including
diarrhea, excessive sweating, loss of blood, diseases such as
diabetes, as well as a side effect of prescribed medication like
diuretics. Aging itself makes people less aware of thirst and
gradually lowers the body’s ability to regulate its fluid balance.
If dehydration is not identified and treated, the consequences to
health are significant, including reduced or loss of consciousness,
rapid but weak pulse, and lowered blood pressure. If rehydration
is not started, the situation can become life-threatening.
1. 2.
Older people who get enough water tend to suffer less constipation, use less laxatives, have fewer falls and, for men, may have a lower risk of bladder cancer. Less constipation may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
Drinking at least five 8-ounce glasses of water daily reduces the risk of fatal coronary heart disease among older adults.
More Serious Dehydration Symptoms
Low blood pressure, convulsions, severe cramping and muscle
contractions in limbs, back and stomach, bloated stomach,
rapid but weak pulse, dry and sunken eyes with few or no tears,
wrinkled skin; no elasticity, breathing faster than normal.
Elders may not feel thirst as keenly.
Scientists warn that the ability to be aware of and respond to
thirst is slowly blunted as we age. As a result, older people do
not feel thirst as readily as younger people do. This increases
the chances of them consuming less water and consequently
suffering dehydration.
Other Hydration Tips to Consider:
Alcohol should be avoided. Minimize the number of beverages
with caffeine because of its diuretic effect, causing the kidneys to
excrete more water. When you see early signs of dehydration,
offer a sports drink to enable quick replenishment of water and
electrolytes needed by the body. Severe dehydration requires
medical attention; call the doctor.
Mild Dehydration Symptoms
Dryness of mouth; dry tongue with thick saliva, unable to urinate
or pass only small amounts of urine; dark or deep yellow urine,
Dehydration: Staying Hydrated
cramping in limbs, headaches, crying but with few or no tears,
It is Water which sustains life. Here are just two of the benefits weakness, general feeling of being unwell, Sleepiness or
of being hydrated:
irritability.
A good formula for how much water is needed every day is to
take one-third of the person’s body weight in pounds and drink
Caregivers should make sure the older person has water by the equivalent number of ounces of water daily. For example, a
their side at all times. Encourage frequent drinking in moderate 150-pound woman would need 50 ounces of water daily, or about
amounts.

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS FOR SENIORS
The summer season is here and we must prepare
ourselves for the sweltering days that are ahead. So
here is a list of things that we need to be mindful of
during these hot days.
•
Stay Hydrated
We Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration
than younger people because we lose the ability to
conserve water as we age.
John Hopkins Geriatric Center’s Dr. W. Greenough,
states that seniors should make sure they are drinking
sweat replacement products that contain salt and
potassium to replace water loss during the summer.
•
Talk to Your Doctor
Make sure your medications are not affected by the
higher temperatures. This is very important if you
don’t have air conditioning in your home.
•
Keep Cool
Movie theaters, libraries, shopping malls and senior
centers all provide a cool place to go to if your home
isn’t air conditioned. These are also places for you to
get out of the house and get some form of exercise
without being bogged down by the heat.
•
Know Who to Call
Keep a list of emergency phone numbers and place
them in an easy area to access. This way the right
people can be called in the case of an emergency
situation.
•
Protect Your Eyes
Too much exposure to the sun can irritate eyes and
cause damage. Wearing sunglasses can protect
your eyes from harmful UV rays.
•
Wear the Right Kind of Clothing
Summer clothing should be light-colored and loose
fitting. Your summer wardrobe can help you to feel
cooler and more comfortable.
THE PALM REPORTER
•
Know The Risks of Hyperthermia
Be aware of abnormally high body temperatures.
Heat stroke is an advanced form of hyperthermia
which can be life threatening. Know the signs and
get immediate medical attention.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Body temperature greater than 104 degrees.
Being confused, agitated or grouchy.
Dry, flushed skin.
Nausea and vomiting.
Headache
Heavy breathing or a rapid pulse.
Not sweating, particularly when it is hot.
Fainting.
•
Rub on Sunscreen and Wear Hats
Young and old should wear sunscreen when outdoors.
Hats are also important especially for those with light
colored hair and thinning hair.
•
Apply Bug Spray
If you live in an area where there are a lot of
mosquitoes and if you spend a lot of time outdoors,
particularly at night, use mosquito repellent to help
reduce the risk of getting bit by a mosquito that could
be carrying the West Nile Virus and encephalitis.
•
Exercise Smart
When walking or gardening, make sure to wear the
proper clothing and protective gear. Do not stay out
for long periods and make sure to drink more water
than usual when exercising. It is also good if you can
get outdoors earlier in the mornings.
