From the Head of School
Welcome to the 2013-2014 Annual Report—a time to reflect on and celebrate
the many successes of the past school year. We would also like to thank our
extended community for helping us reach our fundraising goals. The 20132014 Annual Fund theme focused on strengthening the core that powers
Fayerweather to ensure that the unique aspects of our school and community
continue to flourish and shine brightly. We are thrilled to announce that more
than 250 donors shared our vision and gave to the annual fund. Together, we
raised more than $180,000.
Throughout the school year we also celebrated many aspects of our school
that are unique to Fayerweather. In the fall, we renewed our commitment to
‘play’ as a critical ingredient of educating the whole child, by holding a ribbon
cutting ceremony for our new playground on Grandparents and Special
Friends Day. Dr. Lisa Kuh, professor of Early Childhood Education and playground researcher, met with our guests to share her findings and explained
how our new playground fosters healthy risk taking and collaborative play.
During our second Midwinter Revel in February, we highlighted another
aspect of Fayerweather that sets us apart—our two long-time librarians,
Connie and Maxie, who have been with us for more than 25 years each! In
addition to honoring these two incredible educators, we raised $13,790 for
financial aid. An additional $14,745 was also raised to purchase a new library
software system that will ensure our library and its 27,000 volumes remain
a hub of energy and joy for our community.
In the spring, we celebrated the arts by holding our third annual Art of Craft
show which featured more than 65 artists and crafts people from all over
New England. By the end of the weekend, $12,715 was raised to support the
Arts at Fayerweather.
As you read through this year’s annual report, please join me in thanking and
celebrating the hundreds of volunteers and donors who made the 2013-2014
school year another great one for children and families. We could not have
done this without you!
With kind regards,
Edward Kuh

From the Board of Directors
As always, I take pleasure in looking back over the activities of the past year
and appreciating the energy and enthusiasm that the Fayerweather community
brings to the annual development effort. I am particularly pleased to see how
the new community-wide events have so quickly become annual traditions.
The Midwinter Revel lifts our spirits in the midst of the chilly dark days of
February. The Art of Craft marks the arrival of full spring. It invites us all to
step outside and enjoy the music and then to explore the extraordinary array
of handmade creations spread throughout the school.
The pleasure in participating is obvious to anyone who scans the crowds at
these events, but I do not want to underestimate the hard work that goes into
making each of them a success. The Development Office leads the way, but they
can count on an army of volunteers, all committed to the immediate goal of a
lively community event and to the long-term goal of securing Fayerweather’s
financial resources for years to come.
For me, this year’s annual report has a special meaning: it covers my last year
as President of the FSS Board of Directors. These last four years as Board
president have given me a chance to re-enter the Fayerweather community and
to share in those electric moments when the meaning of progressive education
is visible in the words, the work and the relationships of kids at this school. And
I marvel at the many ways in which this school community touches the lives
of adults, as well as children.
A special thanks to all of you who have transformed the development efforts,
shared your resources with this remarkable school community, and helped to
make those electric moments possible.
Best wishes for success in the coming years.
Cynthia Taft
Chair, Board of Directors

FSS
: Annual Report of Giving
From the Development Committee
All year long, the Fayerweather community comes together again and again
to witness the rich educational experience that the school has provided for
nearly 50 years. We celebrate art, drama, and music at All-School Meetings,
the Unit Play, and seasonal concerts, and cheer on our kids at athletic events
and parkour demonstrations. We walk the halls and take in the visual and
written creativity that hangs on the walls, and we hear the excited voices of
teachers illuminating science topics and kids solving math problems.
The intimate, engaging learning experience that Fayerweather teachers
are able to provide depends on the hard work and generosity of that same
community. Staff, board members, and parent volunteers organize a wide
range of events designed to raise funds to preserve and improve all of the
aspects of the school that we cherish. We aim to make each of those events—
the Midwinter Revel, the Art of Craft, and alumni reunions—enjoyable, warm,
and engaging. We hope that each development initiative reflects our shared
mission to provide teachers with the resources they need in the classroom,
and the administration the ability to attract and retain the most talented
faculty. Your generous support for Fayerweather keeps tuition down and
generates the budget strength necessary to offer generous financial aid.
It is critical to a sustainable, forward-looking, and diverse institution.
We thank every member of the Fayerweather community who contributed
time to organize and volunteer at these events, and who gave generously
to the Annual Fund and other initiatives during the year. We take all of these
contributions as expressions of the gratitude and admiration that we have
for Fayerweather: our teachers, staff and students, present and future.
With thanks,
Peter Kochansky
Chair, Development Committee

FISCAL
REPORT
From the Financial Office
We are pleased to present Fayerweather’s financial report for 2013-2014 (FY14).
It was another positive financial year for the school.
In three years, Fayerweather will celebrate 50 years as a leading local institution
of progressive education. Our first years were spent in a residential area in
Huron Village. Fifteen years ago, in 1999, we moved to our current home at
765 Concord Avenue—a significant milestone in the life of the school.
In the past ten years, careful financial management and stewardship have
brought Fayerweather into a period of financial balance and growing financial
health. We’ve managed to create a modest operating reserve, a building reserve,
and a fledgling endowment. We are also gradually paying off our mortgage
balance (currently at $1.7 million), including a recent pay-down of $200,000
which lowered our debt service payments by more than $10,000 per year.
At the same time, we’ve kept teachers’ salaries and benefits competitive, put
a check on annual tuition increases (3.5% in FY14), and supported our school’s
diversity and accessibility with a generous program of financial aid.
In FY14, almost 30% of Fayerweather families received financial aid
totaling $852,540.
This is our ninth consecutive year of “getting beyond break-even”a crucial goal
for any nonprofit organization with aspirations for a bright and thriving future.
While tuition is by far our biggest revenue driver (about 87% of revenues this
year), in the end it is actually development income—especially the Annual Fund—
that lifts us above break-even, and ensures our continued health and well-being.
In FY14, on total expenses of just under $5.6 million, we earned a net
surplus of $115,992.
We are deeply indebted to our past Board Chair, Cindy Taft; our new Board
Chair, Julia Cavanaugh, and all the members of our board and finance committee
who understand their fiscal stewardship roles well, and take them very seriously.
Most of all, we thank each one of you for your continuing commitment
to Fayerweather as a school and a community!

One of my favorite things about Fayerweather is
the relationships that are developed between kids

loved seeing my daughters connect with students
across the entire school, learning together in and

MIDWINTER
REVEL
Librarians, Connie Biewald and Maxie Chambliss,
were the toast of the evening at the Midwinter Revel
celebration. Under a canopy of twinkling lights and
a hand-made chandelier, party-goers danced, dined
and raised funds to purchase new library software
and support the financial aid program.

My favorite thing about FSS has always been the
Unit students. For the 16 years I was a teacher
at FSS, I found the Unit students to be articulate,
curious, and remarkably able to engage easily in
conversation with anyone!

My favorite things about Fayerweather are the
ways the school has helped develop, support and
guide my daughter for ten years. FSS is an integral

High School as demonstrated by her high GPA and
being named one of the captains of the freshman
soccer team. Thank you FSS!

From the Development Office
As the Director of Development and parent of an eighth grader, I have the
unique opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes, both for children
and adults, throughout the Fayerweather school day. I frequently get to see
my daughter, Nell, working, learning and socializing with her friends. And
I work and connect with MY friends, the staff and those in the community
who come in to inquire about volunteer needs, drop off a donation, or to
talk about the next great thing. I feel very fortunate that my personal and
professional lives share common space during the day.
I try to take time to honor both the personal relationships I’ve made and
the commitment I have to my job at Fayerweather. As with most of us,
many of my friends are the parents of my child’s friends. At the same time,
in my development role, I regularly ask this same set of people to help the
school by giving their time and their financial resources. As always, I thank
them for being enthusiastic supporters of Fayerweather. You might think
it’s challenging, if not awkward, to balance work responsibilities while
maintaining authentic friendships I’ve made at the school.
Strangely, the opposite is true. Some of my closest friends are the ones
I’ve made while crafting decorations for Midwinter Revel, moving tables
and chairs to set up lunch for Grandparents & Special Friends Day, or while
brainstorming events and activities that fit our school’s culture. The more
I immerse myself in this community, the more I get out of it for my own
growth and satisfaction. So many good things have happened through the
work of people who see volunteering as a way to strengthen friendships
and have fun doing the work that is required for an event to be successful.
We had over 200 parents, students, grandparents, alumni and staff members
volunteer this past school year!
Nell will graduate at the end of this year, and I will no longer play this dual
role. What won’t change are the great friendships I have made, and the
friendships I anticipate making with new families joining the Fayerweather
community.
Thank you for bringing your commitment, passion and energy into creating
successful events at our school. I am truly lucky to get to do this work with
all of you who treasure the school as much as I do.
