Physical Description of a Hand-Operated Can Opener

Physical Description of a Hand-Operated Can Opener
A hand-operated can opener is used to open the lid on metal cans with ease. The strength of your hand
combined with the use of this tool forms a tight clamp on the can, which allows a cutting wheel to pierce
through the metal lid. A hand crank then makes the cutting wheel rotate around the perimeter of the
lid while cutting it. Included is a bottle opener for easy cap removal from glass bottles.
The Swing-A-Way hand-operated can opener, detailed below, is chrome plated with rubber gripped
handles. It is 7 inches long, 3.25 inches wide, and weighs 9.1 ounces.

CUTTING WHEEL (2)
Push the cutting wheel (2) into the perimeter of the lid of the metal can
to be opened so the wheel is parallel to the edge of the can.
HAND CRANK (3)
Hold the handles (1) tight on the metal can to be opened with one hand
and turn the hand crank (3) with your other hand. Turning the hand
crank (3) will rotate the lower gear (4).
LOWER GEAR (4)
Continue turning the hand crank (3) while holding the handles (1)
tightly closed, the lower gear (4) will move the upper gear (5).
UPPER GEAR (5)
Keep turning the hand crank (3) so the upper gear (5) (which is
connected to the cutting wheel (2)) rotates the cutting wheel (2).
Continue turning the hand crank (3) until the cutting wheel (2) has cut
entirely around the circumference of the metal can.
BOTTLE OPENER (6)
Place the sharp tip of the bottle opener (6) securely under the lip of a
bottle cap while holding the handles (1) closed. Hold the glass bottle
with your other hand and using the handles (1) lift the can opener up
with your wrist until the cap becomes loose from the glass bottle.
