Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
This is my beloved Son, Listen to him
In the gospel of this weekend we hear ‘This is my
beloved Son. Listen to him.” When I was reading this
passage of the gospel, I asked myself a question, is
there any significant difference between hearing and
listening? The answer is an absolute yes! Hearing and
listening, though synonymous, are completely different things. Listening is a step further
than hearing. Listening means to interpret the noise one hears, understand it, and
provide an adequate response to it. Listening requires concentration and thoughtful
attention. What it means is that one can hear without listening.
No wonder God wants us to listen to Jesus. When we listen to Jesus, our minds and that
of His, understand each other, they rub, mingle, and glue together; listening to Jesus
brings about intimacy in our relationship with God. One of the greatest problems of our
time is that the world hears Jesus but does not listen to Him: the noise in the world; the
noise of materialism, relativism, freedom without responsibility, individualism and
consumerism have prevented many people from listening to Jesus.
God expects us to listen to Jesus, with the heart of our ears to the heart of his voice.
When we listen with the heart of our ears, we hear God well. Listening to the heart of
God’s voice brings about conversion because it is only “by listening to the good news that
the whole world will believe and by believing, may have hope and by hoping it may love.
(Dei Verbum 1).
God talks to us every day. He talks to us through the bible, through the teachings of the
Church, through priest’s homilies, through our consciences, through nature and through
people we encounter every day. God wants us to listen to Jesus so that we can we
transformed and transfigured. When we encounter God, we will never remain the same;
we will, like Peter say, ‘it is wonderful to be here!’ There is no better time to listen to God
more, than this time of lent! May God grant us the grace to be active listeners and doers
of His word. Amen.
Announcement:
With joy, we announce that Fr. Peter Dillon has been appointed the parish priest of our
parish. He comes to us from St. Mary’s Ipswich. We are looking forward to welcoming

READINGS NEXT WEEK:
Over 1000 people attended Sacred Heart Church for Bishop-elect Tim’s Farewell Mass, which was
3rd Sunday of Lent;
concelebrated by Bishop Brian Finnigan, Fr Mark Franklin (Kenmore PP), Fr Jan Bialasiewicz
Exodus 17:3-7;

their generosity and support during his six years as Parish Priest. He especially acknowledged and

The parish continues to pray for Bishop-elect Tim as he takes up his duties as Bishop of
REFLECTION:
The
Gospel today presents the Townsville.
Transfiguration. Peter, James and
John go up a hill with Jesus and have
a most intimate encounter with
Jesus, God, and, of course, themselves. Jesus dazzles with some state
of glorification. Moses, the man of
the law, and Elijah, the man of
prophesy, are seen conversing with
Jesus symbolising that Jesus is the
fulfillment of the law and the
prophets. Immediately after this
experience the disciples are left with
questions about what it was all
about. Jesus tells them not to speak
about it until he had risen from the
dead. They did not understand this,
either, but they kept on walking back
down from this hill of intimacy.
Peter, James and John experienced
an unusual convention and communion. They are “befuddled-beholders”
and they go off into the routine of
living their lives. Their faith seems to
be strengthened but at the same
time they experience bewilderment
and must ask themselves about the
“realness” of what has just
happened.
Devotion, prayer, liturgy can be
similar calls to simple and honest
closeness. Trying to figure out these
experiences and explain them cheapens them and flattens them out into
a practice rather than a delight. We
go toward a time of being met by the
Holy, given something of ourselves
by the encouragement and comfort
of God’s presence and then sent
away, but always the little question,
“Was that really real? Or was I
talking to myself, comforting myself,
judging myself?”
