It was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, when taking into consideration the full extent and duration of its fallout. The crash signaled the beginning of the 10-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries. In the midst of this financial crisis, St. Teresa’s School opened its doors in September of 1930. Only two classrooms were completed on what is now the first floor of the old school building. There were twenty-three children (kindergarten through 3rd grade in one room, and 4th through 7th in the other) who entered the school that year under the direction of two Dominican Sisters -- Sr. Theona Walla and Sr. Martha Nally. Tuition was $1.00 per month for each student. It was an exciting time, but the combination of a new parish and the Great Depression almost continuously threatened the parish and school with bankruptcy. However, the enthusiasm of Msgr. Kaczmarek and the faith of the parishioners not only kept this marvelous parish afloat, but they continued to plan and build for the future. By the end of the 1950’s, a large convent, a beautiful church and a huge addition to the school were constructed, and the rectory would be built in 1962. This amazing accomplishment was possible only through the hard work, sacrifice and generosity of the people. In January 1957, following the completion of the new addition to the school, Msgr. Kaczmarek wrote: March 2017 Upcoming Events! † March 1: Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent † April 8: Confirmations by Bishop Conley † April 16: Easter Sunday † April 29: First Holy Communions † May 22: 8th Grade Graduation Mass † June 11 - 16: Totus Tuus week for grade school and high school students. Mark you calendars! Parishioners of St. Teresa’s are to be congratulated for their courage, keen insight, and vision of the future with all its demands – and what is more – all these were met to the best of their ability in a response that finds no equal in the Diocese of Lincoln. When men and women not only work and sacrifice for their church but also pledge their very personal assets, their homes, to guarantee payment on principal and interest of debt – we have a singular phenomenon. When I arrived in January 1937, the major problem facing the people of St. Teresa’s was a terrible debt. It is a matter of record that twenty men from the thirty-nine families residing here at that time, pledged their personal property in or- If we go all the way back to the Council of der to make sure that payment would be made on the debt. Nicaea (325 AD), we discover that, already That is a record without parallel. LENT: 40 Days With Jesus The sacrifices of the good people who built up our parish impacted the future—OUR TIME! We are benefiting so much from all their sacrifices. Now, our sacrifices will impact the future for others. Twenty-two years ago, our St. Teresa’s School Endowment was started with $65,000 left by Msgr. Kaczmarek to St. Teresa’s. By continual care to add to this sum, our Endowment has grown to over $2 million dollars, amounting to $85,000 of interest income to our parish in 2016. Let us all prayerfully consider sacrificial gifts to our Endowment. We have been so blessed by the sacrifices of others, it is time for us to sacrificially give to impact the future of those who will enjoy this parish family after us. Thank you for your continued support. Your generous donations really make a difference! May the good Lord bless you and reward you for all your generous support. then, Lent was a well-established period of 40 days of preparation for Easter. This length of time was associated, by the earliest Christians, with Christ’s forty day fast in the desert before beginning His public life. As we begin to think of the difficulties of Lent, we must not forget how much more rigorously Jesus spent His forty days in the desert. He sacrificed, fasted, prayed and suffered out of love for us. Let us do the same out of love for Him! May God bless us all with a very holy Lent!
