Bud Spreng and Bob Zonneville with
Mentor’s VFW Post 9295 and Doug
Koman from the American Legion Post
352 are going
above and beyond
the call of duty with
their newest project.
Their mission is
to visit with vets
who were in active
service, especially
in either the Korean War or World War
II. According to Bob, “The needs of
each generation differs and a lot of
the older vets may benefit from talking
with another veteran of their era. We
can reminisce about those things that
we also experienced first hand.” If you
know of a vet who would enjoy talking to
another vet, call Bob at (440) 257-6448
or Bud at (440) 255-2917.

Deer Population
T
he overpopulation of white-tailed deer in Ohio also remains
a problem in Mentor. Besides the growing number of deer
related vehicular collisions, there is the very real threat of disease
transmission, along with the damage to private and public property.
City Council has studied this highly sensitive subject of what to do
about the herds. Public meetings were held and professionals from the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) presented facts about the dangers
of overpopulation and how best to manage the deer. As a result, City Council
is reviewing the next step in a comprehensive deer management approach by
entertaining legislation allowing limited bow hunting within city limits.
As proposed in the legislation, applicants will be required to meet all ODNR
licensing regulations for archery hunting in the State of Ohio. In addition,
applicants must also apply for and receive a permit from the Mentor Police
Department that includes a Certificate of Archery Proficiency.
Hunting will be restricted to parcels of five acres or
greater, or a combination of no more than three
contiguous properties. Applicants must have
the property owner’s permission on those
properties they intend to hunt. The Chief of
Police will also have authority to determine
whether any property is unsuitable for
hunting, regardless of size and location.
Contact Captain Kevin Knight with the
Mentor Police Department at 974-5760 or
[email protected] for information on the
permitting process.
Bow hunting qualification test
will require a score of 45
out of 50 in either a five or ten
shot qualification. The following

Outdoor Siren
S ystem
T
he Lake County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) uses an emergency
alert outdoor siren system to warn citizens of possible dangers such as chemical
emergencies, natural and man-made disasters, and national security issues.
The sirens are tested at 11:00 AM on the second Wednesday in January, April, July and October.
Sirens are sounded three times, and each three-minute sounding is separated by a 30-second break.
If the sirens sound at any other time -- follow these directions calmly, but immediately:
• Go indoors, close all doors and windows.
• Tune to local emergency information stations. Follow broadcast information.
• DO NOT call 911. Such calls could hinder response activities.
• Stay tuned to your radio or TV for further information.
Emergency workers will check to see if you know about the emergency. To show that you know
about the emergency and DO NOT need assistance, tie a towel to your door, mailbox, or other object
visible from the road. Check on neighbors as time permits, especially those who could need assistance
and confirm that they have received the emergency message and know what to do.
If you have questions about the siren system, or have a Special Needs Request,
call the EMA at (440) 350-5499.
Mulch Fires
Mentor Fire Department
The risk of a mulch fire is more common than you might
expect, in fact there have been days when the Mentor Fire
Department has responded to as many as five mulch fires.
Mulch fires are especially common when below average
rainfall and record high temperatures cause extremely dry
conditions. Ohio’s smoking laws that forbid smoking inside
commercial and public buildings add to the problem when
smokers discard their lit cigarettes into landscaped areas
near a building’s entrance.
Typically, mulch fires generate more heat and can
burn for a long period of time. They can be alleviated if
smokers were more aware when discarding their smoking
materials. They should also know that they are personally
accountable for damage caused by discarding lighted
materials. Mentor’s fire investigation unit investigates all
significant fire loss and works to identify those responsible.
We ask you to use care when discarding smoking
materials and when considering landscape materials.
Know that mulch fires can quickly spread to the building’s
combustible material, including any vehicles parked close
to the area. Do not hesitate to contact the Mentor Fire
Prevention Office at 974-5768 if you have any questions.

Important News
The following projects are
scheduled over the next
few months:
• The Ohio Department of
Transportation (ODOT) will
continue construction on the
third phase of the SR 2 Widening
and Reconstruction Project to
add a third lane, noise walls and
new pavement from just east of
SR 306 to SR 44. Work should
be completed in October.
• The city will add a bike path between Shore
Middle School and Washington Avenue,
improve sidewalks from Eagles Nest Road
to Orchard Hollow Elementary, and make
crosswalk updates at Morton Elementary.
Also included will be a school flasher upgrade
on Hopkins Road for Shore Middle School.
This is an ODOT Safe Routes to School Grant
project.
• Provide an asphalt overlay on Station Street
from Jackson Street west to the Center
Street intersection. Drainage work will also
be performed on the eastern half of the
project. This project is partially funded by
an Ohio Public Works Commission Local
Transportation Improvement Program Grant.
• Make adjustments to the basin adjacent to
SR 2 and Center Street to reduce peak flows
and downstream flooding during heavy rains.
• The city will replace and enlarge two roadway
culverts under Garfield Road and Stoneybrook
Lane, add rock channel protection to control
stream erosion and repair the existing
overflow spillway at the retention pond at SR
84 and Garfield Road. This work is expected
to be completed by October.
Tips to Prevent Mulch Fires
• Do not toss cigarettes off decks
or porches or put in potted plant
containers.
• Use only approved receptacles for
matches, cigarettes and cigars.
• Recognize that mulch fires can
start more readily when the
weather is hot and there has been
little or no rain.
• Provide and/or use a minimum 18inch clearance between landscaped
mulch beds and combustible
building materials, such as exterior
vinyl siding, wood siding and decks.
Black Brook
Golf Course &
Practice Center
If it’s Nice Out, We’re Open!
• Keep mulch beds as moist as
possible.
• Provide proper clearance for
electric devices such as decorative
lights.
• Use noncombustible mulch such
as rock or pea gravel around
the gas meter and next to the
combustible portions of the
structure.
• Use only the manufacturer’s
recommended size/wattage for
yard light bulbs.
• Use only electrical devices and
cords labeled for outdoor use.
Fall is the perfect season to play a round
with cooler temperatures and more
available tee times. Winter rates go into
effect October 1st and money saving
discount cards are available at the Pro
Shop. Call (440) 951-0010 for tee times.

What to do with
all that Oil
Do you change the oil on your car at home? Do you have old cans of
paint just taking up space in your garage or basement? Did you know
that these things could be harmful to Lake Erie? They are.
Everything that you rinse from the garage floor or driveway, or
dump down a storm sewer, flows directly into the lake. And whatever
enters a storm sewer in the street
makes its way into Lake Erie – and
not a wastewater treatment plant.
It only takes a quart of motor
oil to make an oil slick many acres
in size. Prevent that rainbow sheen
from appearing in the creek behind
your house by properly disposing
your used motor oil, never dump oil
in a storm drain, and fix any leaks on
your car. Some area auto part stores
accept used motor oil for disposal.
You can also take any leftover solvents, pesticides, paints, and other
chemicals to the Lake County Solid Waste District special collection
day for proper disposal at the Lake County Fairgrounds on Saturday,
September 29.
Please help keep Mentor beautiful and Lake Erie clean. This
information has been provided by the Lake County General
Health District and Mentor’s Engineering Department. For
more information, contact the city at 974-5785.
