DeLaval chooses interference-free inverter
for sustainable milk production
DeLaval wants to provide customers with modern and energy efficient products to help ensure
sustainable milk production. This means that it is important that the products are both interference-free and
reliable. DeLaval is investing in new interference-free technology and has signed a long-term
collaboration agreement with the Swedish company NFO Drives on annual deliveries of the NFO Sinus®
frequency inverter. The inverter, which is completely interference-free, will be used to regulate the speed of
electric motors in DeLaval’s own products, for example milk pumps and vacuum pumps.
“DeLaval has a clear policy on protecting the
environment and cow health as well as good
milk quality,” says Tord Ringenhall, product
manager at DeLaval. “It is well known that
cows are sensitive to electrical emissions, for
example earth leakage currents, and that
technical equipment in both stables and
surroundings may be sensitive to electro
magnetic disturbances. At DeLaval we
want our products to produce the cleanest
electric environment possible. Choosing the
NFO Sinus® frequency inverter means that
we can now offer our customers a completely
interference-free technology and thus
contribute to a sustainable environment.”
World leading
DeLaval is one of the world’s leading companies within the dairy industry.
The company is a full service supplier to
dairy farmers and develops, manufactures
and distributes equipment and complete
systems for milk production and animal
husbandry. Milking equipment are a central
product. Machines are available for all types of
farms from the very simplest manual standard
machine to advanced automatic milking
systems and “cow carousels” with a capacity
of 800 cows twice per day.
DeLaval, a company in the Tetra Laval
group, is active in over 100 markets and
supplies to customers with livestock herds
from 1 to 50,000 animals.
Long-term testing
“We have tested the NFO Sinus® inverter
for a long time in both laboratory and stable
environments at farms around the world,”
says Tord Ringenhall. “We have ascertained
that the NFO inverter has unique properties
that make it entirely interference free and
therefore appropriate in DeLaval’s product
strategy. We have now decided to use it
to control our vacuum pumps and we also
see a range of different applications where
we can benefit from the interference-free
technology.
In order to withstand the harsh environment in animal stables, the NFO inverter
is designed with a sealed and more robust
enclosure than used in the existing standard
version of NFO Sinus®.
Tord Ringenhall, DeLaval Product Manager: “The NFO inverter has a patent technology that means
that it is completely interference-free, which is well suited to DeLaval’s product strategy.”

DeLaval AMR (Automatic Milking Rotary
System) is the world’s first automatic
milking rotary system with a capacity of
800 cows twice per day.
Nothing, including animals or people, will need to be
disturbed when using DeLaval’s equipment. DeLaval
has therefore taken a strategic decision to invest in
interference-free technology from NFO Drives when
controlling the vacuum pump and milk pump motors.
DeLaval VMS is a
system for voluntary
automatic milking.
ADVANTAGES for DeLaval
in USING NFO Sinus®
INTERFERENCE-  Meets the highest EMC requirements for technical equipment, FREE AND including medical equipment. Patented technology
SAFE
 No electromagnetic interference that affect technical
equipment in stables or surroundings
No earth leakage currents that affect animals or technical
equipment in stables or surroundings
 High electrical safety. Earth leakage breakers (RCDs) can be used
Silent – no disturbing switch sound is generated in the motor
 No bearing currents that wear out the motor bearing.
5 year bearing guarantee.
DeLaval’s milking system uses pumps in which
the frequency inverter regulates pump speed
in order to achieve silent operation and lower
energy consumption.
SensorLESS veCtor-
CONTROL


High total efficiency
Saves up to 65 % energy
Full torque from standstill
Accurate motor control possible
 Good motor monitoring

DeLaval NFO Drive, which is used to control
DeLaval’s vacuum pumps, is an OEM version
of the NFO Sinus® frequency inverter
Sinus technology vs. PWM technology
The difference between conventional
PWM technology and the patented
sinus technology is clearly apparent on
an oscilloscope:
PWM technology breaks up the voltage
into short, uneven pulse (the red curve).
Sinus technology generates an even
curve (the green curve).
Sinus technology does not require
EMC-filters or shielded cables to fulfil
the EMC directive.
