In 1990 Woodmore spoke 595 words in 56 seconds, this is equal to 637 words a minute. He trains by choosing a passage from a book and reciting it over and over again and usually only practises the evening before a speaking event. However, if his record is broken, he trains for up to six weeks to win it back. In 1995 Shannon recited Hamlet’s soliloquy “To be or not to be” (260 words) in 23 seconds, equal to 655 words a minute. You might like to find this famous speech in Shakespeare’s play where Hamlet, alone on stage, questions the meaning of life. Recite it yourself, keeps a note of how longit takes you and compare!
