 You may buy your own book and use it to complete the questions. The edition is not important.
 You were required to sign off that you received your book at the end of your 8th grade term, so no excuses will be
accepted as to why reading or the work was not completed. Late packets will be accepted the first week of school
for a maximum grade of a 75D. You will take the test on normal testing day whether you have finished the reading
or not.
 You may not complete this packet with classmates. You may not copy work from the internet and use it as your
own. All work you do must be your own. If you are found guilty of cheating, you will receive a zero on whatever
part of the assignment on which you cheated.

Answer 3 of the following responses in paragraph form (attach handwritten or typed essays to packet). Each must be at least one paragraph
(8-10+ sentences). Use the text (quotes or examples) to support your answers.
Essay #1
What does it mean to say that Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel? What are the important symbols?
Essay #2
Of all the characters, it is Piggy who most often has useful ideas and sees the correct way for the boys to organize themselves. Yet the other
boys rarely listen to him and frequently abuse him. Why do you think this is the case?
Essay #3
Ralph says in Chapter 12 "there was that indefinable connection between himself and Jack; who therefore would never let him alone; never."
What is that connection? How does it develop and what does it signify?
Essay #4
Describe some of the ways the vision of a human "at once heroic and sick" (Chapter 6) is represented in the novel and within the larger
context of history as well. Does Golding prescribe a remedy for the "sickness"?
Essay #5
In E.I. Epstein’s notes at the back of the novel, he claims that “the lord of the flies” is “the central symbol itself” (p. 205). Do you agree that the
lord of the flies, or Beelzebub character, is indeed the most significant symbol in Golding’s book? If not, what is? The conch? Piggy’s glasses?
Explain and defend your claim.
Essay #6
By definition, a dystopia is “a futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are
maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case
scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system” (ReadWriteThink). How does Lord of the Flies fit this
definition and genre?
Essay #7
Ralph and Jack compete from the beginning, each exhibiting different leadership qualities. Which boy makes the best leader and why? What
gives him power? Contrast the two boys’ leadership styles.
