Maundy Thursday
April 13, 2017
The Maundy Thursday Eucharistic Celebration has all the
markings of the life in Jesus Christ’s fulfillment of the Passover/
new life in the Pascal mystery.
Exodus tells the story of God’s freeing the Israelites from slavery.
It was introduced by the blood of a lamb that was eaten as food
for the journey, smeared on the doorposts so the “angel of death”
would passover the scourge about to be brought on the Egyptian
captors. The Jewish people, filled with this “lamb” would travel
through the sea (baptism) to freedom.
I give you a new commandment:
that you love one another. By this
everyone will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one
another. John 13
Jesus is presented to us by Paul as the new “Pascal Lamb” who
would take away the sins of the world. (Remember John the
Baptist saying: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins
of the world.) The people eating this new “food” would, having
been given a whole new commandment/way of living by Jesus
when he washed the apostles’ feet, be ready for a new journey of
love and forgiveness, freed from the slavery of the old law,
endowed with the law of love when we awaken in the
Resurrection as freed people.
From now on, whenever we break Bread we are reminded of our
new commandment of Love and are constantly revitalized, living
our love in this great Divine Dance among all God’s people.

Let’s sing aloud today’s Psalm: “How can I repay the Lord for all
the good things he has done for me? I will lift up the cup of
salvation and call on the Name of the Lord. O Lord, I am your
servant…you have freed me from my bonds.”
