Ensuring a standard approach to quality...
Mains fed to achieve
parity with bottled
coolers by 2019
The West European water
cooler market grew by a
further 2% during 2014 to an
end of year total of 2.9M
units according to food and
drinks consultancy Zenith

CHAIRMAN's WELCOME
No Brexit from the "E"for the EDWCA.
The EDWCA are not brexiting the "E" and are, instead,
moving away from any lingering historic perception
that the association is only representing main supply
dispensers.
As coffee continues to grow within our membership it
remains even more important to strengthen our links
with the AVA and to grow our partnership with the EVA
Mains fed water coolers
came close to overtaking
bottled water coolers with a
5% rise in the number of
units contrasting with the
0.2% decline in bottled cooler
numbers. Bottled coolers
now account for 55% share
while mains fed water
coolers are steadily heading
towards the majority share.

to maintain our leading voice within the UK and now in
Europe.
It is important to review the progression that the
EDWCA has made, and that despite the incubation of
the association in Mains Fed dispensers it has matured
into the "inclusive" trade association, welcoming
members from the wider beverage industry, always
with water still at the heart.
EDWCA in print...
The EDWCA PR machine has
been hard at work over the last
couple of months raising the
profile of its members, the
Association and the Industry.
From creating meaningful,
positive partnership to
developing a new look for the
Association.
The association continues to look at new technology
and innovation within the whole water dispenser
industry. We continue to be a library of information for
our members ensuring that quality and consistency
remains at the bedrock of our association.
We have been working behind
the scenes post Brexit to
collaborate with the EVA and
its' European Association to
establish standard work
practices for Installation and
Sanitation.
The EDWCA PR machine have been hard at work in
2016 raising the profile of the Association, its' members
and the industry by creating meaningful, positive
partnerships to develop its core stability.
Once again the EDWCA and
its' members are at the
forefront of innovation and
development drawing on the
wealth of knowledge accrued
over a number of years in the
POU industry to assist our
European partners.
2016 has been a year of growth within the economy for
many of us, with green shoots of financial stability
beginning to show and positive messages of growth
within our industry.
Your Executive council along with the secretariat will
continue to work on your behalf to make your
association the association of choice within the water
and wider beverage industry. Look out in early 2017 for
the new look Association Logo and website.
It only remains for all on the Executive Council and your
secretariat to wish you a very merry Christmas and a
prosperous New Year.
James Anderton
Chairman
It is clear that the UK market on
POU is much more mature than
in Europe and we are happy to
share the knowledge.
We have been published in
Cooler Plus for our feature on
Filters and Filtration, carrying
out a round table discussion
with some of the industry’s
leading suppliers and
manufacturers of filters. This
should make for an interesting
read.

EDWCA & AVA celebrate a successful 2016
The Christmas Luncheon took place on 8th December at
One Whitehall Place, London and it was a wonderful
afternoon of festivities and networking.
One Whitehall Place at The Royal Horse Guards Hotel is
one of London's most prestigious and majestic event
venues. An elegant Victorian masterpiece with ornate
sculptured ceilings, a grand marble staircase and
glittering chandeliers, it's ideally located on Victoria
Embankment with stunning views over the River
Thames and the London Eye from where we had our
drinks reception. There were welcome drinks for all our
guests and the room was filled with music played by
Harriet Adie on her harp.
During the meal we also had some entertainment from
The Christmas Tree-O who sung four classic Christmas
songs a Capella and brought some festive spirit to the
event. A raffle was held to raise money for Macmillan
Cancer Support who supports people who are going
through cancer and their families. We had 10 prizes in
total, provided by our members and ourselves, which
included hampers, golf prizes and a John Lewis gift
voucher and we raised an impressive £2,672.50 which
will make such a difference to those who need it.
As the meal slowly wound down and all the wine had all
been drunk, most people moved on to Ruby Blue Bar in
Leicester Square for an after-party with welcome drinks
sponsored by Huhtamaki UK. The bar had a great party
atmosphere and the event went on into the night.

Introduced the updated version of our
installers' course, which includes a stringent
practical element. In 2016, we delivered two
fully subscribed EDWCA/NSF Installers course,
training 23 members of our association.
Developed Hygiene and Industry Awareness
Course by including all relevant industry
changes, such as hot water dispensers, new
regulation surrounding CLP, and innovation
with filters. We have delivered 17 Hygiene and
Industry Awareness Courses around the UK and
Eire, developing the awareness
of 190 members of the association.
Worked with affiliate partnerships and industry
stakeholders to deliver even more practical
benefits across a broader spectrum of
membership. We were delighted to welcome
new members Aquacool, Datateam Business
Media and Closed Loop Environmental
Solutions (t/a Simply Cups) this year.
Worked with our members to help them attain
the highest standards, as well as the confidence
to launch more products and services and to be
successful in a changing marketplace. Our
Audit, Training and Technical committees have
been monitoring changes within the industry
and ensuring information is delivered to our
members.
Completed over 50 operator audits in 2016
with all members compliant by the end of
November 2016. Emphasis has been placed on
supporting our operator members with
technical bulletins, templates and guidance
notes. Our auditor is on hand to assist not only
our operators but all of our members membership is much more than a tick in the
box.
Raising the profile of members, the association
and the industry by creating meaningful,
positive partnerships. We have worked behind
the scenes post-Brexit, collaborating with the
EVA to establish standard work practices for
Installation and Sanitation; attended several
exhibitions such as Vendex, TUCO and
appeared in several trade media publications.

Namibia...ahead of the
times
There are cities worldwide that
are attempting to make the
decision as to whether they
should build facilities like the
one that exists on the outskirts
of Windhoek, the capital city of
Namibia. In the middle of the
desert, in a remote region of
southern Africa, wastewater
has been successfully recycled
back into drinking water for
nearly 50 years.
The plant in Namibia uses the
most basic creatures to allow
the result of recycled and
drinkable water. Cutting edge
technology in the form of
bacteria allows the waste to be
broken down and purified.
"Everything is done
biologically, by the
organisms,"
"The plant was originally
designed to treat 27,000 cubic
meters [of sewage] a day but
now sometimes during peak
hours; we have around 41,000
cubic meters a day.
Although this idea may repulse
many consumers and cause
protests, should such a process
be used in other nations? The
technology that was begun in
Namibia has proven to be safe
and effective in providing
drinkable water.
At the time Namibia began
recycling wastewater, there
was not a lot of public input.
The nation was controlled by
EDWCA's latest Trade Show. Although small,
the show was perfectly formed giving visitors
the chance to engage with suppliers from the
water, beverage and vending industries in a
relaxed atmosphere.
Combined with the vending industries annual
awards ceremony the Vendies, in which
innovation, quality and standards are
recognised, the EDWCA event took place in
London prestigious Chelsea Harbour Hotel the
show allowed members to extend their core
business whilst having the confidence and
support to explore other business mediums still
involving our core product of water.
With a fusion of Water, Coffee & Ancillary
services such as Insurance, logistics and
consumables the Trade show was well
attended with visitors from all sectors and
beyond and being located in London the
EDWCA Trade Show attracted high profile
buyers such as TFL (Transport for London).
Watch out for more event announcements in early
2017
With a new look for the association and a new website
planned for early 2017, the future for the EDWCA is
promising and we will continue to work for the benefit
of our members and our industry.

something that can happen,"
he says. "That is the product
from this plant is 100 percent
purified sewage water."
