News and Events
Head of Primary,
Mrs. Catherine Readman
We live in a technology orientated world!
Today’s reality is, we are living in a technology orientated world and things are
moving so quickly, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed with what we should or
should not be doing in terms of allowing our children to access to technology.
I recently read an interesting article (see link below) and thought I would share
this with you.
Five main points are highlighted:
1. Teaching children that media use means more than just entertainment.
2. As far as entertainment, use recommended trusted content producers.
3. Having unplugged spaces and times of day for use of technology.
4. Asking parents to test apps and watch videos with their children to determine
if they are good fits for their child’s temperament, rather than letting the child
make all of these choices.
5. Parents should not feel pressure to introduce their children to technology
early in life for the sake of seeking a competitive advantage.
This article makes very interesting reading and I think the advice towards the end
of the article, is very wise, ‘If kids are to grow up with a healthy concept of what
digital tools are and how to use them effectively, creatively and kindly, we need
to teach them. This means both guiding them directly and modeling with our own
behavior from the very start.’ The key is having all stakeholders working together
to guide, direct and model. Happy reading.

Attitude of the Week Curiosity
PYP suggests we should encourage students to be curious about the nature of
learning, about the world, its people and cultures:
How?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Ask ‘I wonder’ questions.
Play - we should never be too old to play!
Explore new ideas, new ways of thinking or doing something.
Seek new opportunities.
Know that it's ok to make mistakes - we are being curious!
‘I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.’ Albert Einstein

Parenting Workshop
Homework and Routine
Thank you to all the parents who attended our first workshop.
Homework or Home Learning is the topic of our second workshop.
Just what kind of parental involvement and how much involvement truly helps children
with their homework?
How much time must children spend on homework every day?
How do we introduce a routine into our busy evenings?
These and many such dilemmas are faced by parents of school going children and we
hope this workshop will try to answer some of your questions.
Date: Tuesday November 8th 2016
Time: 3-4 pm
Venue: Primary School Arabic Library
If you would like to attend the workshop, please confirm your place by mail addressed to

Ms. Charma Wilson
Dear Parents,
Ms. Frosoulla Anastisiades
This week and next week we are wrapping up our current Unit Of Inquiry, "Who We Are". We will
be revisiting how our bodies work, the senses, as well as our feelings.
Ms. Vynette Landsberg
If you have any books at home that are about families, then please send them with your child for
show and tell.
Ms. Kamila Complak
Ms. Sally Ahmed
Also, if you have not sent your child's baby pictures (one as a newborn and one as a toddler),
please do as this is as soon as possible, either in an email or hard copy. These pictures contribute
to class discussion and is a wonderful tool for reflection.
Have a lovely week.

Ms. Rebecca Oatley
Ms. Basma Khalaf
Over the next few weeks we will be focusing on the following sounds n, m, d and g. The
children have learnt s, a, t, i, p. We would love it if you could play games with your child
that helps them revise these sounds. Bingo or lotto is a great game for sound revision.
Ms. Tala Al Shawa
Ms. Kathryn Lorenz
Ms. Michelle Ferguson
In writing we are trying to hold our pencil correctly and write letters and numbers in the
correct formation. We have been writing our names and using the sounds we know to
sound out simple words that we can write.
We are continuing to work on recognizing our high frequency words (HFW). Keep
practicing these words at home with your child. Instant recognition of these words will
help when learning to read.
In Mathematics, we are continuing to make patterns and counting objects. We are also
learning to count forwards and backwards. Below are some links to songs that children
love to sing.
Please send in the family trees on the 6th November. If you have completed your family
tree project please go over it with your child so that your child can retell the information
to the class.

Year 1
Ms. Aisha Mahmood
Dear Year One Parents,
Ms. Joannah Powell
This week we will begin our new Unit of Inquiry. The Central Idea is: ‘Foods go through a process
before they reach us’. We will learn about different foods, where they come from, how they reach
us and how they are made/packaged.
Ms. Nobuhle Ngacu
Ms. Rohini Suri
Ms. Komal Patel
The Lines of Inquiry for this unit are:
 Food production
 How foods are transported.
 How different processes have different consequences.
In Mathematics, we have been using non-standard units of measurement to solve real-life
situations. In Language, we have been recognizing familiar signs, labels and logos and identifying
similarities and differences.
General Information:
 House Group T-shirts: Many of the house t-shirts have arrived this week and your child will be
given their t-shirt if they have paid. If you still have not paid for a house t-shirt, please send
25AED to the class teacher so you can purchase one as part of your child’s uniform.
 Year One trip to Spinneys: In relation to our new Unit of Inquiry, Foods go through a process
before they reach us; we are planning to take Year 1 classes on a very short trip to Spinneys at
the Meadows Village. At Spinneys, we will purchase some different food items, looking at cost
and origin. We believe this will be an enjoyable and educational visit. The information letter has
been emailed out to all Year One parents, please could you sign and return the permission slip
to your child’s class teacher no later than Sunday 6th November.
Kind Regards,
Year One Team

Ms. Suzanne Thomas
Ms. Elaine Reeves
Ms. Shereen Khawaja
This week children have been learning all about planet Earth in our Unit of Inquiry lessons.
We have read information books and reports about Earth’s core, atmosphere and moon.
Children have used this information to write fact sheets about planet Earth and have
created their own acrostic poem about Earth. Next week we will research about the other
three rocky, inner planets; Mercury, Venus and Mars. Children will use the internet and
non-fiction books to research and write facts about these planets. This will link to our
Language focus on non-fiction report writing. We will look at different examples of
non-chronological reports and discuss their features before writing our own reports on the
planets we know.
Non-chronological report features (example attached)
 A title
 A short introduction (2 sentences)
 At least 2 sub-headings with a paragraph of information which MUST be related to the
sub-heading
 Diagrams (pictures) and captions
 A conclusion or did you know (interesting fun fact)
 It is is written in the past/present tense
 Written as the thrid person (they NOT I)
In Mathematics we will begin to look at multiplication. Children will learn the ‘x’ multiplication sign and look at how repeated addition is the same as multiplication.
For example: 2+2+2+2+2=10 can be shown as 5 x 2 = 10
5
...please turn to next page
….continued from page 5, Year2
Year 2
Ms. Rebecca Howells
Children will also continue to learn their times table facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Children should be able to count in 2, 5 and 10s and should know the number facts. For
example: 3 x 5 = 15
Year 2 teachers have noticed that the following stationery items in children’s pencil cases
are lacking. A lot of time is wasted each lesson finding pencils for children who do not have
any which distracts the whole class and wastes valuable learning time. Please ensure your
child comes to school with following items;






Several writing pencils
Colouring pencils
Eraser
Glue Sticks
Ruler
Whiteboard makers
Year 3
Ms. Naomi Hunt
Ms. Nelle van Vreden
Ms. Rola Asaf
Ms. Alanna O’Donnell
Ms. Tina Maye
This week, students began their new Unit of Inquiry ‘People use organization as a system
to create order’. We began our week with a classroom activity whereby the students
were given the opportunity to organize themselves once they entered the classroom in
the morning. This is an important entry point as it provides students with an insight into
what happens when there is a lack of organization and management in the classroom and
how it impacts on their learning. This will also be linked to our upcoming teambuilding trip
to Mushrif Park next week whereby students will cooperate as a team to complete tasks.
Students look forward to investigating how a structured routine helps create a successful
system of order in our lives. In Language, we focused on learning about present and past
tense and the importance of note-taking when writing.
Good note-taking has the following features:
·
bullet points
·
key words/phrases
·
not complete sentences
·
no punctuation
·
makes sense
Next week, students will learn how to put notes back into meaningful and informative
sentences. In Mathematics, students have been learning about double digit subtraction
and its connection to addition. We ask that students spend time at home reviewing these
important concepts as they are used throughout the year.
Year 4
Ms. Samantha Hodges
Ma. Laleh Changizi
Ms. Gull Rafiq
Ms. Beryl Folio
Ms. Sumayya Seedat
In Year 4 we are continuing to work on our different multiplication strategies. We are using the
grid and column method for multiplication of 1 and 2 digits.
Don’t forget to use our useful recommended sites:
 Mathsisfun.com
 Matheltics.com
 Funbrain.com
 Ixl.com
 Coolmath4kids.com
 Khan Academy
In Language, we are looking at key features of newspaper and magazine articles. Students have
been cutting our different features and reading various texts. We’ve suggested “Newsomatic” as
app to download. It’s a great newspaper site for kids.

We have also been reading a variety of texts on different explorations and explorers. Students are
beginning to choose who they will base their ICT project on. This will be a brochure showing facts
on a famous explorer. We will be using the programme Publisher to create these.
We will also be writing our own article this week. Our budding journalists will be reporting on
their day of exploration in the Meadows.

No spelling test this week as it’s our scheduled break week. The Year 4 Spelling Bee list will be
sent with my weekly email on Thursday.
Dhows will have a free dress day this Thursday as they are the house champions this month.
We are planning to take the students to Children’s City on November 16th. They have many
galleries and exhibitions related to our Unit of Inquiry. More information will be sent about
this once we have final approval.

We started our Unit, "Human Migration can be a response to challenges, risks and opportunities"
with an experiment today. Following that we looked at 30 picture prompts, all related to
migration. The students expressed their feelings and understanding, discussed and interpreted
the pictures in groups and answered many questions that evoked thinking further. Our students
responded very well to all the inputs and we are excited to explore reasons for migration in the
coming weeks.
Thank you for returning the Field Trip Consent forms. We are still looking for a few more parents
to accompany us on the trip. You could follow our buses, or meet us at the museum at 8.45. If
you are free on Monday or Tuesday and would like your help us with the supervision of a student
group, please contact your child's teacher.
Polygons are our Mathematics focus this week. We are looking at regular and irregular polygons
and learn to express their properties using the correct vocabulary.
The students are enjoying Stories from different Cultures in our Language sessions and are
learning about character, setting, plot, problem, resolution and cultural clues. Listening carefully
and recording events is an important skill we are practicing.
Dhows will have their Free Dress Day on Thursday to celebrate that they won the house point
competition in October. Congratulations.

Year 6 Camp
We were very impressed with the attitudes and behaviour that was modelled by the Year 6
students whilst on camp. They supported each other and participated in activities that
challenged them and took them outside their comfort zones.
They really stood tall and there was a lot of celebrating. A big thank you to Ms. Paisley for
undertaking the huge logistical task of bringing the camp together. The teaching team are sure
it's an experience all will treasure for a very long time.

It has been a productive week in the Arts Department with students preparing presentations for
their assessments. Students are also busy preparing for various upcoming events that will take
place: Meadows Medley Night, Assembly and Meadows Mashups. I’m sure your child will enjoy
explaining how they have been expressing themselves through the Arts during the past week.
Joanne Doherty
Year 3
Students have enjoyed learning about the fable of “The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.” They identified
the moral of the story and the key events of the fable in order to re-enact it effectively. They have
enjoyed learning about the acting technique of expression during performances by taking part in
warm up activities.
Year 4
Students have been preparing for their assessment of “Little Red Riding Hood” by peer assessing.
They did this by pairing up groups, one group would watch the other groups’ performance and
assess it by using the marking rubric and also by recording their performances with i pads. They
were able to self-reflect and reflect on one another’s performances’ by giving honest feedback/
opinion and backing it up by showing the recording. They will now be even more aware of what is
needed for their upcoming assessment.
Year 5
Students have been continuing finalizing their performances by working out what props and
costumes will enhance their performance.
Year 6
Students have been working on improving their performances of “The Seven Ages of Man” speech
by adding more animations and short scenes for the “Justice” part of the speech by re-visiting the
meaning behind the words and looking at how they can interpret it effectively.

YEAR 3
 Year 3 had fun this week singing the ‘Bounce High, Bounce Low’ to reinforce our skills in
solfège. It also helped to develop our sense of pulse by throwing the ball to the pulse of the
music.
 We practiced reading and writing music on the stave using our mini-whiteboards and markers.
 The children enjoyed using their “headphones” when singing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ so that we
could hear our own individual voices.
 Some children then went on to sing solo in front of the class, showing a confident attitude. We
were wowed by the beautiful voices we heard!
YEAR 4
 This week we started our class with the ‘Boom Chicka Boom’ chant. The children had lots of
fun as we experimented with the chant by varying the dynamics, tempo, pitch, and timbre.

We practised reading and writing music on the stave using our mini-whiteboards and markers.
Some students showed a creative attitude by making up and singing their own tunes to m, s
and l while the rest of the class had to record the notes of the tunes on their staves. It became
increasingly challenging when Ms Joanne played tunes on the piano and the students had to
write down the notes.
 We have begun exploring jazz and everybody had fun singing and dancing to the song,
‘Waddaly Atcha’. We learned that a feature of jazz is that you click off the beat, while some
jazz songs contain funny words that don’t really make sense like ‘waddaly atcha’ and ‘doodle
ee doo’. We will continue to explore the origins and features of jazz.
YEAR 5

As part of our Unit Of Inquiry ‘Where We Are In Place and Time’, the children have begun
responding to the works of the famous Hungarian composer, Zoltán Kodály. We listened to
Kodály’s Viennese Musical Clocks from The Story of Háry János and identified the timbre and
structure of the work. It was wonderful to see the curiosity displayed by the children and the
questions asked about the composer and work. Next week we will carry out some research in
groups to follow up on these questions.
YEAR 6

As part of Year 6’s Unit Of Inquiry, ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’ , the children listened
and responded to the two songs ‘Rhythm of Life’ and ‘Circle of Life’. We used Venn diagrams
to record differences and similarities between the two songs in relation to the musical
elements of timbre, structure, pitch, texture, pace, dynamics and duration. The students
began to learn how to sing the songs and were reminded of the importance of warming up
your voice before singing.

EISM REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL - BOYS YR5 & YR6
U10 Boys Football
The U10 boys took on the Regent School for their second game. It was an impressive second
game together, with the goals coming thick and fast! Coming into the first half, Meadows was up
3 goals to 1. Some excellent defense from our back 2 players and our keeper kept a lot of their
shots out of the goal, which allowed our silky midfielders to take the ball up the field. Once the
ball entered the opposition half, our strikers put on some great shots. We finished ahead 6 goals
for and 2 goals against. A fantastic win from a team that is unselfish, but is willing to take the
shot. Well done Meadows.

Meadows took on Regent School for their second game. The U11 boys worked very hard during
the first half to be down 2 goals to 1. Our defenders were working tirelessly against 2 very good
Regent players. The goals kept being saved by our amazing goalkeeper Saul Nairokobe. His effort
in re-launching the attack with big goal kicks allowed Meadows to score a fortuitous goal to level
the match. Our midfield players kept on tackling and only in the last minute of the game did
Regent score a fantastic goal from a very tight angle. A very unlucky loss. The boys should be very
proud of their effort against a talented Regent team.
