The First World War was fought across the globe between 1914 and 1918,
affecting every aspect of people’s lives. This free one day event for year 9 to
year 12 students will explore a variety of aspects of the war, encouraging
pupils to think about the war in a cross-curricular way. The event will
connect with various subjects within the National Curriculum and also offer
opportunities for young people to gain experience of study in Higher
Education.

Programme choices - Choose from the programmes below
(student groups can be split between programmes)
Programme 1
What is a war poem? - Poetry written during and after WWI.
(Writing competition)
The Politics and Legacy of WWI - The politics leading to WWI,
and aftermath/legacy geographically and politically.
Science and the Great War - How war accelerated developments
in science, from ballistics to mustard gas, from medicine to
communications.
Programme 2
Reporting on War Stories - Students will learn about the impact
and influence of war journalism/ propaganda.
The Psychological Aspects of War/Shell Shock/Post Traumatic
Syndrome - Exploration of the devastating effects war had on
soldiers.
The Undead of the Great War - How did the missing bodies of the
Great War come to haunt those left behind.....
Programme 3
Injuries of War and Treatment/Triage - Consideration will be given
to the serious injuries of war and treatments available in triage
1914-1918.
Children of War - In many warring countries, children are recruited
as soldiers. Attendees will write a piece of creative writing from
the point of view of a child soldier.
Art, Propaganda, Images of WWI - The use of images of
propaganda material at home and abroad along with images of
war art.
Programme 4
Influences and importance of Music during WWI - The importance
and influence of music during WWI (Learn a WWI song).
Prison Letters - Exploration of cases of prisoners of conscience
(prisoners who have been incarcerated for their political or
religious beliefs).
Class and gender on the Home Front - How did society change
as a result of the pressures of war, inc. votes for women?
