Density and Buoyancy
Density
• The amount of mass an object has
per volume of space.
• The equation for density is:
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
Buoyancy
• Whether an object floats or sinks in a
fluid.
• In science, a fluid is anything that
flows (gases and liquids).
Density = 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒
There are two ways objects vary in
density:
• Positive buoyancy (floats)
Object density < fluid density
1. More atoms in the same volume
• Negative buoyancy (sinks)
Object density > fluid density
2. More mass in each atom
• Neutral buoyancy (same)
Object density = fluid density
