acappellaensemble,announced32-yearoldcomposerCharlesPerryman
(CWPerryman.com)asthewinnerofits2016YoungComposersCompetition.The
CapitalHearingswillpremierethepieceatitssixthannualfallconcert,Revolutions
&Revelations:TheMusicofPoliticalChange,onSaturday,Sept.24atFirst
CongregationalUCCinWashington,D.C.
Perrymandrewlanguagefromsomeofhistory’sdarkesterastocreate
“Demagogue,”selectingspeechesandtextsfromAncientGreece,post-revolutionary
France,1930sGermany,andMcCarthy-eraUnitedStates.Thesearewoventogether
andlayereduponeachotherincomplex,pulsatingrhythms.Atseveralpoints,the
compositioninstructssingerstoactivelyignoretempomarkings—andeachother—
toemphasizethemayhemanddisconnectedness.
“’Demagogue’isnotasmuchareactiontorecentpoliticaleventsasitisadepiction
ofacyclethatoccursoverandoveragaininademocracy,”saysPerryman.“Byusing
historicaldocuments,governmentslogans,andpoliticalspeech,myworkstandsasa
warningaboutwhathappenstoafreesocietywhenitistakeninbyapoliticianwho
manipulatespeople'sfearstogainpower.”
OriginallyfromnorthernVirginia,Perryman,anaccomplishedcomposer,arranger,
andpianist,nowlivesinArlington,Virginia.HeteachesmusictheoryatWest
VirginiaUniversity,wherehereceivedhisD.M.A.inComposition.Thecompetitionis
opentocomposers40yearsoldandyoungerfromtheU.S.andCanada.
