AT Solutions: Writing Composition Assistive Technology Training Online University at Buffalo - The State University of New York USDE# H324M980014 http://atto.buffalo.edu AT Solution: Word Cards + Sentence Strips Word Cards: Students can manipulate groups of word cards arranged in sentence order to create sentences; or “read” the sentence all by themselves! Pictures help students to focus on the task of expressing ideas in a written form, while strengthening word/picture associations. This activity combines several learning modalities. The words can come from the Word Wall and combined with basic phrases, verbs, articles and punctuation. Read the following sentence out loud with the child. Making & Using Word Cards Use different sized index cards with text, photos, magazine pictures or drawings. Including a text label on any picture will help the student to relate the written word to the picture. Use word phrases if this makes writing easier o Use a graphic software program such as Boardmaker to create the word cards. Select a grid with buttons that are at least 2 X 2 inches, or make your own buttons of any size. Print out on heavy cover paper, cut and use. o Create a Word Card Table in MS Word to create your own cards with either words or graphics from the Internet. AT Solutions: Writing Composition Sentence Strips Consider using a sentence strip to place the word cards on. This helps the student understand how words are grouped on a line to form a sentence that can then be read left to right. A sentence strip has a word and a picture of what that word represents. For younger children use words with real objects that match the words. § Add more cards to provide more card choices for the student to create more sentences. Try selecting 1-2 phrases that can be used with several object words.
