Research Interests
A China historian with a primary research focus on the Ming period (1366-1644), I have
published extensively on the political, military, and social aspects of the penultimate
imperial dynasty. My teaching sojourn in Hong Kong as a teacher educator stimulated
a second research interest in the history of teacher education in the former British
colony, and I have published three edited books and more than a dozen journal articles
in this area. My current project is on the social world of Mao Xiang (1611-93), an
intriguing man of letters from East China.
Teaching
My teaching career has taken me from Nanjing (1987-89) to Hong Kong (1995-2005) and
finally to London. Since joining Huron in 2005, I have taught eight courses on the
history of China, East Asia, and the (non-Western) world. Four of them, namely "Law
and Punishment in Imperial China", "Political Assassination", "War and Memory in
Modern East Asia", and "Sex, Law, and Society in Imperial China", were designed by
me and have been well received by the students.
